• Head office work and cinema visit

    February 23, 2023 in Zambia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

This entire week we were working intensely from the WWF Zambia head office, where we were both offered our own desks to get work done from. Nice colleagues, good internet, proper desks. Can't ask for more 🎉

One thing I wanted to point out is that in many parts of Africa it is possible to observe placated adverts for some hocus pocus fix-it-alls. One of these I'm sharing in the pictures, a doctor who can bring back lost lovers to you and get you promoted at work while he is at it. These have all kinds of specialties, some are even openly advertising the use of witchcraft to solve your problems.

One thing that is important when living a remote lifestyle while traveling is to keep things "normal". We had a few semi stable routines, such as exercising in the mornings. Another thing we did to keep grounded was to go to the cinema while in Lusaka. We couldn't really find any showing schedules listed online, so we just showed up to one of the bigger cinemas. The plan was to select a movie, go for dinner, then watch the movie.

Well, when we arrived we only had 25min before the start of the movie we chose: Black Panther - Wakanda Forever, a Marvel action movie based in African tribal culture. The time was only sufficient to wolf down a Greek salad and a portion of fries from the steakhouse adjacent to the cinema, then off we went with popcorn to watch the movie. It was a good movie, though our taxi driver who drove us home told us that he didn't feel it was super African, as the African accents all sounded fake to his ears and it was mostly based on Ugandan traditions and less the greater Africa.

Well, we couldn't respond much to the cultural implications, but concluded to ourselves that it was definitely a well produced action movie.

Just before we went to the cinema we also had a taxi drop us off in the middle of a busy market zone in Lusaka - Town Center Market. That was quite an experience, and for security reasons I did not dare to take out my phone. There were thousands of people there, bustling and hustling everywhere. We were largely unbothered by obnoxious sellers, with one or two exceptions. We did, however, get stared at a lot. We ended up buying some nuts and then went off to the cinema 😊
