We had a great flight from Montreal to Lisbon. Anthony's milestone passes afforded us the comfort of the Business Class Pods, though neither of us slept!!
We got as far as the customs lineup and Anthony realized he left his bike helmet on the plane😱Back he ran and luckily was able to get back on the plane to retrieve it. We got through customs and on to the Uber/Bolt pick up area and had a comfortable, albeit, long ride in a luxury Chinese brand electric car. We got stuck in an area of one-way, narrow and very steep streets with a backlog of vehicles. That was easily an hour of just sitting and slowly easing a few inches. We found our Airbnb in the Moorish area of Lisbon just off the city center. It is quaint and cozy. We had a quick power nap then walked to explore our area and locate our Hotel for the 9th-11th. As we walked we located the Santa Justa Lift. It connects the lower streets of Baixa with the higher and the site of an abandoned Convent, an invaluable part of Lisbon's public transport network. In 1882 its construction was approved. It was built from an age when wrought iron was not just a construction material but also an elegant art form. The exterior structure is decorated with neo-gothic arches and geometric patterns. We did not want to wait in line to pay to go up so we walked up the streets to the platform at the top to take photos of the city landscape and convent building. We had some great music by 2 musicians while we looked around. We walked back down to the center below and found the Portuguese Custard Cream tarts, a local Pastry and we enjoyed some Gelato. We easily found our way back, stopping for a few breakfast items to eat as we take in a tour to Sintra, Pena Palace and Regaleira tomorrow.Weiterlesen

Day tour to Sintra Stop 1: Regaleira

We had a great sleep and were up at 6:30 to get breakfast and Uber to the meeting spot for our tour day. We found our guide easily and we had two guides b/c one was training. We were a small group of 8. One of the couples was from Quebec City. We had a nice lunch of tapas with them and learned that they both work in Cancer Research🥰
Our tour centered in Sintra, the location of the Moorish Castle Sintra National Palace, Moorish Castle, Regaleira (inverted, initiation and inverted well) and Pena Palace.
On the way to Sintra, we saw the Aquaduct which survived the big earthquake b/c it was newly built.  It was used until 60's. A story shared was about a
serial killer who threw btwn 50-70  people over the aquaduct. The police thought these people committed suicide.
But police saw him commit the crime one day. He threw a person over the side of the aquaduct.  He was the last to be executed. They kept his head to study his brain. His head is in the Univ museum. The aquaduct is now a museum.
A castle is a fort to protect something
A palace is considered a house,  like a mansion
Sintra is the location where the Royal Family came to their summer Palace. This made it a popular place for people to travel to.
Sintra is Unesco World Heritage Site
9 gates in 1999 with Johnny Depp. The movie takes place inside Beister House in Sintra
Dante's Divine Comedy poem describes how one goes through hell, pergatory and paradise.
The inverted well reflects this and has 9 levels of hell. Each level representing a different sin.
There was a Secret Society of free masons. To belong one needed 3 things.
Luigi Manini, one of the well creators, wanted to be part of the society and needed 3 things to belong:
Proof of importance, $ and ritual (well). Antony, his partner, who was very brilliant creatively, had the $ (millions from gold, silver, coffee) which was why Luigi paired with him on this venture.
Their goal, together, was to build a perfect society
9 is close to perfection which is 10, but you can never reach it. Everything they did relates to the #9
9 levelsx15 steps = 135 (1+3+5=9)
27 m deep (2+7=9)
9 floors in well
3 tunnels exits
Steps on water at the end, to prove you could walk on water.
The free masons saw this well as a rebirth going through 9 months of birth then finish on the water and emerge reborn.
It starts with an entrance in the North on the dark side and emerges in the South or light side
There are many nautical symbols in the architecture because of the proximity to the sea ( port holes for windows, knotted rope, shells, fish, etc)
We walked the 45 minutes back to our Airbnb and on the way found a nice restaurant to eat and enjoy a drink.Weiterlesen

The ride and remaining walk up to this Palace was steep. The horses back in the day had their work cut out for them pulling carriages and supplies. The people who had to walk would have been in great shape. It is a beautiful Palace and the views were fantastic. We could see across to the Moorish Castle that we were looking up at from Sintra. The triton over the entrance to the Palace was sure interesting. Many of their animal portrayals on the outside of the building were quite funny. The lion looked like a monkey and the snakes were cartoonish, not daunting at all!! The colors on the Palace are not original and were done without permission of the government, a no no. There is some interesting history if you look up Pena Palace in Sintra.Weiterlesen

The tiles in both Lisbon and Sintra are beautiful. They are flat, but the Moorish tiles are raised with Muslim, Moroccan and Islamic influences. Many items (purses, wallets, postcards, hats, etc) are made with cork from cork trees. They remove the outer layer of cork near the bottom of the tree so they don't kill the tree and it regenerates the cork every 9 years.Weiterlesen

