  • Road Trip - Cooktown

    28 września 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

    Day 2 continues….. onto Cooktown

After a big morning, we needed refreshments, so we called into the Lions Den for a drink and some lunch. The kids entertained themselves with a game of pool.

The kids loved reminiscing about all the things we did and places we visited on our Cape Trip a few years back.

The kids decided to stay in the car for the 2nd look out at Cooktown, Brett and I thought this was the best one.

    29 września 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Day 3 - Cooktown to Atherton

We finally made it to Atherton to visit the Crystal Cave. I have been wanting to come here and see all the amazing gems for a very long time. We did not crack a geod, as we watched some other people crack one and we all agreed that we had found better ones ourselves fossicking at Agate Creek, so we spent the money buying our birthstones and a few other stones just because we liked them 😆.

Lunch and a swim at Lake Eachem.

Platypus viewing on the way to our campsite was not to successful, we spotted one, but saw plenty of turtles.

Day 4: Cairns Sky Rail and Scenic Train

What a day to be going on the sky rail, we woke up to a bright sunny day.

Brax was a bit worried about the sky rail, but jumped aboard and only got a bit worried when the sky rail took off at a rapid speed to get going. Lachlan the dare devil loved the sky rail.

We stopped of at Barren Falls on the way up and then had a few hours at Kuranda before getting the scenic train back down the mountains.

We had lunch on the river, next to the beautiful rainforest. Then the boys had a game of putt putt golf while I went for a wander through the markets, which were quite disappointing. I was hoping for lovely home made items, but it was lots of china imported crap!

The train back down the mountain was a tad hot, but a great way to see the rainforest. Can you believe the train tunnels were dug by hand with only picks and shovels! And if you wanted a job working on the railway line, you had to have your own equipment (pick and shovel).

  • One last Island Trip

    2 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We couldn’t leave Babinda without one last trip to the Island, and it was a ripper of a day. The weather was perfect and the water temp even better and to top it off we had cocktail coconuts 😋🤗🤤.

  • Paronella Park

    4 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

We finally dragged ourselves away from Jared’s place after an amazing month of adventures, the fact that it was raining after a month of sunshine made us feel a bit better about leaving.

We had one last activity to do together, Paronella Park. In typical Brett style he left jobs to do until the morning we had to leave, once they were done we were on our way.

We all explored Paronella Park in the rain ☔️, then went back to the van for a quick dinner, not really leaving ourselves enough time in between our 3.30 day tour and our 6.45 night tour 😩, so we were a tad rushed.

The castle was a spectacular, with a very interesting tale:

José Paronella arrived in Australia from Catalonia in Spain, in 1913. For the next 11 years he worked, cutting sugar cane initially, then purchasing, improving, and reselling cane farms. In 1924 he returned to Spain and married Margarita in 1925. The trip back to Australia was their honeymoon.

José first saw this 13 acres of virgin scrub along Mena Creek in 1914. He eventually purchased it in 1929 for £120 and started to build his pleasure gardens and reception centre for the enjoyment of the public.

The earliest structure, the Grand Staircase, was built to facilitate the carrying of the river sand to make the concrete.

First they built a house to live in, then they started on the Castle itself.

Apart from the house, which is made of stone, all of the structures were constructed of poured, reinforced concrete, the reinforcing being old railway track. The concrete was covered with a plaster made from clay and cement, which they put on by hand, leaving behind the prints of their fingers as a reminder of the work they had done.

The most amazing thing about the castle was the fact it was hydro powered in the 1930’s. Power was a luxury and a must for a luxurious castle and this was the first hydro electric generator in QLD. With the endless supply of water from the waterfall the castle and gardens could be lit up with lights and they also had refrigeration which meant ice cream for everyone. José built the castle as a dream of creating a place of fantasy where many could relax and enjoy life, with tennis, musical performances, movie nights, dinners and dances, he’s passion was to share his most prized possession and with many he did.

Many floods and cyclones tried to flatten the structures and sections were heavily destroyed but the majority survived and it is a wonderful place to visit.

It was then it was back to the van for our goodbyes 😢😢

  • The Golden Gumboot

    5 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    The Golden Gumboot at Tully.

Luckily, Tracey had tipped us off that we could climb up to the top, so the boys were straight up the inside. The first ‘big thing’ we have been able to climb.

The town chose the gumboot as their symbol as they are the wettest town in Australia (or are in competition with Babinda). Czytaj więcej

  • Townsville

    5 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

It was great to call in at Townsville and catch up with Jeff, Linda, Holly and Caitlyn for the night. The kids had a blast at the park and then playing on the PlayStation. They were all disappointed when the girls had to go to bed, unfortunately it was a school night.

Brett and Jeff had jumped on the electric scooters and headed into town to give Brett a tour of his boat shop. Lachlan was devastated he missed out on using the scooter 😔.

A quick goodbye in the morning and we were off again.

  • Airlie Beach

    7 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

A stunner of a day spent on the fore shore of Airlie Beach.

Whist enjoying our fruit and chip break, Brett says to me is that Dawn Newton? Of course I had no idea, I had only meet her once years ago, so after stalking them on the beach for a while and still not being sure (Paul had a holiday beard which made him hard to recognise) Brett jumped on facebook for a recent photo. It was, so we went and crashed their quite arvo on the beach and caught up with them for a few hours. It’s amazing the people from home you see, whilst away from home. Czytaj więcej

  • Brett’s Birthday

    9 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

On Brett’s birthday there is never a shortage of food! First up, scrambled eggs with salami, ham, sun dried tomato and cheese on jalapeño sour dough.

Next, it was time to check out the surf, Brett and the boys all went out for a paddle together.

