• Southwell Workhouse, Evolution

    An infirmary was built in 1871 to separate the care of the infirm from the workhouse.

    In the 1920s workhouses ceased to exist. This one became Greet House (named for the River Greet that flows nearby). The rooms were changed to one-room bedsits (apartments), emergency shelters for families in the 1950s-1980s. One of the bedsits has been recreated as it looked in 1977 when it was last used. Other rooms are shown in their derelict state to tell the full story of the building's history.Read more
