    Kylie and Dale go exploring

    August 23, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today the girls needed some time for school work and really, parents just get in the way 😜😜

So we decided we’d go explore the underground cities of Cappadocia.

We grabbed a dolmas and were headed for Kaymakli but after missing that stop and talking to a local on the buses we “decided” to take her advice to go to Derinjuyu. And that turned out to be great advice.

Derinkuyu is the biggest underground city in Türkiye. It is 6 levels and had sleeping quarters, animal pens, and churches, not to mention a hospital, school, “air conditioning”, “refrigeration”, and - crucially - wine presses and storage areas!

However, whilst narrow, low ceiling corridors and uncomfortably spaced steps might have been a great defence in the ancient world, they do wear thin on us modern types so it was a bit of a relief to finish up and head for some gözleme before heading back to mark some school work 😜😜