We finished our walking tour this morning and went back to our hotels to check in and meet Joanne for our afternoon food tour. Our tour guide Cecilia, was very knowledgeable and eager to share the History and cultural significance of Portugese food. Our stops supported local, small businesses, some of which have been around for many years. She said there are 3 religions in Portugal: sugar, pork and cod
Stop 1 at Confeitaria Ilacional was for espresso and pastry buns
Stop 2 at Solar Da Madalena was for marinated pork buns with piri piri oil and mustard
Stop 3 at Gin Jinha Sem Rival de Eduardio was a Porrugese drink called Gin Jinha which is cherries in liquor
Abilio - 50 years serving this cherry liquor in this location
A nossa = cheers
Stop 4 at Manteigaria Silva was the salted, cured Bacalhau cod and we tried a Portugese pork meat similar to proscuitto. It comes from black pigs who only eat acorns the last several wèeks before slaughter.
On the way to the next stop we saw the university students doing their celebratory walk through the streets dressed in their uniforms singing, cheering
Stop 5 was the Trobadores Taverna Medieval Restaurant.  Medieval Storytellers would frequent this incredibly old restaurant. We had a unique dinner trying a "fake" pork sausage originated by the Jewish people so they could make it look like they were Portugese and eating regular pork sausages. The sausages were made with white meat and bread. We also tried Baukhla cod with potatoes and another pork dish.
Stop 6 at caso Do Bacalhau Da Ribeira was for tins of Portugese sardines as a gift from our guide. 1853 canning was started in Portugal for sardines, octopus, cod, tuna.
Stop 7 at Manteigaria was for Portugese custard tarts
Our guide ended with:
Portugese are melancholy people who have lived through so much.
Salty sea,  how much of your salt are tears from Portugal

We started our morning packing up and moving from our Airbnb to our Hotel. We had a great coffee and Custard tart while waiting for Priya. Once she arrived we walked to the start of our tour. Rodrigo was our tour guide. We went to the most of the squares in the Chiado area, we saw the tram that goes from lower to upper Baixa. It is a very steep street. We visited a Moorish church, a church which supported the inquisition such as the execution of witches and Jewish or other people who would not convert to Christianity, as well as the church for which the Pastor supported all people of color. We saw the location of the execution of King Carlos and his first son, the location of the first newspaper and the park named after the inventor of newsprint. We saw the locations of Free Masons and the effects of the 1755 earthquake. We learned of the gold and silver streets with the Roman Galleries which were escape tunnels. The Jewish homes also had escape tunnels from under their homes and many buildings had these as well. Near the Santa Justa Lift (created by a classmate of the creator of the Eiffel Tower, thus why it has a similar style) was the abandoned Convent (now has a museum inside) there is a famous Portugese poet who wrote his poems from his balcony. Our tour guide sometimes plays him for special events because of his likeness to him!!Weiterlesen

We walked to meet our tour guide, Jose. We were the only 4 on this tour and we travelled in a newer electric van. Jose was a very nice man and his English was excellent. We drove just under 2 hours to Fatima so had time to chat with him and ask questions. This post will focus on Fatima, the location of the older Basilica de Nossa Senhora do Rossario de Fatima and the newer Basilica da Santisimma Trinidade. This is the site where thousands of people flock to each year to celebrate the dates of the apparition of the Lady of the Rosary on the 13th of each month from May to October. This is based on the the 3 children who were witness to her apparition and she told the children to be devout to God and to return each month on the 13th for 6 months. Now people will make the pilgrimage to visit the site. Many will light a candle for loved ones, others walk or crawl down a specific white strip on the concrete praying or setting/thinking of a specific intention. The old and new Basilicas were each impressive in their own way. They were preparing for the night procession on the 12th and the Celebration of the Apparition of the Lady of the Rosary on the 13th. The brother and sister who saw the apparition were buried in the Basilica on one side and the 3rd child, who lived to an adult and became a nun is also buried in the Basilica on the other side.Weiterlesen

We drove to Nazare, a beautiful city on the sea. Jose drove us to the viewpoint to overlook the city, see the lighthouse and to tell us about "the 100 foot wave" the site is known for. It is a surfers paradise because of the size of the waves they get. They break at the lighthouse and the big waves go to the right and the beach area stays calm. Jose shared that we may see some of the local women in their traditional garb which is wearing 7 skirts layered. They are just above knee length. Jose pointed out a lady so I asked.if I could take a picture so he suggested we go ask. She was adorable and game to show me her skirt layers ( white cotton base, crocheted layers and more colorful layers of cotton)and broke out I to a dance and song and then turned as she was dancing to get a few very fresh, amazing tasting cashew, almond and corn nuts from her stand and handed them to me to try. She promptly asked which size of box I wanted to purchase. A very smart woman!! Her products were so tasty so we all bought from her😁. We walked down to see the lighthouse and view of the city and beaches.

