We are trying a new theory of shifting time zones before getting to the destination! This was Carlos’ idea and so far it seems to be working! Yesterday we woke up at 4 am and today 2 am to hopefully get us to sleep all the way to Italy.

We have been having morning coffee together and going to the gym! Today we are headed to HEB to “rope drop” to get some food for the flight.

We are looking forward to an awesome week! It’s been 2 years to the week since my trip around the world, and our last Europe trip which is crazy! This is a kick off to a lot of travel in the next 14 months including Italy, Japan, and India!Read more

rant time! So all week I had been calling delta because I felt like an hour and 15 min at JFK was too tight with an international flight when the original flight I booked had 2 hours. They say they can’t move us, whatever I accept it. Well we depart from AUS early, and what happens you might ask??? We get stuck on the tarmac for 30 min at JFK, okay fine we reduce to a 45 min layover. What happens next? Our flight to Rome gets MOVED UP by 15 MINUTES. Okay so we have now a 33 min layover. Are the gates next to each other? Oh you know they’re not. THEYRE NEARLY A MILE APART!!

So we go to the bus, which delta recommended, where is the bus driver? On a break! So they tell us to run and we have 10 min to get there. I hope you enjoy this post! This is all with 30 pounds ON MY BACK. Also my shoe was untied the .9 miles we ran!

Also it’s 5:47, they moved departure up to 5:15, and the door is still open!Read more

First coffee in Rome!

Story time! Carlos and I are having obviously kinda dead from the travel day so we get coffee before going to the air bnb. Well I order the Chocolate Calada thinking ooo yum mocha. Nope it was a hot chocolate and it was like literally chocolate that was made hot, quite literally like fondue. I ended up getting an espresso to try and mix it, that also did not work.

We got the thing called “hot dog” which seemed similar to a kolache. It was pretty good too!Read more

TravelerI received the same thing when I ordered a hot chocolate in Santiago, Spain to go with the churro. It was like they gave me melted chocolate frosting. I thought they forgot to add the hot milk. Sooo odd.

Our air bnb is incredible! It’s the perfect size for 2, and the view is incredible (last slide) we are right above this daily market too that has lots of restaurants. Had our first (but not last) pasta meal!Read more

First Gelato of Italy & Spanish Steps

After arriving in Rome we decided to take a quick post lunch nap then wander around! We stopped for gelato which was outstanding. The Spanish steps were pretty but nothing too crazy in my opinion. We did stop by the McDonald’s near them and I added some of the fun things on the menu from there. It was a nice couple hours of just getting used to Rome and keeping moving after the flight.Read more

Experiencing the night life in Roma!

We decided to check out some of the night life in Rome! This was very ambitious for our first day, but since it was Saturday we really wanted to get out there and experience it. Our friends from Austin also were in Rome for a night, so we met up with them and went out in Travestere! It was fun drinking from fancy wine glasses in the club. Iliana and Marisa also both speak Spanish like Carlos so it made ordering in the club easy since Spanish is similar to Italian!Read more

Colosseum and Roman Forum!

Like I said our first 24 hours in Rome was very ambitious. We had an 8 am tour of the Colosseum. The thing we learned quickly is tours here are good for two reasons. One being you get a lot more information and two you get to skip a lot of the lines. We also learned Sunday is the busiest day to tour the Colosseum since the Vatican is closed. It was a cool experience! We learned that Europe had lions until they made them extinct from arena fighting which was crazy. The Roman Forum was cool. It would be very cool to see Rome at its prime.Read more

Exploring Trastevere

We decided to go back in the day to explore Trastevere! It was nice and had a lot of places to stop and eat and have wine. We ate dinner at a place some flight attendants we know recommended! It was outstanding. It’s been interesting too seeing the opinions of the US here. There have been quite a few trump references here specifically talking about Gaza.Read more

We went to the Jerry Thomas speakeasy in Rome! Jerry Thomas is considered the father of cocktails and was the first person who wrote a book on cocktails! You have 105 minutes and making a reservation here is crucial! It was outstanding and one of Carlos’ favorite stops in Rome.Read more

Early Morning at the Vatican!

