  • Osprey Bay - Fish overload

    14 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

    Part 2 - The Fishing photos 🎣

Another late night of fish filleting and vacuum sealing. Brett and Shaun have their routine down to a fine art now.

There is not a inch of room left in any of the freezes for any more fish. We were already eating fish every second night for dinner, I think we are going to have to up the anti and have it every night 😂. Time to google some more fish recipes.Meer informatie

  • Opsrey Bay - The Ningaloo

    15 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we headed to the outer reef of Osprey Bay to explore. It was spectacular, the coral was like an underwater garden. There was so many different colours, it is just so beautiful, you can loose time out there.

After our snorkel we headed in and set up on a private little beach where we spent the day lazing in the sun. Our little snorkel babies just can’t get enough of it and are in the water most of the day gazing at turtles or Lyla’s favourite the sea cucumber 😂😂.

We all made sure we made the most of hanging with the turtles today as our time at Osprey is coming to an end 😕. Even Lyla got up close and personal with the turtles today 🤗.

  • Oyster Stacks - The Ningaloo

    16 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Yes, we finally got to snorkel Oyster Stacks! You can only snorkel here on a high tide that is above 1.2m. We waited all week and on our last day at Ospray Bay the high tide hit a 1.3m 🤗🤗🤗. We all got prepared the night before as high tide was at 8.30 in the morning and we didn’t want to miss it, and boy was it worth it, this was our best snorkel yet. Brett and I think this is our favourite snorkel spot so far.

There was 4 rock formations in the middle where the location gets its name ‘ The Oyster Stacks’ they were amazing to look at, they made for magical castles under the water and little windows you could look through that were full of fish. The fish here were happy to interact with you, some of them even nibbled on your fingers and the go pro 😂.

I think the best here was the huge octopus we found, watching him change colours and camouflage in with the different rocks and coral as he moved was mesmerising. I could have stayed in the water all day.

  • Exmouth - Brax’s Birthday

    19 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today we celebrated Braxies 10th birthday.

Yesterday he planned out everything he wanted to do, including visiting the information centre and getting a list of eateries in town. He then came back to the caravan and looked up the ones he was interested in, read the reviews and looked at the pictures of the food ☺️. He ended up choosing the Whalebone Brewery, and what a great choice, they were the best pizzas I have ever had.

In true Brax style he was up bright and early as he was so excited he could not sleep, at 5.30am I felt him slip into our bed and cuddle me awake 🥰.

After presents and some special phone calls we made his favourite blueberry, strawberry and white chocolate chip pancakes.

He then spent the day at the caravan park putting his new lego kit together, playing ping pong, swimming in the pool and having a pinjata.

He had a party at lunch time with lots of lollies, party pies, sausage rolls, frankfurters and hot chips.

He spent the afternoon cruising around the park on a go cart and then we headed out to dinner at the WhaleBone Brewery.

To finish off the night we had Braxies favourite, French vanilla cheese cake.

He had a great day and was extremely tired at the end of the day.

  • Exmouth - Turtle nesting

    21 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Went and watched these beautiful mumma turtles lay their eggs.

There is so many turtles coming up to lay at the moment, we saw around 10 in the 4 hours we were there. When we walked up into the dunes you could see turtle nests everywhere.

It is a very long process and unfortunately our presence on the beach was enough to spoke some of the turtles straight back into the water.

  • 14 Mile - Back to the Squid Grounds

    23 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Well the squid are still here! The boys got the boat straight off and hit up their squid ground. They brought back an esky full of squid and fed everyone camped on the beach ( there was only 2 other caravans besides us, but they were stocked).
Not only did they other campers on the beach get a feed of squid but they also got a squid cleaning lesson.

Shaun has been googling squid recipes and decided he was going to prepare Chinese squid for dinner. He had pre bought all the ingredients in town. It may of taken him 3 hours to prepare and cook, but it was well worth the wait, even though I am sick I still ate it and it was to die for. Unfortunately, no one took any photos, so he will have to cook it again 😝.

  • 14 Mile - Kid’s squid session

    24 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Brax woke up looked outside and said “ it’s prefect for a squid”. So that’s what Brett and the kids did this morning.

