  • Top Didj Cultural Experience

    15. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

What a valuable experience. Today we meet Manuel, an Aboriginal Elder who was born and lived in the bush around Katherine until he was in his early 20s ( he thinks as he does not know when his birthday is or he exact age). His tribe originated in Central Arnhem Land, he is able to speak 3 different Aboriginal languages and now English.

Manuel started off by playing the digareedoo for us, then he told us many stories about his childhood and growing up in the bush. Brett and I found the stories fascinating and very insightful into the Aboriginal culture.

    Manuel spoke about:

    - Artefacts they used in day to day life and compared them with what we use now. For instance, cups, plates, bowls, baby carriers we made from paperbark. They often only lasted a week or two, then they were burnt or thrown in the bush to decompose. Today, we have cups that last until we want a new one, or we break it.

    - remembering how he always felt hungry and cried a lot when he was younger, often going to bed hungry. In between wet and dry season there are lots of fruits and berries, but in the dry season there is only meat available, if you can find it.

    - the sharing ways of their culture. That when they hunt or gather the food for the day they would take what they found back and share with the whole family. He explained how this is still happening within the culture today and also with their money. There pay goes in, they take the whole lot out and share it amongst the family, therefor their money is gone in one day.

    - being cold and uncomfortable when he slept, often have broken nights sleep due to being woken by bugs and insects crawling on him or having to relight the fire to stay warm.

    - how they gathered enough food for that day, they would cook, prepare and eat the food often having none left. Then they would repeat this process the next day.

    - the lack of concept of time, they spent the day as needed, hunting, washing, cooking ect. They did not have three meals a day, often only one or they ate when hungry. He told how each process for hunting and gathering was very lengthy and the whole time you would be hungry, but would have to wait and share the goods.

    - he was happy and content living in the bush, but when his parent passed he decided to come live in the settlement ( town). He had to learn a new language, routines, eating habits, how to manage his money. He now lives in a 2 bedroom flat, which is very comfortable and has all the furnishings. He now wakes up happy and well rested each day as he has a comfy bed and aircon for when it is hot. Not like when he use to have a log as a pillow.

    So many interesting tales.

We then got to have a art lesson using tradition painting techniques. We each choose a picture to paint, and then using reeds from the billabong which had been stripped down to a fine point we painted using a range of different types of lines. The main section of the art was created using diagonal lines and three different colours of ochre.

Manuel then taught us how to light a fire using sticks, sand and dried grass. We all got to have a turn at rubbing the sticks together in a fast motion to try and create friction in the sand. Once the sand started smoking, he tipped the hot coals into the dried grass, creating fire.

The final activity, the one the kids had been hanging for was spear throwing at a giant red kangaroo. We got a lesson on using the spear and Woomera. Brett and Lachie both got the spear into the kangaroo, Brax knocked his out cold and I completely missed 😂.

Great fun and learning was had by all. Brax even said it was one of the best things he had done on this trip.

  • Why Not, Bitter Springs Again 🤗

    16. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

There is no better way to start the trip to Queensland then stopping at Bitter Springs again for a refreshing dip.

We got there early, and only had to share the springs with a few people. There was steam coming off the water because it was only 6 degrees when we arrived 🥶. We ran down and jumped in to get warm. As there was not many people, the water was extra clear.

After a few hours floating around we were quite print and hungry, so back to the van for bacon and eggs before starting our drive to the border.

  • Hello Queensland

    18. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

What a great start to Queensland, I picked a ripper of a free camp on a billabong and as we drove in there was three brolgas.

As we were doing schoolwork, I saw the brolgas out the window, school work was abandoned to feed the brolgas and take photos. While feeding the brolgas whistling kite hawks came to the party and we started to feed them too, what fun 🤩Lue lisää

  • Mary Kathleen Abandoned Mining Town

    19. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

    What an interesting camp!

Mary Kathleen, was a uranium mining town from 1954 to 1982.

The ore was mined by the open-cut method and processed on site. The township ( where we camped) was six km away, and once had a post office, pub, cinema, sports ovals, a school, banks and a community store.

All of buildings have been removed, some were relocated to Mt Isa and are still in use today. You can still see the tennis courts, roads, round a-bouts and concrete slabs where all the temporary houses where placed.

We drove out to the open cut mine. We were able to walk around the rim of one of the sections of the mine, the colours on the wall were amazing and the kids were fascinated learning about uranium and what it was/is used for.

Then, it was back to the van for a movie marathon. Brett and I are both sick and can not shake it. We feel like utter crap. So it was a movie afternoon for all!

