    Rottnest Island

After a week of driving we have finally stopped and we are settled in at Mandurah. a few day trips on the cards, first up Rottnest Island.

After missing out on this adventure in 2021 due to a Covid lockdown, we were all super keen to check it out.

This time Mel, Joel and Taj got to come with us. As we started on the ferry over Brett said “ I don’t know why we paid $155 for this, we could have brought the tinny over”! I told him that would be one Brett’s adventure he would have done on his own. I bet he was glad he decided on the paid ferry across, as on the way home it was so rough people on the top deck were getting wet by the waves 😂😂. I don’t think our little tinny would have made it. I was even starting to feel a bit under the weather with all the rocking.

When we arrived, I was super keen to find a quokka, it didn’t take long, we got off the ferry and headed for the bakery and on the way under a tree was a family of quokkas 🤗🤗🤗. I couldn’t believe our luck, there wasn’t even anyone one trying to get photos, so we sat down and got photos. It says no patting, but they were too hard to resist. We even saw the last remaining peacock on the island.

We decided against getting bikes and got the hop-on-hop off bus instead, and boy were we glad when we saw the hills and the puffed out people trying to ride up them.

We enjoyed relaxing and snorkelling at three beautiful beaches, breakfast and lunch on the island and then we treated ourselves to some beers and cocktails at the top bar before we left. We also squished in few more photo sessions with quokkas along the way. The last quokka in the park was my favourite, she had a baby in her pouch and was more than happy to smile and pose for the camera.

  • Rottnest Island

The fun continues, as the boys get into some jetty jumping on Rottnest Island. Then we headed to the bar for a relaxing drink.

What a great day! What a great start to 2022!

  • Estuary Hideaway - Mandurah

A busy week at Mandurah, crabbing, pedicures, day trips, installing hot water systems, installing car stereos, shopping, possum feeding, thrombolites, winery and on our last night Mandurah Grey Hound Races. So many late nights this week.

I think we need a holiday from our holiday, we are all exhausted 🥱.

  • Exploring Perth

Another big day, up at 4.30am to explore the big smoke.

Another activity we missed out on last time we were in Perth, due to the covid lock down, the Perth Explore Double Decker Bus.

What a great way to see the city, even if it is a tad scary. We wanted to make sure we got the top deck, so we got into the city early, had a delicious breakfast and got to the bus stop in plenty of time to find out we were the only ones on the bus 😂😂.

After a tour of the city it was time for lunch, Brax had been bugging us for sushi, so sushi it was. Everyone was super excited when we found a sushi train! What an experience, everyone stuffed themselves.

After lunch we headed to the Perth Mint for a tour. We even got to watch first hand, molten gold be poured into a gold bar.

We had public transport passes for the day so we decided to jump on a ferry for an evening ride. Mel and I had been wanting to see the Water Maze Fountain, so we looked them up and made our way there, unfortunately they get turned off at 5pm ☹️, and we didn’t know so we missed out! Brett and Joel thought it was funny to film our disappointed faces when we arrived and realised what had happened!

After numerous walks, runs, buses, trains and ferry rides, it was time to head back to the van, we got back at 9.30pm making for a very long day, but it was worth it. It was actually very quite in town and everything was very accessible making the day very easy and enjoyable.

  • Margaret River

What a jam packed day, shopping for new wetsuits for the kids, skate park to get out some energy, 2 wineries, Guinea Pig cuddles and sheep feeding.

I was excited to go back to Mad Fish Winery to get some of my favourite Prosecco, but they were out of stock! To say I was devastated was an understatement, I think the lady could tell I was disappointed when I refused to taste any more wines in the tasting 🤣! Then onto Stella Bella, one we missed out on going to last time we were here. But after the disappointment of not getting my Prosecco, I just wasn’t in the mood for moscato, but I grabbed a bottle because it is one of my favourites.

  • Hamelin Bay

The sun finally came out, so we took Aunty Mel, Uncle Joel and Taj to see the Black Sting Rays of Hamelin Bay.

We were a bit worried when we first got there as we couldn’t see any, but it didn’t take long before the jiggling of the pilchards we brought got their attention. There was three massive black sting rays and three or four eagle rays that came in to see us. They were so big they were pushing the kids over.