They came back with a full esky again ( lucky neighbours) and Brett caught the biggest squid we have ever seen! We used our Byron measure to measure it.Meer informatie

  • 14 Mile - yes, beach front

    24 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We were more prepared this time and booked ahead and got the primo beach front sites. We are loving life. Although, we probably didn’t have to book ahead as the camp ground is near empty 😂😂. Apparently it is the off season they call it ‘blowvember’ but we have been scoring the best weather, so luck is on our side.Meer informatie

  • 14 Mile - Skurfing days

    26 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

One way to try and stay away from the flies is to stay in the water (sort of).

Boys have been loving getting out behind the boat, but these stinking hot days have made the flies savage, the worst we have had yet.

Even Lyla had a go skurfing!

  • 14 Mile - Kid’s fishing trip

    27 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

The kids are going to try their luck going out beyond the reef. Brax is usually very worried about this but the winds are good today and he has been loving his fishing lately.

Meanwhile, I am in recovery mode, laying low in the van trying to stay out of the heat!

Unfortunately, the sharks were out today, even though the kids had a great time fishing and caught lots of fish, they kept getting eaten by sharks before they could get them in the boat 😕.

Lachlan has been renamed the Cod King as he was pulling up cod after cod.

The fishing went on into the night, as it has every night here. Tonight it was Brax’s turn to pull in a big one!

    28 november 2021, Australië ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

They just can’t help themselves. Every arvo they pop out for a quick squid!

Last night they needed ‘bait’ and then supplied the backpackers with dinner.

This morning they needed some more bait and then feed another 2 couples who are staying on the beach.

Then tonight they needed more bait! They plan on doing lots of fishing at Gnaraloo and they also got some squid for the freezer.

Well I know why they call it Coral Bay! The coral out here is next level. We booked an extra night at 14 Mile and spent the day at Bill’s Bay, I was finally feeling well enough to head out.

Kat hired a kayak and Brett and Shaun paddled me out to the Ayers Rock Bommie which I had been dying to see.Meer informatie

  • Carnarvon Space Station

    30 november 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

  • Back at Gnaraloo

    1 december 2021, Australië ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

And we are back at Gnaraloo for some surfing, snorkelling and fishing. Let’s hope the weather plays nice.

  • Fairwell 2nd Family

    7 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

It was a sad morning when we had to say our goodbyes for a 2nd time to Kat, Shaun, Lyla and Byron. Hopefully it’s not for to long this time, as we have plans to meet up in SA in Feb. Hopefully we can get by without each other for that long.

Kat and I got our last snorkel in together yesterday and made sure we found ourselves some turtles, as we were having turtle withdrawals. Unfortunately these turtles were not as friendly, but we still got some nice pictures and got to swim with them for a while.

  • Gnaraloo Bay - Mack Attack and Squid

    8 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    Macky Assault

While the wind howled we watched Battle Fish on Netflix. Battle Fish is a show about professionals trolling for Albacore Tuna and using lines to pull them in. Words like “bust up”, “boilers” and “birdnado” were mixed in with using the time for direction. These were practiced while the kids and I planned an early morning Mack Attack.

We woke at 4:30 am to reasonable winds, so we hightailed it to Gnaraloo Bay where the boat was waiting. Gnaraloo Bay is very remote, with predominately rough seas this time of year and no one in sight or for miles, if things take a turn for the worst you are on your own in shark infested waters. Nerves will be tested out here!
We were all pumped to get a big Macky, but after half-an-hour of trolling through choppy conditions and getting wet, I could see the excitement wearing off the kids faces. The realisation of the danger was sinking in, but then the rod started dancing and the reel was singing, we were on a tuna and the excitement returned.

Not long after we struck gold, a 1.1m Spanish Mackerel. It fought hard dragging the small tinny around the ocean for a couple of minutes. Brax sunk the gaff and we lifted it into the boat, just as three large whaler sharks arrived on the scene, they were exited too.

To say we were exited was an understatement. We fished a little longer then headed back in very proud of ourselves, not only for achieving our goal, but for taking on the the very remote Wild West Australian Ocean in a 3.7m tinny.

Fillets were vacuumed sealed and put in the esky, then we headed out for a more relaxing squid in the bay. They are fun, 4 big dogs later we returned and washed up. The boys are getting so helpful cleaning squid and washing the boat. A few cold drinks 🍺 and a swim in paradise before heading back for a Spanish Mackerel cook up at our ocean front home.

