  • On our way

    8 de junho de 2022, Inglaterra ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Relatively easy check in process at PDX. Bike boxes just slid under 50 lbs! A few drinks for the road and an on time departure. Able to spread out across 3 seats! On time arrival in heathrow but stuck on the tarmac while awaiting shuttle buses. Long security lines but fortunately have plenty of time - 8 hour layover.Leia mais

  • Lisbon sights

    9 de junho de 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Late night arrival into Lisbon and despite some challenges finding transport big enough to haul us and bikes to our AirBnB, made it around 2 am and crashed. Awoke to a sunny late morning. Coffee and pastries and assemble the bikes. Spent the day wandering around with no real destinations. Toured a castle high on the hill, found a busy indoor market, drank Ginga (cherry liquor) and went to the fried sardine festival ( San Antonio). About 12 miles so says my phone!Leia mais

  • First 3 days

    13 de junho de 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

130 miles in and we are adjusting to life on the road. Many highs and many lows. Highs: temperature, smooth bike lanes and roads, beautiful scenery, hummus Sammie by the coast, kindness of strangers. Lows: ferry strike, pushing/riding in sand, no dinner, brakes not working on steep downhill. Lots of learning and figuring out our rhythm. Portugal is beautiful!Leia mais

  • The ups and downs of beach towns

    15 de junho de 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Tried to get an early start but it wasn’t meant to be. Go down only to be confronted with unrideable surface. Long push up. Followed by lovely pavement and then another down to go up. And why are we seeing zebras? Enough of that and on to the main road. Another down and up through small town but rewarded with a lovely windmill. Big down into a town for lunch. Skies are stormy and boomers all around. Duck into a bus stop as skies open up. A break in the weather and we are riding again. This time through forested terrain. Cruise along amongst wind turbines and down to sagres.Leia mais

  • Flexibility is key

    18 de junho de 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Hot and windy day spent navigating large towns. Though some good bike lanes still hard to get anywhere. Very built up area flush with golf courses. After a long day find the only campground closed. Find a lovely hostel. Communal living in COVID times 🫢Leia mais

  • A day through the marshes

    19 de junho de 2022, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Left the hostel and out of pretty beach town. Wound out way through yet another golf course. Found our first big EuroVelo signs. They would have helped quite a bit earlier. Stopped in another nice resort town and opted for a gelato lunch as market was closed. Found our way back to EuroVelo through a beautiful path amongst the marshes. Feeling great until we lost each other. Even with cell phones took a bit to find each other. Made it out of Tavira and to campground.Leia mais

  • How many ways can you travel in a day

    20 de junho de 2022, Espanha ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Strong wind all around us as we set off for Spain. Trying to make time by staying on main road which is not much fun. Get to Santo de Monte Gordo and are warned about a bridge being out. Make it to the ferry with a few minutes to spare. Short crossing to Spain! Through town and back on big road. Surrounded by orange groves and cacti. Stop for lunch and reconsider plan to ride to Sevilla. Opt to take a train for the last bit. Redirect towards Huelva after seeing a sign suggesting a shorter distance. Beautiful road and bike path lead to a closed bridge and no way to take the main one. A biker leads us to a place to maybe take a bus. Stop at bike store and are offered a ride in a van to the other side. This apparently happens often. Very thankful as retracing 12 miles doesn’t seem fun. Zoom to bus station and catch train. Zip to Sevilla. Check in to hostel. Tapas and churros dinner. The answer is 4!Leia mais

  • When plans go awry

    22 de junho de 2022, Espanha ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We had it all planned out. Catch the 9:15 train to Granada and then on to Almería. however, the high speed lines only take bikes bagged up. Where can we go on a slow train. Malaga here we come. Here’s to checking out the southern coast of Spain. Beautiful mountainous scenery passes by on the train. Arrive in Malaga and get blown all the way to Torre Del Mar! Beautiful coastline and good cycling.Leia mais

  • First days by the Med sea

    25 de junho de 2022, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

While we never intended to ride along this part of Spain’s coast, we have found it to be beautiful! The blue sea sea and sky have been incredible with great views around every turn. The riding has been challenging and enjoyable with just enough ups, downs, and hairpin curves to keep it interesting. The towns are smaller and quieter then in Portugal except for the all night festival right by our campground.Leia mais

  • Hacia mucho viento

    28 de junho de 2022, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Wind had changed direction as predicted and not in our favor. Strong wind in our face as we began a slow ascent across the peninsula. Travel through rather deserted deserts. Slow descent to Aqua Negra on the other side. Nice lunch on the beach before next big up. A beast of a climb. Hot and humid made for a tough ascent. Down is nice and gradual. Cruise through touristy towns to get to our campground. Rather late but manage an evening swim and dinner on the beach.Leia mais

  • An endurance test

    29 de junho de 2022, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Got a nice early start and stopped quickly for coffee , breakfast and pastries. Nice quiet road along the coast. Make good time to Aquila which takes awhile to navigate through. Beach lunch and swim before the 1275 foot climb that awaited us. First 200 meters were relatively easy and then it kicked up and up. Not even worth riding, push most of the way. Lovely views and then try to have a controlled descent. Decide to go via the coast eventhough there is an unpaved section. Stop for water and nice guy gives us two cold cokes. Save it for the dirt road. Which we hit rather quickly. 5 miles of beautiful scenery but torturous. Most unrideable. Almost 3 hours. Finally make it to Belonuevo. Exhausted. Pizza dinner. It is all about the contrasts. The hard work makes the wine taste so much better 😌Leia mais

  • Back to the Med

    3 de julho de 2022, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Early morning stroll to find pastries unique to Girona. Back up from our university dorm hostel and head out amongst many cyclists out for their Sunday ride (Girona is a big cyclist town). Lovely roads along the river and amongst small towns. A brief foray onto a path reminds us that we really should stick to roads. Lunch next to a medieval cathedral and looking up at a hilltop castle. Wind our way back to sea and ride a lovely path to campground. Seems to be a big windsurfing competition.Leia mais

  • Dali and onto France

    4 de julho de 2022, França ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

More nice roads to get to Figueres to see Dali’s ‘theater and museum’. A repeat for me but new to Doug. Get ourselves out of there rather late and the day had heated up. More country roads (opting for big climb to avoid paths). Lovely deserted road though tough climb in the heat. Mostly amongst olive trees and little else though nice field of sunflowers. Finally hit the top and after a very steep section have windy descent now through French vineyards. Hot but beautiful.Leia mais
