Route 66, known affectionately as "The Mother Road" is the quintessential cross-country road trip experience. From Chicago through the beating heart of America and down to Los Angeles, the route officially ends at the Santa Monica Pier. The road reached peak popularity in the late 40's and early 50's before being officially removed from the US Highway System in 1985. After a few years, travelers from America and beyond started feeling tinges of nostalgia, and by the end of the 1980's it was fast becoming one of the most popular road trip routes once more.

Vinit and I had always wanted to travel the historic route 66 that stretches from Chicago to Santa Monica, spanning over more than 5 states. We picked memorial weekend this year, time of the year that transitions from spring to summer, the most ideal and pleasant weather pretty much all along this historic highway, to finally do this road trip, we plan to do this from Dallas TX to Santa Ana CA. Accompanying us is Vinit's brother, Harshal who is visiting us from India & he sure is for a big surprise!!!

The first highlight of this exciting trip was a quick pit stop at Starbucks to meet my childhood friend Melody along with her husband Danny & just turned one year old Liam, such an adorable and playful toddler ... missing him already :(

190 foot tall free standing cross. Surrounding the base of the cross are life-sized statues of the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Stations of the Cross describe the Way of the Cross; this is also called Way of Sorrows (Via Crucis). This refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. The stations were made from imitations of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem which is believed to the be the actual path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary. The object of the stations is to help the Christian faith to make a spiritual pilgrimage through the Passion of Christ.En savoir plus

Texas known as the Panhandle because of the way it juts north from the rest of Texas, this part of the route is a nearly 200-mile stretch of pancake-flat plains. Almost devoid of trees or other features, the western half, stretching into New Mexico, is also known as the Llano Estacado or “Staked Plains,” possibly because early travelers marked their route by driving stakes into the earth. The Texas Panhandle was the southern extent of the buffalo-rich grasslands of the Great Plains, populated by roving bands of Kiowa and Comanche Indians as recently as 100 years ago. Now oil and gas production, as well as trucking and Route 66 tourism, have joined ranching as the region’s economic basis.

Even more so than in New Mexico or Oklahoma, old Route 66 has been replaced by I-40 most of the way across Texas, though in many of the ghostly towns, like McLean or Vega and the sole city, Amarillo old US-66 survives as the main business strip, lined by the empty remains of roadside businesses. A select few are still open for a cup of coffee and a sharp taste of the living past.

  • Cadillac ranch, TX

Thought overlay of thousands of travelers in Graffiti on Cadillacs, beginning with those of the art group Ant Farm. Pretty sure the thoughts of its creators in 1974 are deep buried in the layers of colored spray.

Cadillac ranch consists of what were either older running used or junk Cadillac automobiles, representing a number of evolutions of the car line (most notably the birth and death of the defining feature of mid twentieth century Cadillacs: the tailfins) from 1949 to 1963, half-buried nose-first in the ground, at an angle corresponding to that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.

  • Laguna Pueblo

    Trivia!!!

Ever heard of horse hair pottery?!

This is a unique style of pottery prominent in the Pueblo Indian conservation area - clay pots from out of the kiln are embedded with horse mane & tail hair for thin & thick lines respectively; further etched with designs & color.

Fried bread with lightly sugared cinnamon is a popular delicacy here & tasted absolutely delicious, I think it's very similar to our Indian charuti (festive dessert in Karnataka).

Another interesting fact was that of the kachina - Katchina is a spirit being in western Pueblo religious beliefs of Native American cultures of Acoma Pueblo, Laguna Pueblo located in the southwestern United States. There are aspects to the katchina: the supernatural being, the kachina dancers(masked members of the community who represent kachinas at religious ceremonies), and kachina dolls, small dolls carved in the likeness of kachinas.

This is a cute little tourist town along hwy 66, lined by a number of antique & souvenir stores. We ate at Station 66 Italian bistro; this was a very busy restarant that brews its own beer to go along with wood fired pizzas & pastas. The server was courteous to arrange a tomato basil soup for us though it was not on their menu. There was live music entertainment, well enjoyed in the patio area though we couldn't much since we were seated inside.En savoir plus