The next day we were feeling somewhat better ( not really), but we had promised the kids a handball challenge, so it was on! I made great use of the dunks square 😂.

You can’t camp at a mine and not go for a fossick! We checked out the pink rock mine and got ourselves some pink rock and some lovely peacock ore samples.

  • Normanton

    22. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Normanton, home of the Big Barra and a Big Croc Krys.

A great stop for the day, with an awesome playground and water splash park to entertain the kids.

The Big Croc was a replica of a crocodile that was killed in the Norman River in 1957, it measured a whopping 8.7m and its estimated weight was over 2t. It was the largest saltwater croc ever captured and made it into the Guinness World Records.Lue lisää

  • Agate Creek

    22. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

    Four days of fossicking heaven.

I told Brett I wanted to check out Agate Creek, he said “yea sure, we can do that!”. I left out the part where we had to drive nearly 100km of dirt to get there 😮😬🤗. But after he found out, he was still keen. A few hours later we made it there, with Brett saying “after that massive drive we are staying here at least 3 nights!” Well that suited me.

The camp ground was empty, we pulled up right next to the dry river and set up camp, I had a quick look and was excited to be on the river, I could spend all day wondering up and down looking for agates🤗.

We ventured out and checked out a few spots deciding where we would head in the morning for our first fossick.

We were after some large thunder eggs, but these were seeming a bit hard to get, and there was holes everywhere, no-where to start fresh. We decided to go and find some smaller pieces. The kids ( and Brett and I ) were having so much fun, the smaller agate eggs were easy to dig out and we were seaming to find plenty.

After 3 days of digging, we had a pretty big bucket full, it was time to wash and cut some open. We found some beautiful pieces, some with the lines of colour and some with crystal caves.

We are heading home, with a bucket of agate in tow, I can not wait to purchase myself a tumbler and polish these babies up.

  • O’Briens Creek Fossicking Fail

    28. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Our fossicking adventures were not so successful today 😞, only 2 pieces of topaz were found.

The kids were not much help today, giving up early and sitting in the car.

The cloudy, windy day provided a nice temp to fossick in and an added bonus was all the trees providing shade.

Don’t worry I have not been deterred, the failure has only made me more determined. I have already planned out next fossicking adventure, much to the kids disgust.

2 days worth of soaking in hot pools and playing tennis 🎾.

So busy swimming, no photos were taken! Whoops.

Braxy even cooked us dinner, soup and toast for our date night. Brett and I enjoyed champagne and then we all went for a night swim, the kids swam in the 34 degree outside pool while Brett and I had a inside hot spa of 38 degrees. Bliss.Lue lisää

  • Fossicking Win! Yes 🤗

    30. elokuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We ventured out again today in search of Topaz. This time we were heading out to a private property in Innox with a public fossicking area.

After sieving the creek for a while we moved on, up a very rocky and washed out 4WD track and found the goods.

We noticed a lot of evidence of pieces of topaz laying on the ground. We collected some small pieces and then begun to dig and sieve. We found a few nice, bigger pieces. It was getting late and I was not ready to stop, so we loaded up 3 buckets of dirt to take back and sieve through back at camp.

  • Archer River Free Camp

    3. syyskuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

What a ripper of a spot, right on the river. We planned on pulling in for a quick over nighter and we ended up staying for 5 😂.

As we had such good luck fossicking we ducked back out for another go, finding another handful of good sized Topaz.

After a huge day of sieving, we were filthy, so we dropped in for a hot bath at Innox Hot Spring River. I have never felt so relaxed and clean.

We swam in the river rapids, at the camp, it was a bit chilly so we chucked our wetties on. Everyone had boards to protect them, I on the other hand have a huge bruise on my butt where I hit the biggest rock in the river.

We visited Millstream Falls, the largest curtain water fall in Australia. We went prepared for a swim, then we discovered it is just a look out 🙃. Still it was very impressive.

And we spent time relaxing, doing school work, reading, playing IPads and watching movies. It was a great week, it was very hard to leave.

We got up, got school work done and got ready to see and swim at Millaa Millaa Falls. The most photographed waterfall in Australia.

As we drove, the clouds came in and the temp kept dropping, by the time we arrived it was starting to sprinkle and was 15 degrees.

Oh well no swimming for us, but it made for some great photos, as there was hardly anyone there and no-one swimming.

Nope it was time for TRACTOR DRIVING!!!!! The kids were over the moon with excitement, Lachlan had wanted to drive the tractor since we got here. The boys could not wipe the smiles off their faces.