Life is good! What a Day!

  • Gnaraloo Bay - Massive Tuna

    10 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

So glad we bought a gaff before this leg of the journey cause the boat may be small but it doesn’t stop us reeling in the big fish!
Day two out with the groms chasing big sea monsters, another early start and we were rewarded. 10 minutes in and it was fish on, I handed Brax the rod and he reeled a 1200mm Spanish Mackerel to the boat for Lachie to gaff. After another smaller Mackerel was released, the wind was picking up but we decided to continue trolling. We started to idle with the qantas lure barely 10 foot behind the boat and before I could throw the second lure it got smashed by a 1150mm Northern Bluefin Tuna. It felt like we were on a Battle Fish Episode, it peeled over 100 foot of line before I could turn it and bring it back to the boat. Knowing how heavy this fish was I swapped Brax for the gaff and he struggled to hold it at the surface, it was twice as heavy as the same length Mackerel. Once it was in the boat we were so exited (as seen in the video) and Lachlan cried out “I am not done yet” which is a classic line from the TNT crew on Battle Fish when they don’t give up and it pays off with a big catch.
We were stoked, bluefin tuna salad with rice and chutney is our favourite lunch. That night we enjoyed a pickled squid entree, fried mackerel coated in oyster sauce and panko crumb, fried tuna coated in salt pepper and olive oil, and my favourite bluefin sashimi, raw bluefin almost frozen then sliced thinly and soaked in light soy sauce then topped with pickled ginger and wasabi…… yum yum yum 😋
All this was enjoyed with some friends of Sam and Rani’s, Alex and Bec who we met that day and were champions and great company.
Gnaraloo has it all…… Surf Snorkelling Seafood 🤗
    I love this place 😍

  • Brett’s Adventures - Manta Ray Swim

    15 december 2021, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Brett said “I am not paying $600 for a Manta Ray tour, I will put my boat in and find them myself”. Here we go I thought secretly wishing we would just pay for the tour.

We got up at 5am, it was windy but still ok, we headed down the beach and worked out the best place to launch the boat. After a lot of procrastination and uming and aring ( about if we should go out) we were in the water by 9.

I could not believe it when straight away Brett yells and points at two massive mantra rays right next to the boat. I started to grab my snorkel gear, but Brett let them get away. I was pissed. That felt like the end, we couldn’t manage to find any more.

The tour boats started to come in with their fancy manta ray finding planes, so we moved out of the way. We sat patiently in the bay and stalked the tour boats seeing where they dropped snorkels to swim with rays. We were surprised when they sat in the one spot the whole time. As soon as they left we raced over to the channel where the tour boats had been and jumped in. Straight away of course Brett sees a shark 😮, it was just a reef shark. Then right beneath us a mantra ray 🤗🤗🤗🤗, I yell to Lachlan who was in the boat waiting and he jumps in. Then 2 more rays swim on over. It was truly amazing.

Brax was a bit tedious about getting in, he has been fishing with Brett a lot and was worried about sharks, but he decided to get in and with some reassurance from Brett he swam with the rays too.

We jumped back in the boat and drove back up for another drop and swim with the rays again. After that Brett was saying he had enough but Lachlan and I were keen for another swim as why wouldn’t you be, so we decided to head back up for one last drop.

We jumped in and Brett looks at us and says back in the boat big shark! Well Lachlan and I were back in quick sticks, I have never been able to get back in the boat myself, but this time I managed 😂😂. As I look over to check on Brett he is yelling for the Go Pro, and then I saw ray after ray was swimming past under the boat! 9 of them. The shark was forgotten, in we got. The rays were swimming in a chain then formed a circle and were swimming around and around. It was mesmerising. It was like they were dancing they were going upside down and around in circles at one point I was right in the middle, their wings were touching me I was so close.

We were all on such a high when we got back, it was better than we could have ever imagined. Seeing these large majestic creatures gliding through the water and being able to experience it in our own time and not rush was truely magical.

Lachlan the fish, you couldn’t hold him back from getting in, and Brax we were so proud of you for getting in the water not once, but three times with these beautiful rays (especially, because he the one always telling us different facts about these amazing creatures).

Another successful Brett’s Adventure. It was a big day but well worth it.