Tour Stop 2: Batalha Monastery

We could see the Monastery from a distance as we approached. This was the area where historically the Portugese army of 10,000 stopped the Spanish Army of 30,000 from getting to Lisbon to conquer that Capitol. It was impressive because based on numbers the Portugese did not think they could win the battle. The day after the battle began, the Spanish left thinking they could not win!! So the Portugese were very surprised when they could not see any Spanish and thus were victorious and held their control. The Monastery was built to commemorate the victorious battle over the Castilians and took many years. As the story goes, the architect, Mateus Fernandes built the majority of the Monastery but was losing his eyesight, so the King made the decision to replace him with another architect who finished the remaining chapel dome. The elder architect told the King he could do it, but to no avail. He was very hurt and living in the vicinity he had to listen to the continued building. The new architect completed the dome and as everyone was gathered for a mass, they all heard the crashing sounds of the chapel and dome collapsing! Several people went to the King to tell him that would not have happened if Mateus Fernando had been allowed to continue. The king approached Mateus and asked him to rebuild it. He was still hurt, but agreed to compete it. When he finished the rebuild, the King brought in
prisoners who had been sentenced to death to stand inside to be the test subjects!! If it collapsed they would die, but if it held, they would be given their freedom. Mateus himself said he would test his.own work and sat in the middle of the chapel under the dome for 3 days. He did not eat or drink and was very frail. The dome held and is still standing today. Mateus Fernandes died a few days after his test of the dome and is buried in the Monastery.
The architecture is Manueline, Gothic and Renaissance. It is a Unesco World Heritage sight and is truly incredible.Weiterlesen

We had an early start at 6:30 to catch the metro then our bus (2 hours) to Porto Covo and begin our 4 day trek. We are walking to Villa Nova de Milfontes today. Anthony and I had a stressful moment where our printed bus tickets did not scan. Luckily I had the receipt with our seat numbers, dates and they let us on. We arrived in Porto Covo, met our luggage transfer company and headed for a cafe to buy sandwiches for lunch and a quick coffee to start our day. We were all very excited and right away started to see some amazing views and scenery. We walked through ankle deep sand most of the day, with the exception of walking on the hard packed beach. We wore gators but over the day, the sand made its way through some of the mesh on my and Joanne's runners. Anthony and Priya did not have any b/c they had waterproof hikers. We had our amazing sandwich lunch at 10km. Highlights of our day included walking on the beaches, overlooking the nest of a momma bird feeding her young, watching some surfers catching waves, seeing other pilgrims like us walking along, the spectacular views and the flatter paths to the sides of the trail for easier walking through the sand and of course the conversation, photo ops and laughs of our day together. There was one man who I was passing and I said hello and he barely turned and grunted a strained hello!! He was a tired pilgrim to say the least. We were tired when we arrived after a 26 overall km day, 20km on the actual trail. Our hotel was very nice. After much needed showers we headed for dinner. On the way we bought beautiful and flavorful buns from a local couple to use for our sandwiches tomorrow. We found a nice restaurant in the main square with local Portugese options. We had a lively young man serving us. We enjoyed mojhitos and I had the Portugese cod made with shredded cod, onion and egg. It was very good. We watched a local woman sing and play guitar with young kids dancing and playing and people out enjoying the evening. We had a quick walk home as we were cold and checked out each other's rooms then some more stretching before bed.Weiterlesen

We started our Mother's Day with a great breakfast at our hotel and added some of the meats and cheeses to our buns we purchased yesterday and wrapped them for lunch today. We headed for the ferry boat that they recommend to take that cuts off approx. 4 km of what is described as boring road walking!! There are so many ferral cats, but the ladies take such good care of them, feeding them sardines and they even had a little bunk house for them. Today we are hiking from Villa de Nova Milfontes to Almograve. We had a hot day mostly walking the beach, the deep sand on the cliffs, and through narrow stretches of low trees and varied foliage. We enjoyed our lunch on the beach before climbing back up to the cliff top main trail. The buns were so delicious...complements to the local couple🥰 We were making good headway today and got to our hostel early afternoon. It was really nice, newer and so clean. We freshened up and went out to find dinner. Again we saw a lot of cats and on one of the streets someone built a very cute cat house with food underneath in dishes ( see in a future post). We decided to try the restaurant of a man who gave us his food flyer as we were walking into town. It was a great decision. It was Nepalese food and we shared a variety of amazing dishes. The young man serving us was so pleasant and friendly. His dad was the man who gave us the flyer. We made recommendations in Alltrails because it was so good, inexpensive and the family was so friendly. We had a mango ice cream and shared that and then on the walk back to the hostel we got another ice cream with chocolate😋. Once back Anthony and I chatted with Jacob, Natasha and Vlad in Nanaimo. After our call we went to the main area and we sat and played cards and drank a tea before bed. It was a good day.Weiterlesen

