Italy

In an attempt to get a return on our school fee investment of 6 years of Italian we’re taking Keyala to Italy so she can bargain with gondola drivers for a buona price.
Our bags are full of 50 FFP2 masks, 20 RAT tests, 5 shields and litres of sanny.

    April 11, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

2:30am So after news reports of mega lines at Sydney airport we arrived 3.5 hrs before our flight.. and we weren’t the first ones. The line up was huge after we checked in - suckers. But we got through so quick security wasn’t even open so we had to line up there too.Read more

  • Stopping by Dubai

    April 11, 2022 in the United Arab Emirates ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

    14.5 hour into our journey

✈️ It was a long trip to Italy. Together, the plane rides were about 20 hours and 10 movies long. The food on the plane was pretty good, it made us look forward to the food actually in Italy. I tried to sleep on the plane but getting comfortable was difficult. On the second flight the plane was much emptier which meant mum was less worried about all the coughs. It also meant that keyala got three seats to herself to lay down on (so unfair). We were all pretty tired and jet lagged for like a week after the flight, but Ariah still considered it one of her favourite parts of the holiday. ✈️Read more

  • We’re there. Where are they?

    April 12, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Ariah was pretty sure our airport hotel was 5star when she saw the breakfast buffet. Multiple torte, juices, meats and cheeses.
We wrangled public transport to get to our accommodation and waited for the owner to hand over the keys… and waited … and waited… and had a pizza and birra… and waited… until we finally realised it was il scammo. A quick change of plans and several thousand euro later we arrived at our luxury back up plan, dropped off our backpacks and headed to see Leonardo DaVinci’s Last Supper.Read more

  • Panzarotti, Piazzas and Prada

    April 13, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

This morning we had another deluxe buffet breakfast and then we were off to a walking tour around Milan. The tour guide was really informative and kept everyone engaged with some Britney lyrics and judgy history nerd quips. Definitely the right person for our family. We saw the stumbling stones which acknowledge victims of prejudice in history, we learnt about the history of the largest cathedral in the world (tad excessive in my opinion but still very beautiful). We went to the golden triangle where you could look at (but never touch) the designer clothes and stores like Prada and Gucci. Dad spun on Torino’s Bull’s balls for good luck. Then we went to Panzerotti Luini a store with delicious Panzerotti suggested by Prof. Falconi. I got a sweet chocolate and pistachio but I was kinda toucan once I saw everyone else’s warm and fluffy savoury panzerotti.
Afterwards, I got two vintage scarves and Ariah got a ring that she lost a record number of 4 times in the next two days. Then, we got gelato from a scary lady and I spoke Italian with her. I was so nervous but I think she understood me. That evening we went to a pasta restaurant and we’re served by a very clever lady that noticed our tired blank faces we’re capable of saying much except ‘si’ and up sold everything.

470 steps up and down to the best view in Milan at the top of the Duomo while the cardinal says mass.

Dinner from Zia Esterina Sorbillo. If you think pizza is good you’ve got to try fried pizza at the bargain price of 3.50 euros. Add a peroni and a stool in the next door piazza. What more could you ask for.Read more

  • Easter, Botticelli and bodgy lifts

    April 17, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

We went to the Easter mass where they played loud drums and they were wearing big hats with feathers. The fireworks were loud and scary. I had to go on dad’s shoulders because I couldn’t see. After that we went to lunch in an alley way at caffe al Torre. Next we went to the uffizi Gallery tour. My favourite painting was the la primavera by Botticelli. Then we went to the cheese bar to have our own aperitivo at home, but unfortunately me and India got stuck in an old elevator and couldn’t get out. Lucky I had lollies with me! Dad quickly got us out and then we had cheese and crackers. Keyala and I were too tired to go out for dinner so only India, mum and dad went out for dinner.

    April 19, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Tenuta di Capezzana. We drove up winding narrow roads through little villages to the top of a mountain with views back to Florence to taste some red wines in one of the oldest wineries in the region. It was picturesque and a fantastic way to start our road trip today. A winery cat and winery dog were there too to annoy the owner and excite the kids. Keyala was not too keen on her first wine tasting experience.Read more

  • Cinque Terre

    April 19, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We popped over to the Cinque Terre town of Riomaggiore for sunset. We had some yummy gelato, hot chips and fish croquettes. We watched the shiny fish in the sparkling water and wondered what was making the mysterious circle in the water.

We headed home very late for an Italian timing dinner of Pumpkin ravioli and cheese and pepper sauce made in our apartment.
