  • Resting During Concert Block 2

    May 21, 2023 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

So after last night I was so exhausted. I needed to go to bed early and just have some me time. I was so cranky and I can't explain how exhausted I really was. I decided I wanted to go to the pool, but it was full of children, so I decided to go back upstairs and watch some TV.

I called liezl and talked with her a bunch, and went to sleep at a decent hour.

All last night I was restless, not sure why. My sleep wasn't restorative, so I felt pretty crummy. I did have some coffee, and it helped wake me up quite a bit, which I was glad for.

So now, I'm back in the hotel taking a break so I can handle our concert performance, (after all, that is a big reason we are here,)

Tonight is the banquet, and I have a friend coming so, it will be exciting to share it with her.

I've learned this little while that it's important for me to go off alone on my own to rest so I'm able to have fun and enjoy the moments I do participate in. After all, if I feel miserable, I won't enjoy the moment and activities I'm involved in.

    🎶So here's to the ones that we've got. 🎶

    The Banquet Starts

    May 21, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

The banquet meal was a bit of a letdown, however the entertainment was pretty amazing! There was a drag queen emceeing the whole thing, and there were two circus ladies doing their thing on a hoop hanging from the ceiling. (I've included pictures!!)

I forgot to take pictures of myself at the banquet with my choristers, however I did get my picture taken with Cass at the reception! (Picture also included)

Cass identifies as non-binary. On Instagram she describes herself this way: " metalhead meets choir nerd/ artistic director/ queer AF/ imperfectionist/ fervent dad joke enthusiast.

The Sopranos of the Rainbow Chorus also had a great time pretending to be the pre-banquet performance!

As I've mentioned on a previous page, I was part of a Soprano/Alto choir and we sang 4 songs in total. The next few pages will be the lyrics of that song, and a description of what went through my head as we sang the songs.

  • WHERE THE LIGHT BEGINS

    May 22, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

I don't have much to say about this song, except that it was beautiful.

    Perhaps it does not begin
    Perhaps it is always
    Perhaps it takes a lifetime
To open our eyes To learn to see
What has forever Shimmered in front of us
The luminous line of the map in the dark
The vigil flame in the house of the heart
    The love to searing
    We cannot keep from singing
From crying out in testimony and praise
Perhaps this day will be a mountain
    Over which the dawn breaks
Perhaps we turn our face towards it
    Towards what has been always
Perhaps our eyes will finally open
    In ancient recognition, willingly dazzled
    Illuminated at last.
Perhaps this day the light begins in us

  • CROWDED TABLE

    May 22, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

This song speaks to me so much. It talks about friendship, and having people around who care and support. And that we all need love. (And for me, there's a lot more to love than just being kind. But that's a whole other story.)

You can hold my hand when you need to let go
    When you're feeling valley low,
I can be a street light showing you the way home
If you hold my hand when you need to let go.
I want a house with a crowded table
And a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we're young and able
And bring us back together when the day is done
If it's love that we give, then it's love that we reap
If we want a garden we're gonna have to sow the seeds
Ya, I want a house with a crowded table and a place by the fire for everyone
Let us take on the world while we're young and able
And being us back together when the day is done
The door is always open, your picture on my wall
Everyone's a little broken and everyone belongs
    Yeah, everyone belongs

  • HUSHED INJUSTICES

    May 22, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

This song breaks my heart. It's about the LGBT purge that happened from the 1950s-1990s. This purge was a very shameful period where people of the Canadian armed forces, RCMP and the federal public services were discriminated against, harassed and often fired. It was devastating to thousands of people and lives were distroyed. People lost their dignity, their careers and their dreams. The trauma they endured was universal to those that were purged.

This song was commissioned by the LGBT purge fund. It's a story of a person's experience going through this horrible situation.

I always knew I was different
Not at all like the kids from my town
I was young, alone and apart
I was waiting for something to start
Always up for adventure, up for mischief or up in a tree
Singing, Canada, Canada I wanna stand on guard for thee
    O Canada Mon beau pays!
But I felt so alone, lacking crew and lost at sea
No one I knew was like me
    I tried to fit in.
Coping and hoping my life would begin some day soon.
    And then one sunny afternoon
There's no life like it, no there's no life like it.
I joined up on a Tuesday
    Mardi, jeu do, j'oublie
    Pas pour moi, pour ma
    Basic training started in Quebec
    Saint Jean Sur Richelieu
I loved the challenge the change and the cheque
    I remember belonging
    Et d'autres comme moi
And the moment I became we
We were singing, o Canada we're gonna stand on guard for thee.
For the true north strong and free.
Though I could do what a soldier does
Nobody knew who I really was.
Never confiding, to nervous to be caught
Cleverly hiding, deciding to just play my part
Until the day I lost my heart
"Our investigation has determined that you are homosexual"
"We've been following you, tapping your phone"
    "We've searched your apartment"
    "Who do you sleep with?"
***Not advantageously employable due to homosexuality***
What do I say to my family?
Walked away from family and friends.
    Dedication to service became, finally
Thirty years of dishonor and shame,
    I kept Canada's secret
Till somebody, then two and then three started singing, Canada, o Canada, we cannot stand on guard for thee.
    Not without an apology
To her, to him, and to them and to me and no, we're not alone
We take a stand, we've made a choice,
To strike up the band and raise our voices.
Knowing we'll never go back to before
We will be forever sharing our stories out loud
Yes everyone can be strong and free and proud
Love is love is love is love
    And we're proud

  • WHEN I RISE UP

    May 22, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This is such a beautiful song, a mantra really. We sang it in a 3 part round. When we sang it, it was beautiful. The sound resonated through the building despite the building absorbing the sound frequencies.

    When I rise up
Let me rise up joyfully like a bird
    When I fall
Let me fall without regret like a leaf

  • Closing Ceremony of Unison 2023

    May 22, 2023 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

The closing ceremony was quite alarming as the building's alarm system went off and stayed on for about 15 minutes.

I was part of SSAA (soprano & alto) We sang some pretty amazing songs, When I Rise Up, Crowded Table, Where the Light Begins and Hushed Injustices. (I'll include the lyrics of these songs later)

In the past I'd be sad at the closing of anything as change is hard for me, however, I was very content to just be in the moment. We sat near the back in our specific rows.

I should explain a bit more about the festival choirs!! When we registered for Unison, we had the option to sign up to join a choir that was mixed with all the other choir members who wished to join.

I joined the SSAA choir. (Soprano & also). I wasn't able to practice the music as much as I would've liked. I actually didn't practice it at all before arriving at Unison!

The songs weren't hard to learn, which was really nice! We had two two hour practices, and I had a few other Rainbow Chorus choir members singing with me. Jasmine, Leah and Anna. (Anna sang soprano, while the rest of us sang alto.)

I'm forgetting our director's name, however, I do remember how friendly she was, and her very distinctive smile. She was a very gentle soul, and very easy to work with.

I will be including the lyrics of the songs, as they are pretty and very deep. There wasn't a photo of the SSAA group, so I included a tenor/bass photo)