We loved our Hostel. It was so clean and new and we had a great sleep. We got ready and were treated to a breakfast of fruit, yoghurt, beautiful mini baguette buns that were so fresh, meat and cheese, coffee and juices. We have a long day ahead of us as we walk close to 24 km to Zambujeira. We headed away after a short conversation with the lady next door who has a very friendly black cat and had been meowing so loudly as it walked along the fences outside our window last night! We had to walk past the town treatment plant on the way out and Anthony's comment, "Smell ya later!!" was fitting. We had a nice beach walk right away then climbed back up to the cliff trail. We were on a road for a bit which had a few warm up exercise stations. We had more sand walking for about 10 km. We saw actual dunes today. The conditions were cloudy to start the day, so the colors were darker and the sand redder today. The rock outcroppings were spectacular. We continue to see the beautiful flowers and succulents along the trail. Today we had forested areas with a lot of pine trees or bamboo and other low lying shrubs and trees. We came to a cliff area with steep steps down to the beach below. Anthony videoed for us and took photos as we descended and while on the beach. Here we had a bit of a drizzle but it didn't last long. We went inland to the town of Cavaleiro and walked around to look for food options. There was only one restaurant open so we stopped and enjoyed a lunch of pork, salad and some of the bun from our breakfast and a kombucha to drink. We saw a lot of locals coming in to eat as well. The food was very good. Joanne and I ate Anthony's little Nutella packs as our dessert getting back on the trail. This portion of the trail we saw the large storks and their huge nests on the outcrops of rocks. Some had their babies in the nests ready for food. The next portion of the walk was on dirt roads. It was very hot from this point on. It was 19 but felt like in the high 20's. Then more roads through bamboo and foliage on either side so not much to see. We came upon another bay with a momma stork and babies and from their we had a descent to a quaint fishing village in a bay and then a hill climb. From here we had a straight road walk for at least 3 km or so into Zambujeira. It felt long with nothing to look at. We just wanted to get to our hotel.
Our Breathe In. Was amazing. Another really nice, clean place. We stretched, showered then walked around town to find a place to eat. Our food was delicious. Anthony had an octopus salad, I had the pork tenderloin with salad and fries, Joanne had the sole with veggies and potatoes and Priya had the quinoa salad. We all tried the Feta covered French fries out of curiosity!! They came just as I described🤭🤔 The presentation of our food was so nice. We had rain while we ate. It didn't last long. We all had a hot drink together with some chocolate back at the Inn. We are all pretty tired so an early night😴Weiterlesen

Today is our final day of walking the 4th and original part of the Fisherman's Way Trail. We got ourselves ready and walked to find a cafe for breakfast. On the way we passed a woman who is the street sweeper, cleaning along the side of the roadways with her broom and pan with her bucket on a roll cart. We had a huge omelet with salad and coffee. We walked to the start of the trail. Today we had an undulating trek with short steep ascents and longer descents. We were in sand and more dunes much of the day again. We had narrow paths through pine trees, through bamboo and shorter shrubs. The flowers and succulents have been along the entire trail all 4 days. Some of the paths were right on the cliffs edge and with the strong winds ( thankfully blowing into the bank side) made for interesting, very focussed moments. We came through some really muddy, wet sections as well today. Today at the start of the day we walked on the edge of a safari park where we saw some ostriches up close and in the distance some bison and zebras. The landscape along the ocean continues to present such beauty and different rock formations. We saw a few more storks, a beautiful arch in the rocks, agricultural land with greenhouses and crops, and fishing villages. We had a detour along dirt and paved roads to avoid an eroded area along the clifftop just before our lunch stop in a small town slightly inland.
Our lunch today was soup for me and tomatoes, goat cheese and bread for Anthony. Priya and Joanne had a beautiful seafood rice bowl with lobster, class and prawns. We got back on the trail with a hill climb right away on the steep cliffside and then lots more sand walking. The end of the day we came onto the Praia (beach) de Odeceixe and walked down a road to the river which we followed on a paved road for several km into the small town of Odeceixe. We walked across the bridge and into town, stopping at the only 2 shops in the town. We have a lovely hotel with very kind hosts. We showered, stretched then walked to find dinner. We came to another small town square with 4 restaurants. Unfortunately we picked the one with a very arrogant owner/waiter and he was short on help so Anthony and I got our food first and ate it then several more minutes later Priya and Joanne got theirs. 3 if us tried the octopus and Anthony had pizza. The nicest part of the evening was enjoying the homegrown verbena tea made by our host. We had a taster of Joanne's carrot cake she bought and a piece of Priyas chocolate. The tea was so good and just what I needed. I seem to have a cold that just came on when we arrived.Weiterlesen

