Good flight from London Heathrow (Suzanne and Phil took us as guests in the vip lounge). On arrival transport was there to meet us and take us to 7 August Alley in the North Beach area.

Brilliant day. We walked down to the bay and walked along Pier 39 to see the sea lions and stopped for coffee. Afterwards we booked an open top bus tour which took us all round the city. As our bus was a smaller one the guide took us over the Golden Gate Bridge and back along the route. We had a meal in ihop and then walked along to Fisherman's Wharf to buy our passes for the cable cars. we queued for quite a while for the Mason Powell car to Union Square and then back on the Mason line and stopped off near our apartment. sat down with a welcome glass of wine.Read more

Alcatraz

Today we boarded the 10.30am ferry to Alcatraz. We followed the audio cell house tour and learned all about prison life, some of the notorious inmates including Al Capone. Later we had lunch in the Hard Rock Cafe and had another wander along Pier 39, bought an ice cream, sat for a while and then caught the bus back to apartment.Read more

Today we rode the cable car to the cable car museum. We learned how the cable cars work - very interesting. We then went to pick up the hire car. Chris yielded to temptation and upgraded to a SUV and we drove out in a Chevrolet Suburban. Very comfy. Later on Chris and I went out for a drive and went over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. We had a pleasant wander around, stopped for a coffee and drove back to San Francisco. We decided to go down the famous Lombard Street - the crookedest Street. Great. This evening we went to China Town admiring the quaint shops and had a meal in a restaurant called House of Nazeing. Interesting experience.Read more

Next adventure - off to Mariposa

Today we left San Francisco for our 3 day trip to Las Vegas. Before we left the city we took a ride down the famous Lombard Street that twists and turns down hill. Chris negotiated the tight bends very well. I believe part of a Steve McQueen movie was filmed here. We then headed out across the Bay Bridge to our destination of Mariposa. We stayed in a very nice Best Western with outdoor pool and jacuzzi, relaxing before going for a meal.Read more
