• North Yorkshire Moors National Park

    Moors are shrubby hillsides with acidic peaty soil. This national park includes the largest unbroken expanse of heather in England. The cliffs and fishing villages overlooking the North Sea are a part of the National Park too.

    We were glad to be able to see heather in beautiful purple bloom. The heather is maintained by sheep grazing and controlled burning, to keep the plants young, maintaining the correct habitat for grouse and other birds.

    The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is still in use for scenic rides from the coast into the moors. It stops at Goathland Station, the filming location for Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter movie.