Odeceixe to Lisbon

We are travelling from Odeceixe to Lisbon this morning via the Rede Bus. We enjoyed an amazing breakfast of scrambled eggs, ham & cheese, bread, fresh melon, homemade berry jam, orange juice and coffee. We said our goodbye's to our lovely Sol Mar hosts and walked.tothe bus stop. We had a 3 hour ride to Lisbon with one close call where our driver had to hit the brakes hard as he came down around a corner to a broken down car😬. Once in Lisbon we took the Metro then walked the rest of the way to our Airbnb to meet Andrew. We were in a spacious Airbnb with a washer so we did a bit of laundry. We had a snack of custard tarts before walking to meet the Windt's for our Lisbon City Highlights & History Tuk Tuk (electric)Tour. We had a chance to catch up and celebrate Tom and Priya's birthdays before heading out to tour the city.
Stops included:
Lisbon Cathedral-The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, is a Roman Catholic cathedral. The oldest church in the city, it is the seat of the Patriarchate of Lisbon.
Church of Saint Anthony ( Where St Anthony was born)
Viewpoint of Portas do Sol and Santa luzia- this area had the old painted tiles of Queen Maria, what the Commerce Square originally looked like as well as the battle scene of the Portuguese taking power over the Moors. We also saw the "courting seats" which were used historically to maintain a respectful distance from a suitor.
Castle district- this district takes you back to the middle ages with very narrow, winding and labyrinth-type streets. It resisted the earthquake of 1755.
Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (The highest viewpoint of the city). This location has a stone heart on the wall: the heart ❤️ of Lisbon. It also has the stone obelisk that historically, women would touch in hopes of getting pregnant.
Monastery of Saint Vincent-The Church and Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, meaning "Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls", is a 17th-century church and monastery. It is one of the most important monasteries and mannerist buildings in the country. The monastery also contains the royal pantheon of the Braganza monarchs of Portugal.
The National Pantheon took 285 years to complete from the 15th century to the 17th century. It was the first built outside the castle walls.
Flea market in Alfama which is the site of the longest graffiti wall in Lisbon
Alfama is the oldest and most characterful district in Lisbon. Historically is situated outside the castle walls and housed the poorest citizens. The monarchy inside the castle walls.looked down upon this district literally. Being a seafaring city, this area also housed sailors and dock workers. Now it is fashionable and trendy. Many of its restaurants have fados that are free). Fado is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal. We saw the original map of Alfama painted on Portugese tiles.
Commerce square ( One of the biggest squares in Europe) is the location of the original home of the zmo architecture and where the King and his son were murdered. It is now the new entrance to the city ( It was destroyed by the earthquake, tsunami and fires of 1755.
Pink Street - this was on Rua Nova do Carvalho and had multicolor umbrellas for a photo op. This used to be their Red Light District.
Time Out Market (Famous Food Market of Lisbon)
After the tour, our drivers dropped us off in Alfama to have dinner. We said our goodbyes to Priya here.
We found a restaurant with a free Fado and the Windts, Snows and us had a really nice meal and visit together. I tried the seabass and Anthony had veal and water chestnuts. The Fado singers and musicians were quite good.
We said our goodbye to the Windts and ubered back to our Airbnb.Weiterlesen

Lisbon to Porto by train

We woke early to get ready for our 3 1/2 hour train ride to Porto this morning. We walked out of our Airbnb to find Lou's Cafe open just below us. Lou is our Airbnb host. I had s rambled eggs, bacon and toast with a flat white coffee(thinking of you guys Jacob & Nikki)👌Anthony had French toast and Andrew and Joanne had yoghurt, granola and fruit bowls.
Lou said to contact him if we refer others as he can give better deals and has other Airbnb options. We ordered up our Uber who got us to Santa Appalonia Train Station in plenty of time to find our train and car. We had a smooth train ride and once in Porto ubered to our Boa Vista hotel. It is right on the ocean and the temperatures were much cooler here with winds and a bit of rain. We stored our bags until check in time and walked to find a pharmacy ( a bit of a stuffy nose settling in) and found the Amelia Restaurant. It had a picture of Amelia the dog. The story of the restaurants are based on Olivia and her dogs which you can read in the pictures.
It was a most excellent lunch of burgers with an amazing curry mayo and Nase Goreng and flat white coffees. We checked in and had some much- needed down time for a few hours. Anthony, Joanne & Andrew walked to the grocery store for meats, cheeses, bread, crackers, beet hummus, guacomole, carrots, tomatoes, chips &cherries for a charcuterie dinner. Joanne picked up some beautiful desserts. We shared the chocolate cake and fruit & custard pavlova. To end our evening we booked a 3 hour walking tour of Porto for the morning.Weiterlesen

Most beautiful McDonalds in the world in the former Majestic Cafe
This is where JKRowling wrote the first 2 Harry Potter books
Francescina( means little french woman) sandwich of porto.
A French man created it to see if Portugese women ( very conservative)would be more liberal like French women.
2 churches side by side, one 16th century and the other 17th century separated by a 1.50m house in the middle. This was to avoid taxes because 2 churches could not share the same wall
Sicamore trees in a park across from Justice Building
Lady justice in front of justice building is not typical during dictatorship of Salazar. This one basically represented:
"I see you, I don't care about justice and I might stab you first"...during dictatorship
Typically, Lady Justice is blindfolded b/c she is fair, doesn't care your background or who you were, her scales represent fairness and she is not stupid, has the sword just in case!
The park across the street has art installations which some say signify laughing at the Justice system???
JkRowling connections, wrote 2 books in Majestic Cafe which is now McDonalds.
Coincidences from her time living in Porto: Book store in Porto very similar to in her book and movies , griffin fountain, 2 churches joined by 1.50 m house, university students and cloaks, salazar character named after dictator
Mayor wanted a 4 km stretch like Champs Elysses in Paris. Church was in the way and said no to moving it, so they built a building in front of that church with the same shape and one tower so you can't see that church at all now. That building is now the City hall!!
St Clara Church - so beautiful
100 to 150 nuns in cloister separated from public by gates with spikes on it. The public had to be at least 20m away from the nuns for privacy.
Jacarinda wood used for the nuns chairs in the upper cloister is from Brazil. It is almost extinct so can be difficult to do restoration. They had an organ used to practice before doing actual masses.
Gold leaf throughout the church was from Brazil. It was a tax payment to gov't who then gave some to the church
They had images on their chairs to indicate which nun sat in each chair. Some images were made to remind the nuns how ugly the men were and as a reminder of their choice to become a nun. The images may have been requested by the nun because of an interest and images were chosen from medieval influence.
The nuns' chairs were designed so they could rest their arms on the arms of the chairs and place the edge of their butt on image on the chair to rest and their dress covered this do they still looked like they were standing.
The nuns would sing and the public thought it was the angels singing b/c they couldn't see the nuns above in the cloister.
After the tour we went for lunch and tried the local Francescina dish. It was very good. We then visited the St Clara Church and returned to pick up some of the pastes from the chocolate shop. We went into a few shops here and there, walked across the top then returned on the bottom of the Luis I Bridge. We walked to the bus stayion to get back to our hotel in time for our meeting to get our bikes and information for the start of our cycling trip on the Coastal Camino tomorrow. Afterwards we had another charcuterie dinner together before heading to our rooms to pack and prep for tomorrow. A great day today👌Weiterlesen