As we had no reception where we were staying, we packed up the nibbles and seafood and found a park for the day.

Brett set up the IPad for Bathurst, the kids had a playground and we had plenty of food! Fun for all 🤗

  • Catch ups with great mates

    13 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

The kids had been counting down the days until we arrived at Daniel and Emma’s. They have been hanging to see the kids. They had not seen them since we all went to Cape York together 5 years ago.

Within 5 min of arriving they were off and playing and we barley saw them unless the were hungry, thirsty or wanted us to take them somewhere, it was great.

They all got along great, they had a lot of late nights and laughs.

They spent hours on their skate boards and scooters, we explored parks, the markets, went swimming at beaches and the lagoon, got take away, but the funniest thing of all was probably the cane toad incident!

One night the boys (Daniel and Brett) took the kids to collect cane toads, Emma and I were chatting when they returned when they suddenly unleashed a box full of cane toads on us! Emma had cottoned on to what was happening, but I had not, as I ran screaming to get away I may have also wet my pants 😮😆😞! ( such arseholes the bunch of them)

  • White Water World

    14 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Our first theme park adventure was White Water World. Everyone was excited, Daniel’s girls ripped their dresses of and ran straight to a slide they missed out on last time, Lachlan was straight behind them, Brax suddenly realised how high up all the slides were.

After a few hours on the slides everyone was getting cold, so it was time to get dressed and head next door to Dreamworld.

The first ride they decided to do was the biggest roller coaster there 😕. Brax and I sat that one out! It made me feel sick knowing that Lachlan was going on it 😂, but being the dare devil he is, he loved it!

Lachlan went on every ride there was, he was upside down and spinning around more than he was walking, lucky Brett, Daniel and the girls were up for it because I was not!

By the end of the day we had all pushed ourselves to do something scary, Brax went on a roller coaster, I went on 2 that go upside down 😩! I told Brett how much I hate him for making me get on, but once it was over it was ok 😂.

It was a fun day, all the kids (except Brax) crashed out on the way home meaning they were ready to play again when we got back, but after dinner the parents were pooped and ready for bed.

There was a break in the rain so we escaped from the caravan and headed to Rainbow beach.

We had planned to drive along the beach to Double Island point, but the surf and swell was to big and we couldn’t get through.

Luckily, the surf was good at Rainbow Beach so Brett got 3 surfs in and we were able to make it to the rainbow sands ( which unfortunately is wet so our bags of coloured sand now need drying 😞).

  • Fraser Island

    24 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Well….. our amazing week that we had planned on Fraser Island went out the window when we saw the weather forecast!

Torrential rain for the entire week 😩, so we made the decision to cancel Fraser and book a caravan park at Tin Can Bay.

We spent the next 3 days trapped in the caravan, but after day one when we received 280mls of rain in 24 hours we decided we had made the right choice. There was so much rain even all the undercover areas were wet, there was nowhere to escape it!

We watched movie after movie, did school work and even pulled the Nintendo out and played a few games of Mario Cart.

Finally, the rain cleared. We all had a bit of cabin fever. We decided that 2 nights in Fraser was better then none, so we threw all the gear in and headed over.

We got sun, cloud and a little bit of rain on Fraser, but mostly sun.

We explored as much as we could in 4 days, the whole time wishing we had the 8! But at least Pete didn’t drive the whole way to Queensland to sit in our van 😬.

Day one: Beach fishing, dingoes and Eli Creek

  • Fraser Island - last day

    27 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Took the inland road to check out the lakes, saw the sand blow and Lake Wabby. The sand dune had significantly shrunk and the water was brown, so we moved onto Lake Mackenzie. We didn’t make it to any other lakes as Lake Mackenzie was bliss! Spent hours floating in the water while the kids played 👌.

Then, it was time to get the ferry back to the main land, wash the cars, have showers and hit up the local Chinese restaurant for dinner. Let’s just say our eyes were bigger than our bellies.

On our way down the coast we hit up White Water World and Dreamworld with Pete before he had to leave 😔. It was hot hot hot! So we hit the water slides up first, due to the heat there was no lines in Dreamworld, so we could get on all the rides over and over. Maybe to many times over, as we all were feeling a tad sick by the end of the day, so sick Pete accidentally bought a zero percent wine to have with dinner 😔😂. Czytaj więcej

  • What a Show! Gold Coast 500

    31 października 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

    Right place….. Right time!
The day started with a surf at Snapper Rocks then straight to the skate park for a hot dog breakfast and a skate. Talking with a local I found out that the V8 Supercars were on at Surfers Paradise, 40 minutes away. $117 online ticket sorted and we were on our way (kids are free yippee). Lauren opted out of this one to save some coin, plus V8’s are for the boys :)
We caught the end of the top ten shoot out, loads of low flying helicopters, side shows and displays. We witnessed first hand the biggest accident I have ever seen, and just had a great day. We finished it off with a beach beer and a lesson on public transportation, what can I say…….. it was an epic day!

  • Byron Bay / Ballina

    11 listopada 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

While I was back home for Mim’s 18th, Brett and the boys got up to Byron Bay and Ballina for a few nights.

In Byron Bay, they stayed at a camp ground that was a little shady, and some of the other more permanent campers got into it! But the kids did enjoy the giant blow up slides and jumping castles they had there during the day. Luckily, they didn’t have to stay there long as Snoop Az had plenty of room to park up at his place.

Az’s place in the trees had a much more relaxing vibe, which I was glad to come home too. The boys enjoyed picking fresh herbs out of his garden to cook with.

Lachlan had an epic surf on his new board at Lennox Beach after I arrived back with fins and a leg rope from the shed back home. He came out of the water with the biggest smile and couldn’t stop talking, he even got 2 barrels.