Another early morning at the Vatican! We started our tour in the Vatican Museum, saw the Sistine chapel, and St. Peter’s basilica! The museum was outstanding and sadly we couldn’t stay in there longer because we had to get to St. Peter’s before it got too crazy. This year is a jubilee year, so it’s a lot busier than normal. Our tour was all Americans, and we even saw a Buc-ee’s shirt in the Vatican.

I think the craziest thing about seeing the Vatican in person was understanding how much money and how many artifacts the church has. It was like seeing a Smithsonian owned by a church. Some truly priceless pieces. Such a good visit and we learned a lot!Read more

Pantheon

We did a tour of the Pantheon during our last night in Rome. Definitely cool to see the world’s largest non reinforced dome. It was interesting to learn about how it was a church for all gods, and then became a monotheistic church, and now is a burial site. It is one of those places you can see the passage of time over the course of 2000 years in it, but it doesn’t look THAT old. Very cool stop overall.Read more

Getting our bearings in Naples! We had a half day here so we decided to walk around and just try food, and explore the city. Naples is definitely the poorest city in Italy. It’s nice but has reminders id say of southweast asia, not typical Italy. There is a lot of graffiti here which seems to be a theme from 2000 years ago as well, and they still have some great food. One of the most surprising things I’d say is how you can find pasta anywhere in Rome, it’s harder to find here. Here you can find pizza anywhere!!Read more

This has been I think my favorite restaurant we have stopped at on the trip! The owner (old man in the photo) came to the table and Carlos tried to order and he basically said no you want this one, it was incredible! The meat and cheese plate was also outstanding. You start the tour off in the main city square and see city hall, a temple to Apollo, and the forum. This part of Pompei felt like the Roman forum in Rome, but still cool because it was so old! The view from here to Mount Vesuvius is incredible.Read more

This was one of the first things we saw. Apparently when the ash came down, the people obviously perished very quickly, but they were able to insert a plaster mixture to get how they were positioned in their final moments. It was incredibly amazing to see considering this happened nearly 2,000 years ago.Read more

Roman Bath Houses

Next up we got to see the Roman Bath Houses! We learned a few things about them! First they have the cooling and heating sections, but the things I learned is that they were able to have heated walls using hot water in the cold room! They would have the steam go up into the walls.

The other interesting thing is that it was open to people of all class types because of how the Roman’s prioritized cleanliness. They did cost money but all were welcome. They were separated by gender. It’s amazing to see how intact these ones still are!Read more

First Ancient Roman House

We saw 2 houses on the tour and this was the first one! The homes we saw were of the richer class which in Pompei a lot of times were actually ex slaves. They had an earthquake 17 years prior that ran many of the elite out so slaves who had been given freedom in some cases took over these houses. This house we saw was 3,000 sq feet (largest in Pompei was around 9,000 it sounded like). We learned here that a lot of times they slept in the main area incase someone came inside to attack them they would be ready. The main area also had a fountain.

We also learned here that the depections of Roman’s laying down to eat was not just for the wealthy they believed it was good for digestion so they had couches out in a public area instead of a dining table. Homes were max of 2 stories.Read more

Second Roman House

So this was a house owned by two brothers and the second one we saw! The Frescos (paintings) in this house were amazing! They have done no restoration on them and this is how they were found. They help up so well because the Roman’s would use plaster and mix it with paint on the final layer (typically 7 layers) it was incredible to see the paintings that these people had in their homes at these times.Read more

This was definitely one of the most packed places in Pompei! They had slaves staff the brothel and allowed anyone to just come up at any point of day. The most interesting part was they had “advertising” around Pompei with the stone penises that point in the direction of the brothel! I think the coolest thing about this was seeing how advertising has been a thing since early times.Read more