Day 1 Cycling Porto to Vila Do Conde
 18. Mai 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C
 18. Mai 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We are starting our cycling trip today. The description of our day is as follows:
DESCRIPTION
You'll follow the Douro River as you leavePorto, following the seafront to the former fishing village of Foz. You'll then pass a
lighthouse and couple of fortresses before reaching the town of Matosinhos, which
claims to have the "world's best fish". Pass the fish market, and Leixoes port and cruise terminal, to reach the municipal market
Alternate between cycle paths, tarmac roads and wooden boardwalks as you stay close to the Atlantic Ocean, passing
several beaches. There are some industrial sections, especially around the Petrogal plant near Matosinhos but these are soon counterbalanced by nature reserves and scenes of local fishermen at work. Continue
on to the attractive town of Vila do Conde. The ancient town, dating back to the year of
953, is famous for its Roman Aqueduct and the Santa Clara Monastery, and it was also
the main centre for Portuguese lace and has the Bobbin Lace Museum. It's also centered
around an ancient shipyard and is full of historical and architectural interest. The Camino greeting between pilgrims.s is Buen (Spain) or Bom (Portugese) Camino
We were given our paniers, bike locks, water bottles, hotel vouchers, our Camino shells to I dicaye we are pilgrims and our pilgrim passports to gather stamps from the hotels, restaurants and various stops last night at our meeting. We adjusted our bike seat heights a bit last night. This morning we got our luggage to reception for the pick up and transfer. We had a big breakfast again and made sandwiches and got some fruit for our lunches. We got ready to go and brought our panniers to the underground garage to place on the bikes. Unfortunately Andrew misplaced his lock key so one of the hotel employees cut his lock and he will get another tomorrow or next day. We Were ready to start and rain shower 1 began!!!
It subsided within 10 minutes and we had decided to ride out o to the breakwater in front of our hotel to start our ride with a photo and Porto in the distance. It was a cloudy day. We began our ride out of the city. My helmet microphone wasn't connecting but we later discovered that Anthony was pressing the wrong button so we got me back up and chatting through the helmet Bluetooth.
We followed the bike paths and in the city we had bike traffic lights where we had the green bike or red to stop at pedestrian crossings. We had a total of approximately 5 or 6 rain showers so we would get our hoods up under our helmets. We had a cafe and bathroom breaks, a ride over a draw bridge, a lunch stop at the beach, followed by a good rain shower, a little gift shop stop hosted by a woman and her husband who have walked the Camino and recognized a need for souvenirs and stamps and a WC stop for pilgrims. We bought a magnet and a Camino notebook and def. used the WC. We had stops to take jackets on and off, quick checks for route and ensuring we were going the right way. We have the Macs Adventure daily maps all set up to help us navigate our daily cycle right from hotel to hotel. It's great.
The unfortunate thing is that our bike seats are extremely hard and narrow. They are uncomfortable, especially on the many cobblestones roads😦😲 We are going to see if the company has gel seats because tomorrow we have a 50 km ride and we can't imagine how awfulness going to feel. We will be doubling up on cycle shorts or rigging jackets up to sit on because it's that hard!!
We saw the site of a plane that went down on the beach close to Vila do Conde, a few fun pirate and other vignettes in the photos. As we rode across the bridge I to the town of Vila do Conde we had a wedding g procession driving towards us with the bride and groom and everyone waving and honking their horns. The big building ahead of us was originally a convent, then became a prison and is now a hotel!! We got into the area of our hotel and locals were so friendly and helpful pointing us in the right direction even when we hadn't asked...they could see we were searching.
We got our bikes stored, got showered, stretched and went to walk and see the town. We came across a.matket and sampled the chocolate cup filled with a shot of Jin ginjah ( cherry liquor). We walked to the river and took some photos then walked to a restaurant that had great ratings and reviews for their tapas. We arrived and there was a 30th birthday party going g on, but the owner invited us in to sit in a different area. We tried a variety of tapas ( fresh vegetable salad, cod croquets, garlic shrimp, a fired chorizo sausage, and jalapeno-bacon croquet). It was all so delicious. The owners were a young couple that were just so friendly, helpful and they ended our evening by giving us a shot of their homemade liquor with honey. It was really strong!! We had her sign our Camino passports because she doesn't have her stamp yet. She asked us to sign their comment board which we were so happy to add our complimrnts to. We said our thank yous and goodbyesand walked back to our hotel. We have been so grateful for evenings out at restaurants with amazing food and welcoming , friendly owners.Weiterlesen