Last time we were here, Brax was very intimidated by their size and was scared to feed and touch them, but this time no encouragement was needed he was the first one in the water with a pilchard. All the kids (and grown ups) had a great time feeding them.

Then it was back to camp to jump on the golf buggies and head out to sheep feeding and cuddle some more Guinea pigs. Lachlan is never going to want to leave Big Valley Camp Ground!

  • Last day with Aunty Melly

Today was our last day with Aunty Mel, Uncle Joel and Taj. It was a bit sad, as we have gotten to spend a lot of time with them while we have been in WA, but this was goodbye for a while 😢.

We made the most of the day, heading to Injidup Natural Spa first and it was so much fun ( sorry Kat). It had the perfect amount of spa going on.

Then it was off to Canal Bridge and The Aquarium for a snorkel. It was nice to get in the water, there was a few fish but the snorkelling was nothing amazing.

We stopped in at one last winery, Swings and Roundabouts a for a beer, while the kids had a play before heading back for pizza night at the camp ground. We couldn’t pass up one last wood-fired bread, dukka and bubbles before dinner!

  • Margaret River

Well we sure know how to spend up big $$$, the kids did well in Margs! A new wetsuit each and a new surf board 🏄‍♂️.

They desperately needed new wetsuits, poor Brax was still squeezing into a size 6😬, although now I may be regretting the decision as they don’t get cold and are spending hours in the water.

We spent the week relaxing and exploring the beaches. Brett was loving getting a surf each morning, then coming back to get us, so we would hang at the beach for the day. In the arvos we would relax while the kids had a skate at the skate park or we picked up dinner and went to the local park. It was way to hot to go back to caravan before 5pm (fire ban so no generator before 5pm). Then it was time for family movie night 🤗.

  • Night off

When the kids and Brett cook, yummo.

I got the night off from cooking and was spoilt with this delicious dish.

Oyster sauce and panko crumbed Mackie on a Thai salad.

  • Australia Day - Esperance

Esperance put on a great Australia Day. All of the activities were FREE! The kids had a ball, going on blow up obstacle courses, mechanical bulls and laser tag whilst in between eating delicious donuts and metre long lollies😋.

Brett and I wandered the markets, but mostly ate chips on sticks, roti breads and donuts while the kids played 😂😂. We may have visited the donut stand twice, they were so good.

  • Australia Day - Twilight Beach

After a busy day celebrating Australia Day in town, it was time to cool off and have a surf.

We headed to Twilight Beach, even though the sun was not out, the water was stunning, crystal clear and amazingly blue.

I even put on my wet suit and had a play with the dome, which we got for the go pro.

  • Cape Le Grand - Frenchmans Peak

Frenchman’s Peak is a 3km return hike to the summit of a rock mountain. The first part of the walk was along a path surrounded by beautiful wild flowers. Then it turned to a vertical climb to the summit.

It was worth the leg burn, there were so many beautiful spots to explore once you reached the top.

On the very tip top of the summit, we had to be sure to hold onto our hats, as the wind was strong.

The kids thought the climb down was harder than the climb up, making sure they went slow and didn’t slip.

  • Cape Le Grand - Lucky Bay

An early, cloudy start to the day at Lucky Bay ( with no kangaroos in sight). After having an explore and some breakfast, we thought we would head of and climb Frenchmans Peak and see if this nasty cloud would clear up!

Luckily for us it did, we got a beautiful slightly windy but sunny day to explore the beaches of Cape Le Grand.

After checking out, Hell Fire Bay and Thistle Cove we ended up back at Lucky Bay, as we could drive the car down and have all our things easily assessable. Although the others were nicer and had less people on them, laziness won.

We spent the rest of the day swimming, surfing, playing car boats and then after a late lunch early dinner we headed home for a movie.

  • Observatory Beach - Esperance

Last day in Esperance today, so we had to make the most of it. First things first, we had to get some washing done, it had been neglected for quite some time!

While we waited for the washing, the boys had one last go on the skate park. They are really starting to get confident and have really developed their skills over the last few weeks. It’s been great being around skate parks again.

