  • Day 18

    West Coast

    January 6, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

I had one if my best nights of sleep yet, with the pitter patter of rain on the roof of our campervan. We then had a very rainy day driving from Arthur's Pass down to glacier country. We stopped at Hokitika Gorge, which was supposed to have that beautiful milky teal water like Huka Falls, but because of the weather or something, it very much did not. We still enjoyed walking the paths along the gorge and climbing out on the rocks and bridges.

Since it was still pouring rain, we opted for some indoor activities in the town of Hokitika. We dropped in and watched local artists in the glass blowing and bone/stone carving shops and looked in some other local craft shops. We also stopped at the National Kiwi Center, where we got to see some giant eels and 2 kiwi that they are fostering until they can be released into the wild.

We're now settled into our campsite for the night and crossing our fingers that the weather improves enough for us to go on our heli- ice climbing trip in the morning! 🤞🤞🤞
