  • Made it to Nyngan. Night 1

    14 September 2024, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

It was a night tent setup and dinner which made it a little more crazy, but got there in the end :-)

This Caravan park is brilliant. On the rivers edge, night birds tweeting over the chilly wind and a character filled camp area with a fire place and smooth half log seats.

4-17degrees so a little bit chilly.

Our hands were numb this morning, but it is so beautiful

  • The big Bogan

    15 September 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

    Big Bogan ✅
Made even better by the real life example of two guys fishing who had a remarkable likeness! Hehehe.

Merry took a tumble off the Bogan and landed superwoman style on the concrete. She was brave to still take a photo!
The Bogan Shire has been country quiet on a Sunday and we are on the Road now to Whitecliffs via Poopelloe Lake and Cobar!

Just stopped for a quick leg stretch only for the most friendly goat to join us :-)

After getting back on the road we finally saw our first Australian emblem animal... All up circa 20 emus today which was great :-) still no roos so far...Baca selengkapnya

  • White Cliffs underground Motel

    15 September 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

An old opal mine full of winding tunnels and almost level hallways 😍
Feel a bit like a dwarf and I’m thankful we aren’t setting the tent up in the cold wind today.
The cats travelled like a dream! Cuddled together or snuggled with Nelly and Bo even did his business conveniently before we set off from Nyngan.

We’ve watched the video…in the beginning…and it’s become inextricably linked to Nyngan for us. 🤣

    Day 2: wildlife update…
    Emu’s ✅ (21)
    Roo’s ❌ (0) so weird.
    Snakes ✅ (1)
Goats ✅ (bazillion, including a super friendly black and white goat now named Sir Pops a lot.)

Merry’s favourite part: the playground at Nyngan
    Jeff’s: Cobar
Nelly: seeing a bunch of Emu’s at one time and going out of the car with Dad to take a photo with my Polaroid.

    16 September 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Yup, just petrol... And a sweet lady walked past us celebrating that she had a grandson just born in the hospital, she just had to tell us and we are celebrating with her :-)

  • Broken Hill Quick stop

    16 September 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

A quick stop after a long straight drive through 100’s of kilometres of red dirt and small scrub completely pocketed with wildflowers!
But we couldnt stop for the flowers this time…we are already destined to be setting up in the dark tonight!Baca selengkapnya

  • Arrival in Peterborough

    16–17 Sep 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

It's a cold one tonight. Forecast down to -1... Wish us luck :-)

The horses we met on the way in are now named, 🐴🐴🐴Gallahop/Peter, Buck and Buttercup. They were skittish and friendly in one and loved the grass we were feeding them.

…and just a bit of co-op Kirby on the switch with chocolate and Bailey’s / Whiskey to unwind. I swear no made how many times I told the kids to whisper the whole camp ground full of grey nomad caravans trying to get to sleep heard their constant stream of consciousness chatter while we tried to set up the tent!

And finally 3 Kanagroos on the dusk drive into Peterborough! Still many more Emu’s and so many sweet striped baby Emu’s. 😍

  • Leaving Peterborough

    17–18 Sep 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

It was a COLDY night and the condensation was next level making it a WET morning. We took our time drying most things out in a crisp zero humidity morning sun!

Our heated blankets were the difference between being cold and miserable and warm and adventurous! And tea and toast and coco pops are a holiday cereal start!

The Caravan park had friendly people, a pool and mini golf! ⛳️

Also SA has great internet even in the middle of no where.

  • Port Augusta Water Tower

    17 September 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

A perfect lunch stop, warm, lush grass underfoot, quiet with butterflies 🦋 floating by and easy food of ham and cheese wraps. Both kitties loved exploring the park and we climbed the lookout tower. Nelly and Jeff climbed it a second time cause she is so determined to retry things that make her afraid.

Then we went to some 5 star public toilets! Way to go SA!

What magic... The photos speak for themselves

  • Labatt Point - Sea Lions

    18 September 2024, Australia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Gorgeous ‘overlook’ spot with edge to edge water and interesting rocks making a pretty although well camouflaged sea lion habitat. Ocean rocks also making an unusual variation of waves and swell.
    But alas no whales yet.
We are a bit body tired of the physical effort of setting up and packing down back to back, being office worker city slickers. It was good to have a quieter day.

The kids would probs only rate it 1 star though. The gravel was more interesting and the proximity of the platform to the cliff made Noa on high alert especially with climbing oriented kids! 🧗‍♀️

  • Whale watching

    19 September 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I can't believe how well this went!

Absolutely stunning and captivating. I couldn’t take my eyes off these two massive mumma Southern Right Whales and their baby calves. They played and rolled and splashed and blew water and it was absolutely magic! Again thank you Jesus. They haven’t had whales this late in the season for years. These whales will leave this bay shortly and not return for 4 years. They will probably go to Agentina and Antartica and back but no one really knows. With about 12,000 in the world left it was so very special.

We were on a little cruiser with a class full from the Ceduna Lutheran school camp and the captain Rod and his first mate Tyson sure knew their stuff.

Managed to forget the sunscreen and the kids came away dusted pink! ☀️

  • Eucla - the Nullabor

    19–20 Sep 2024, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

    What’s up here?
Good question…. We rolled in at dark o’clock and were unable to upgrade to a cabin. So we stretched our muscles and hustled. And the tent was set up in no time made easier by Merry having fallen asleep in the car. But we had eaten cereal and fancy cheese and crackers supper in the car so it was just a matter of a stinging water pressure shower and finishing my book underneath a warm blanket! Quite pleasant actually.

4.43am I woke up and found the tent flap unzipped about 30cm and although Bo was snuggled up, like the oblivious orange cat that he is, there was no sign of Susan.

I woke Noa, who put warm clothes and shoes on with silent dread. And with clenched innards feared the worst when I heard him fumbling with the tent zip two minutes later. But instead of Noa’s head it was him pushing Susan back into the tent and I smothered her with cuddles. She hadn’t wandered far and came back to his clicking fingers. Thankyou Jesus.

The morning brought no further unexpected adventure and instead we chatted with our grey nomad neighbours. The van on the left giving us their fruit and veg as they prepared to hit the SA Border and the van on the right packing up and setting off to Balladonia ahead of us.

  • Balladonia

    20–21 Sep 2024, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

These little caravan parks are like a servo/pub/caravan park/truck rest stop all rolled into one. There is not much else to this little ‘town’. It has quaint trees, gravel and powered sites with a fantastic shower (ie: good volume, pressure and direction of water) with very cute rounded narrow doors.

However the flies were in the thousands and were swarming on us. Tiny flies, easy to squash but so many you could kill forty hundred, as Marry would say, and the were just all over our faces.

Fortunately the cool night breeze saw them all retreat to wherever they sleep and we got some relief.

We are looking forward to checking out the tiny museum (literally inside the servo/restaurant) for the bit of space thingy that fell here.
