  • Tonight’s Stay - Albergue Verde

    29 avril 2023, Espagne ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

My favorite albergue so far ! The hosts were so kind and welcoming ! We were given REAL, freshly washed sheets and a blanket upon arrival, which is a rarity. There’s a beautiful outdoor space with hammocks, picnic tables, friendly dogs, a greenhouse, and yoga studios ! We were offered a yoga class, dinner, and breakfast all in exchange for an anonymous donation/whatever we had (I’ve met a few pilgrims who are surviving on donations).En savoir plus

  • in Astorga

    30 avril 2023, Espagne ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Last night, I met people who I really enjoyed talking to. This morning I asked one of my fellow pilgrims, Daina, from Germany/Lithuania if they wanted to walk together to Astorga. I soon learned Daina and I have very different Camino styles - we were on the road at around 9:45 😅😅 I had been accustomed to starting my walk a solid 3 hours earlier, before the sun was up. I met whole groups of people today that I had not yet interacted w yet solely because they all prefer to leave much later. Anyway, the walk today was gorgeous, but I didn’t take many pics because I was busy talking/listening.

Astorga is very cool! There is a cheese festival here right now. My friend and I ate so much cheese we’re not feeling too well great right now tho 😂

I was able to have the early start I’ve grown to love this morning. Today was a self-reflection day after a couple of days of walking with people. It was 16 miles with about 650m (2115ft) climb. Staying in an albergue I had heard positive reviews about tonight so I’m excited 😁😁En savoir plus

  • 21 miles to Trabadelo

    3 mai 2023, Espagne ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Today I felt really good :) I had originally planned to just go to Villafranca but once there, I felt I could keep going. Especially after I found an albergue called Casa Susi that is run by people who are friends of Albergue Verde (the yoga albergue I really loved). I walked about 5 miles to the next town, Trabadelo, and I am now settling in. The albergue is beautiful so far and after this post I’m going to dip my feet in the river to rejuvenate them for tomorrow!En savoir plus

  • best pilgrim dinner 🥰🥰

    3 mai 2023, Espagne ⋅ 🌧 61 °F

just now, I had the yummiest pilgrim dinner thus far with some amazing people ! one other American, 2 Spanish men, a Australian woman, a German man, a Danish woman, a Scottish man, and a Singaporean man. It began raining nearly as soon as I had just gotten settled in around 3:30 or so, so the Singaporean man, the Scottish man, and the Danish woman all retreated inside to the main area. We sat there talking until dinner was served until 8! Dinner was just as lively. Anyway, we are still talking so I don’t want to write more, I just wanted to document this amazing night :)En savoir plus

  • climb to O Cebreiro and on

    4 mai 2023, Espagne ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Today I walked 21 miles and climbed about 700m total. It felt so good to finally have some climbing to do after the flat mesetas. When I arrived to the top of O Cebreiro (where many stay for the night after the climb), I was resting, having a drink, and 5 separate people offered to buy me a drink because they were so impressed by how fast I walked up the climb😂. If only they knew the climbs the Sierra Nevada has. After that ego boost and since it was only 11:30 when I arrived to the top, I decided to push on about 7.5mi to the next town with an adequate stay, Fonfria (where I write this). For the next two hours, it rained hard and pilgrims were few and far between since many chose not to walk in the rain. It was nice.En savoir plus

  • Boente… right past Melide

    7 mai 2023, Espagne ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

I had a pretty good day today! I’ve been listening to an audiobook lately and I finished it today. There was no rain but cool fog for most of the day, until later when the heat wave started creeping back in 😅 There’s been a ton SDNPPs (short distance no pack pilgrims - a term I learned from a seasoned French pilgrim). A lot of people just start from the minimum distance needed to earn a credential (100km) and then don’t carry their packs. So it’s not as tranquil anymore. Today, we reached Melide, the city where most stop and I had Galician octopus, which was really yummy. I wanted to continue on though to separate myself from the crowd and walked the next 3 miles to the next town with a bed with a Bulgarian woman who I’ve been traveling with for the past 4/5 days! The town im staying in today is at the 47km mark!En savoir plus

  • O Pedrouzo

    8 mai 2023, Espagne ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

Second to last day of walking! I’ve reached the 19km mark and I’m saving those for tomorrow. Hasn’t been as nice lately because the trails are SUPER crowded with SDNPPs. I’m excited to finish tomorrow and have my last albergue night tonight.

Also I couldn’t take a lot of pictures because my phone wasn’t working for the majority of the day.

  • took a train to Madrid today!

    9 mai 2023, Espagne ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

I took a train from Santiago to Madrid today, which was painless. Madrid feels so safe and familiar to me now, but still I am excited to go home. I finally got around to watching some of the medical school orientation videos I was supposed to watch about a month and a half ago. It’s getting more and more real that this time on my trip, and on my life, is coming to a bittersweet close.En savoir plus
