Avengers Booth

First up today; Square Enix's Avengers. Stef and I had been looking for this one since it's announcement a few years back, and as soon as we heard they were bringing a playable demo, we knew we just had to go! We got to play the game for a whopping 25 minutes, about 5 minutes per Avenger. Thor, Hulk and Captain America all play like a dream. There's nothing quite like picking up two goons, smashing them together, and then using them as a club to smash any other goons stood in your way as the Hulk. Iron Man takes some getting used to, and the same goes for Black Widow. They require aiming of sorts, which, with a controller, is not very straightforward. After the demo we got a really quick sneak peak of the visual and mechanical customization, as well as a few hints at the story (AIM!?) Just to top it all off, we got an Avengers lanyard that a girl who looks an awful lot like Ms. Marvel was wearing in one of the cutscenes. This booth was one not to be missed!Read more

Next up, we'd had a look at what goodies were to be had, and found a familiar name up on that list! A studio from Ghent, where a friend of mine did his internship. I was intrigued to see the game, and was happily surprised! I'd describe it as the equivalent of a point-and-click game of years past, but in VR! The wonderful art is what pulls it all together, and I'm interested to see the full game!Read more

Next up, food, the Merch Hall, and, well, exploring all the other halls! I'm going to use this space to give you a few quick tips if you're going to Gamescom. You're going to be in lines A LOT, so bring a camping chair. Seriously, you do not want to be standing for the entire day. Also, lines are long, so pick 2-3 games you want to see per day, you might be able to do more, but only count on 2-3. And finally, bring your friends, and make that waiting line into a party! Play Spyfall, Most Likely, Charades, Would You Rather... Just make the boring parts fun!Read more

Yikes. We decided to have a look at the spiritual successor to Until Dawn, a game that both Maarten and I liked quite a lot, but were sadly left rather disappointed... not by the game itself, but by the demo! The PCs lagged to no end, causing the story to be hard to follow, and making the Quick Time Events genuinely impossible. It didn't help that it was running on Playstations, the control scheme of which we weren't used to, and they'd probably been running on loop all day in a hot enclosed space.Read more

Exhausting Way Back

All right, and that's a wrap...or... Game Over... Whatever. You get the point. Our Gamescom visit was over, so next was... well... getting home. An incredible amount of people had to take the same trains, so we were squished in there like sardine! On top of that, our bus was delayed by 1 and a half hours, so we decided we might as well spend that time playing party games and getting a late evening snack at Burger King. By the time we got home, it was around 3am, so as you can see on the picture, I was *quite* exhausted.Read more
