• Lachlan’s First Legal Barra 🤙

    23 Mei 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Lachlan was keen to catch his first legal Barra and with 6 cherabin we headed to spot X. We arrived on the top of the tide and the fishing was hot. Lachie reeled in a 48cm on his first cast which gave him some curry on the light rod. Next cast out didn’t even hit the bottom and he was on again. I stepped back and watched the boys do everything. As Lachie muscled it in, it lept from the water and continued to fight hard. With the fish now closer to the boat and Brax on the net they both landed it and instantly Lachie knew it was his first keeper, he was so exited, he just kept saying “Yes! Yes, Yes”.
With the fish on the floor Lachie went straight to work, open bale, grips in, hook out, and cut the mouth in preparation for a photo. It measured 58cm and he wanted to keep it, he loves Barra so it was Barra for tea, however I was not so keen on having to fillet it.
When we arrived home, plenty more pictures were taken and we hit the cleaning tables. Lachie was very keen to learn to fillet, I was very apprehensive and nervous because we were 3 hours from the nearest hospital. I demonstrated a little bit then he was in there and basically filleted the whole fish, he even cut the wings out which were his favourite, and mine too.
We had a fire cook up that night and added Brax’s 80cm wings plus morrocan and butter, it was delicious. What a great end to a great day!