Today we cycle 50 km to Viana do Castelo.
DESCRIPTION:
Ride through residential areas and follow the coastline from Vila do Conde to the resort town of Povoa de Varzim. Then continue cycling alongside the ocean and beaches on a mixture of back roads, dirt
tracks and cycle paths for about 8km before heading inland along cobbled roads and dirt tracks between market gardens, small
patches of forest and a couple of villages before crossing the River Cávado to reach the low-key resort town of Esposende
There are a couple of hills to negotiate after Esposende but for the most part, any climbs are gentle. The approach to Viana
do Castelo across the iron bridge over the River Lima will provide magnificent views along the valley and estuary. Viana do Castelo is surrounded by unspoilt coastline and was once one of Portugal's
most important ports back in the 15th and 16th centuries, where Portuguese explorers would set off to discover far-flung lands
A wealthy city during the Portuguese explorations in the age of discoveries, it has many attractive historical buildings including a 16th century fountain and former council chambers, and a beautifully restored church. Its architecture consists of Celtic settlements, medieval monuments and award-winning contemporary buildings.
We enjoyed a hearty breakfast of our usual yoghurts, granola and fruit, meat and cheese, eggs, bacon, tomatoes and lattes. We made a sandwich for our lunch and got ready to head away. We were all reluctant to sit on our bike saddles, but away we went. We had some smooth sections of bike path to start the day. We saw a lot more pilgrims walking today all along the 50 km. We had a lot of Bom Camino greetings! Over the first half of the day it was flat with beautiful beaches all along, but we had cobblestones all day and especially the really rough ones in the latter half. I left my sunglasses behind at a WC stop😔After Esposende, we had some shorter hills and some very steep uphill climbs today. The descents were the best to rest our butts and get off the saddle. We had a cafe stop half way in an old village and had fun taking a few photos and Joanne found another cute old cat to photograph😍. We had a few key stops when our butts just couldn't take more cobblestones. Every town we stopped in was usually at or near a church. There were a lot of old stone walls that we passed alongside today. We had a few quick stops to turn back and get the correct navigation. Lots of trivky spots with quick turns easy to miss. Thankfully Macs Adventures provides a great navigation system. We also saw so many lemon and orange trees just filled with huge pieces of fruit. In Anha, some pilgrims shared a few lemons with us that a local woman gave them. We had a steep descent coming down to the Lima River which had a really long bridge we walked over to get I to the beautiful town of Viana do Castelo. We found our Airbnb and showered and stretched then went to another great restaurant called Taberna Cartinho de Viana where Joanne and I had the grilled seabream fish and the guys had pork ribs and belly. The waiter was very friendly and gave us lots of good local food information. We ended the meal by sharing their local traditional torte de Viana, a spongebsse cake coated in creamy egg yolk custard and marmalade filling. It looks like our jellyrolls.Weiterlesen