The boys worked up a sweat so it was off to the beach for one last swim in that crystal clear, turquoise water 😍. We went to Observatory Beach, so Brett could have a surf, this immediately put Lachlan off side and he had the poos as he was wanting to go to Twilight Beach again. He came around after we found some stunning rock pools that the boys could do silly salmon into and then float down, as they had a currant. After Lachlan’s mood improved, we went back up the beach, the kids body surfed while Brett caught some more waves.

Dominoes pizza on the way back home, a quick pack up and then we were on our way to the Nullarbor.

What a way to spend our last day in Esperance, so glad we got a few days with the sun out 🤗.

  • Leaving WA 😢

$600, 1500kms, 3 days and a few tears later, we left WA and are back in SA.

It was surreal driving along the Nullarbor, with the border into WA being closed, it was just us and the truckies on the road. The roadhouses were like ghost towns, a very different experience to our trip into WA last year.

  • Perlubie Beach SA - Reunited

Back to where it felt like it all begun, our first Beach camp on our big lap.

It didn’t disappoint second time around, beautiful, warm, crystal clear water, that we laid in for hours, long days with the sun not setting until after 9pm each night.

It had been a few months since we had seen Kat, Shaun, Lyla and Byron and we were all excited to meet them, this time they had Lyn and Gary in tow.

The boys kept a close eye on the Penguins map and when they saw they had entered the car park, they ran the entire beach to meet them.

It did not take Brett and Shaun long to get the boat down, they were keen on getting some fishing done. The boys cleaned up, even if it took a few days for them to warm up to catching these smaller size fish.

We had whiting, crab, squid and razor fish cook ups for tea almost every night, you can’t bet that!

Unfortunately, after 8 nights it was time to say our goodbyes again. This time we know for sure, the original traveling team will not be reunited until we return home at Christmas 😢.

  • Perlubie Beach - Island Days

Days like this are meant for relaxing on islands.

The kids were feeling a bit down after Lyla and Bryon left yesterday, but their spirits were lifted when Jack, Mac and Frankie came back to camp with us for the weekend.

We all dropped our boats in and hit up the island for razor clams. Unfortunately, Jack cut his foot and his island trip was cut short.

We however, hit up the island for a swim, to collect some shells and explore the ruins.

Perlubie, the place for making mates!

The kids had a ball with an awesome bunch of kids and we had just as much fun with their parents.

I love when we can find some kids a similar age to the boys, they have so much fun, swimming, playing in the dunes, chatting, spotlighting , playing hide and seek and roasting marshmallows.

We have plans to meet them in the next week or so, so hopefully it all works out.

  • Speeds Point

A rainy day at Speeds Point did not deter us! When we arrived last night it was just going to be a quick over night stop, but after Brett got talking to some people already camped here I knew instantly we were staying longer.

Brett and the kids were up and snorkelling for abalone first thing this morning. They were some what successful, enough to get a taste for it and want to go out again at another spot we have been told about near by. It was overcast and the boys said it was so cold with an eery feeling even though the water was only shallow and an enormous eagle ray gave them the fright of a lifetime 😳. While the boys snorkelled I was quite happy as there was an array of beautiful shells on the beach awaiting my collection.

A rainy drive out to explore a few other spots along the coast, hopefully the sun comes out tomorrow so we can snorkel Smooth Pool and explore Granites.

Yes, we pulled up and nabbed a spot in the small
but sufficient camp ground at Baird Bay, now we just need to wait for the sun so we can swim with the sea lions.

While we wait, Brett and the kids are more than happy to fish, so whiting for tea it is, not that I am complaining.

On the last night, Brett and the kids ducked out for one last fish, Brax got two big flat head (55cm) and Brett and Lachie got lots more whiting 😋.

  • Brett’s Adventures - Dolphin Experience

Surrounded, that’s what we were, surrounded by dolphins.

They came out of nowhere, we thought we weren’t going to see them, Brett said “I’ll put the drone away, that will bring them out” and literally as soon as he zipped up the bag, bam! There they were.

I couldn’t believe how many there were, they were on all sides of the boat, as well as underneath us, we didn’t know where to look. The smallest one was the most playful.

They were a very chilled out pod of dolphins, they were in the bay each day when we went out in the boat. We loved watching them and driving the boat along next to them as they cruised through the water.
