    Kingscote

    Dec 8–15, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Left our accommodation at American River early, around 8am. Got a coffee from KI roasters from a coffee van on the beach. Good coffee!!
Headed to Kingscote, stopped at the Island Beehive store. A great store with heaps of honey products. Bought some honey as we couldn't bring any with us. Great shop 👌! We got honey ice-creams & enjoyed them while sitting outside in the sun. Only about 18 degrees today but it was warm in the sun as there was no wind.
Went into Kingscote & went out on the Jetty.
Then walked down the main street, managed to get some books for free from the Op shop.
Went to Emu Bay & visited the Emu Bay lavender shop where we had lunch. I had pork dumplings with salad & Peter had goat curry - both were good. Place was not as accessible as advertised.
Went to Shoal Bay & visited the Winery 🍷.
Did some tasting & bought some. Pelicans came up to us at the beach.
Arrived back to American River late afternoon.

  • Rain

    December 11, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Woke really early & raised the roller blinds to see the sunrise 🌅 but it was cloudy. Had a quiet morning reading as it rained steadily. Peter got coffees from KI roasters cart again at 8.30am when it opened.
Left our apartment at 1pm & went to KI Airport & had a coffee, apple tart with spelt base & muffin at KI Providore inside the terminal.
Drove into Nepean Bay on the way back to American River.
    A quiet day today.

  • Seal Bay, Emu Ridge, Ralpto Domain

    December 11, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Got a coffee from KI Roasters coffee van. I got talking to a woman who I found out was staying in the apartment below us - Appt 2 of Sunrise on Falie.
Headed to Seal 🦭 Bay. Sea Lion colony. We went out on the board walk. Fantastic views of Seal Bay. The cubs were very active. The female seals are grey. They go out for 3 days at a time to catch food so they lie around when they return to recover. The cubs are left alone for those 3 days. In the hot weather the seals will come up as far as the visitor centre to lie under the bushes in the shade. Saw the skeleton of a junior humpback whale.
Left Seal Bay & went to Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery for lunch. I got talking to a NZ woman who worked there, that was free entertainment!! Watched the 5 minute video there & had lunch. We had to hurry because we wanted to do the 2.30pm Raptor Domain show. It was great as there was only about 15 of us in the audience so we all got to carry or touch the birds. One of the owls flew straight towards us & I got a great photo of it.
At the end we were asked if we wouldn't mind staying behind. They had a wedge trail eagle which was in training & they wanted it to become accustomed to a wheelchair or more particularly wheels. The eagle was very affectionate to the handler & shy. It was a female. Females are smaller than male WT Eagles.
After the show we went on to look at Vivonne Bay.
We then headed back towards 'home' & a outfit called Ki Tru Thai. This is a food van inside a shed/s with seating & tables for about 150. It is only open on Thurs nights. We had been told about it by a few locals but food wasn't good. Fortunately we got there only 15 mins after it opened & were ready to leave 5 mins after the live music started (was loud & not that good).
Headed back to our apartment & custard tart that Peter had made & a cup of tea & quiet evening before bed time.

  • Food

    December 12, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Started out day at 9am with a coffee from KI Coffee roasters. Headed to Kingscote to go to Les Doceurs de Sooz. Susie opens on Friday morning only. She is from north eastern France (Metz I think she said) near the border with Germany. Amazing range of sweets/cakes/tarts/biscuits. She closes at 2pm on Fridays. Today she has a stall at the pageant xmas market in Kingscote from 4pm to 8pm this evening 😟, wow that's a busy day, probably all after baking since early hours of the morning.
Across the road from the small shop was some great silo art.
We headed back to the apartment as it was hot so put our pastries in the fridge, we then headed to Penneshaw & Dudley Wines. We had booked for 12.30pm lunch. We had some wine with a dip platter & a grill Master pizza - chorizo, salami, red pepper, olives & red onion topped with a creamy horseradish topper/Mayo- Yum.
Went into Penneshaw & had a look around before heading back to American River for an iced coffee at KI Coffee roasters (Owner; Peter). It was really hot this afternoon.
Went back to our apartment & had a bit of a pastry we got this morning.
The apartment took a while to cool down using the air conditioner, can't believe how hot it was today & there was no sea breeze.
Dinner tonight was chicken & leak pie from the French bakery.
By 7.30pm the temperature dropped. The 🐦 birds went crazy, swooping & warbling away.
We had a delicious late night snack of chocolate
Mousse cake (brown & cream layered one) 😋. It wasn't sickly or heavy like I thought it could be!!