Today we are cycling another 50+ km from Viana do Castelo to Oia and our gel seats arrived - yaaay.
DESCRIPTION
Start the day towards the beachside town of Vila Praia de Ancora, cycling along the coast
to get there and avoiding the challenging climb where the official Camino route goes. Continue with a coastal cycle path
that connects you to Moledo, just before reaching the pretty town of Caminha at the mouth of the River Minho as you head more inland. There is a beautiful parish church
here, the clock tower and the decorative fountain in the charming square of Praca
Conselheiro Silva Torres. Here you have to take the scenic ferry and cross the River Minho, the natural border with Spain. Cycle
through the fishing town of A Guarda to follow the Camino along dirt tracks and tarmac roads to the village of Oia, where a 12th century monastery dominates this
small but attractive village. A small beach can also be found in front of this monastery.
We typically have the same breakfast each day and make a sandwich and take some fruit or yoghurt for lunch. We saw the couple who are following the same route as us with the same company and they are having trouble with the bike seats too and found yesterday very difficult.
We got ready to head out with our gel seats and the first sit felt much better🤗 Macs Adventure set our navigation for the Coastal Route so we apparently bypassed the mountain and looking at it, we were happy with that!! We had an absolutely gorgeous day on the coast. The weather was very warm today even with the ocean breeze. We saw a few round, stone structures right on the shore ( possibly decommissioned windmills?). We came across several Forts all from the same era, looking at their design and square shape. We passed the Praca Fort before stopping for coffee and a snack in Ancora, which also had a fort. Today we had such a fun mixture of paths. We were on smooth bike paths at the beginning and end of our ride today, we cycled on long sections of boardwalk, through some really nice forested paths, we had sections of cobblestone, but not as bad or as much as yesterday. We had one section of it today that we could not possibly ride up. The cobbles were massive. We had a section of zig zags through farmland with cobbles, then flat road. It reminded us of biking on the farmland towards Abbotsford. We had a beautiful ride right along the ocean on boardwalk which turned to deeper sand so had to walk our bikes through that and down some stairs. We had just a few small hills and a few sections we walkwd up because of the steep grade or ginormous cobbles. We had some really nice sections along old walls again, and lots of sections with old lower rock walls bordering properties. Many were breaking apart, but visible. We watched a man herd his sheep across the road, right near us. That was fun. We rode to the ferry which takes us into Spain, but it was broken down so the lady sent us about a km or so down the road to see Miguel and take his "fast" ride over. You can see by the photos that we were in for an adventure. Miguel was just fantastic and friendly. He had such an amazing personality and looked after us all, our bikes, and us "ladies" by giving us life jackets to sit on and also put on. He was constantly checking if we were okay. It was a very quick ride across to a beach. We got ourselves off the boat with Miguels helping hand. Though I tweaked my knee slightly which took me a bit to get warmed up again so it wasnt hurting while riding. Thankfully no worse. Miguel offloaded our bikes and we sat right there on the beach and enjoyed our lunch. We were off our route for navigation, so had to wind our way through the streets of Meledo then through A Guarda to get back on track. From here our ride was so beautiful along a nice gravel path past older homes and the old rock fences just off the ocean. We tried to stop for a beer in Oia, but we were a bit too late because the time here makes us an hour later yet. We are now 9 hours later than home. So our greeting to other pilgrims also changed once in Spain. We are now saying Buen Camino, not Bom Camino (Portugese). We saw lots of pilgrims walking again today.
We found our Hotel Glasgow right on the ocean with a beautiful pool( too cold to go in, unfortunately). We showered then I sat in the sun, did some stretching and journaled. Today was my favorite ride of our 3 so far with the landscape variety, gel seat and fewer cobbles!! We had a nice "Pilgrims" dinner option tonight. We had wine, sparkling water, Hake fish, pork, Russian salad ( similar to potato salad) and squid that was the best we have all tasted. We are all so tired today.Weiterlesen

Day 4 Cycling Coastal Camino Oia to Vigo

Today we ride 40+ km from Oia to Vigo. We had rainshowers during breakfast and were treated to some local fisherman out on the rocks fishing for mussels according to our host. One of them fell in then they get right back up on the rocks. Tough work.
DESCRIPTION
Your journey continues along the coast, cycling past small fields and villages before reaching the pretty resort town of Baiona following the coastal road to its marina. We are following an alternative route to the official Camino from Baiona to Vigo here, which is closer to the coast. The official Camino involves several complicated
forest sections which we don't recommend for bikes. The historical centre of Baiona
is worth exploring, with many medieval buildings and several religious monuments. The view towards the ocean is dominated by the Monterreal Fortress, and you can also go onboard a replica of La Pinta Caravel, one of the ships used by Christopher Columbus. As you leave Baiona behind, you'll continue to follow the coast to the city of Vigo.
We took our starting group photo after our hearty breakfast and headed out. We got right back onto the bike path by our hotel then followed the trail through some of the village and kept either on the bike path or little detours here and there past horses and houses but staying along the coast. We came across one of the largest stone piles from various locals and pilgrims and had fun looking at the painted rocks. In one part of the mountain we saw the old cannons fortifications built into the rock. It was a really rocky shoreline until we got to Baiona which had beautiful sand beaches. Coming into Baiona, we had a nice descent into the town. There was a large statue overlooking the town and the Monterreal fortress. This is definitely a fishing and tourist town based on the seafarer statues and symbols and the beautiful beaches. We stopped for a coffee and pharmacy break, then got going out of town. We came across a really nice red and white tiled area, waved to a school group on a field trip and made our way to a beach to eat our lunch. We stopped at Praia (beach) America. A lovely man stopped and asked if he could take a photo for us. After, Joanne discovered he took a selfie photo of himself as well🤣🤣We had a very friendly dog stop and hang about because he could smell our food. His owner came over and we tried a bit of a conversation then eventually he got his dog to go!! We enjoyed the beautiful scenery while eating. We had a couple of steep hills and meandered until we got to a nice gravel path along a little river. With 7km to go we had an older man who heard our bike bell but panicked and didn't know which way to go to get out of our path. I braked and the gravel grabbed my tire and down I went. My knee and hands took the brunt. I had to sit for a moment and get cleaned up with bandaids on my one hand but just left my knee until I could clean it up at the hotel. Just another part of the adventure😬🤭
We found the last 4 km the worst trying to navigate up hills, along busy roads, through forested paths in parks, up steep hills and just when we thought we arrived our own gps said we were still 10 min. away. This is the part of their navigation app that needs work. This happened 2 days in a row, where we still had km to go to get to the actual hotel even though it shows we have arrived🤪😝 I cleaned up my scrapes and Anthony got some ice for my knee and then he and Joanne ran out to check on some changes to our train ticket from Santiago de Compostella back to Porto. A really great ride today with fantastic scenery. An okay meal in the hotel, then more icing and off to bed. We done a total of 178 km in 3 hrs 42 min.Weiterlesen