  • Admiral Arch, Remarkable Rocks

    December 13, 2025 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

Woke early but by the time I was dressed & had breakfast we didn't leave until 8.15am. Got a coffee from KI Coffee roasters. A windy morning. This proved helpful because the flies were bad. Yesterday it was so still.
We headed to the Flinders Chase National Park. After a 90 minute drive we arrived at the visitors centre to pay our park fee. There's no park fees this summer because of algal bloom.
Went on the board walk to the Admiral Arch it had steps at the end so Peter went down & took photos of the Arch.
I took so many photos of the regrowth in the area.
We then drove to Remarkable Rocks, the boardwalk is new after the 2019/20 fires & really good. Took heaps of photos of the rocks but again of the regrowth as well.
Went back to our apartment before we went down to food van for
Vietnamese dinner. Got dumplings & beef noodle bowl. Was told about the van by Peter (the coffee man). Food alright but wouldn't go back.
After dinner we enjoyed our last pastry we bought yesterday - a pear & almond tart!!! Wow plan to go to the Penneshaw Mkt on Monday because Susie will be there & we'll buy more, as her cakes are fantastic.
Took some more photos of the windows in our apartment as it's been such a special view from this apartment, sadly my photos don't do it justice.

  • Kingscote

    December 14, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Left at 9am for Kingscote market. Hmmm very small market 🤭!! Caught up with NZ lady we met at Emu Ridge. She introduced us to another lady who could help me with care if we visit in the future.
Went up to the main street to Cactus Cafe. We had coffee with flour less chocolate cake & chocolate salted caramel tart. Great coffee, cake & tart.
Walked/wheeled along the foreshore. It was a lovely day & free of flies ☺️! Saw a great tidal pool where I could get access to the water to go swimming if it was much hotter. It was only 21° today.
Drove to Emu Bay to check out another house we would like to find somewhere else to stay as we'd like to come back to the island again. Rang the owner but was only able to leave a message. From the outside it looks like it would work, just need to check the bathroom. As we were driving away the owner rang back, we arranged to meet her tomorrow morning at the house.
Went back to our apartment & had cheesecake that Peter had made with a cup of tea. Relaxed & read books this afternoon.
Peter went down & bought fish & chips with salad from The Deck Cafe in American River. Was great to watch the birds 🐦 fly around while we ate dinner.
Packed as much as we could as we have to be out of the apartment at 10am tomorrow & we are getting the ferry back at 2.30pm. A very quiet & relaxing day.

  • Kingscote - Penneshaw - home

    December 15, 2025 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Left our apartment by 8.30am to go to the Penneshaw Cruise market. We only went to buy more pastries as we knew Susie (from Les Douceurs de Sooz bakery) was planning to have a stall. Peter spotted her stall straight away. Bought 4 pastries then had a look at the other stalls.
Drove to Kingscote (45 mins) & contacted the owners of Emu Bay Holiday homes & arranged to meet them at Amani, the accessible house in their group of houses. Dirk met us there & showed us through it. Worried the cleaner as she thought we were there to move in because apparently they have many moving out/ in today. The house was amazing!!! 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom & 2 living areas!! Fantastic view of Emu Bay. Just looking at it it would suit my needs better. We found our accommodation & surrounds quite difficult this week. Amani even had two sinks in the accessible bathroom so if a person is unable to stand they can use the lower basin, 👏!! This property had many other features that will make it a holiday for us, it is so well thought out.
Went to Cactus Cafe for coffee & eggs on toast, Peter had the Mexican brekky which was much better.
Drove back to Penneshaw , looked around. There were many people from the cruise ship wandering around aimlessly 🤨! All we felt like was an ice cream 🍦, we finally got one from Drakes Foodland 😜. My drumstick ice cream was good but the cone was stale. Doesn't seem like ice cream is popular here. I always feel like one at the beach.
The trip back on the ferry was an hour. It was only half full.
