    King James V built this palace for his new Queen, Mary, in 1540. The outside was decorated with over 250 carvings and statues. Research shows the palace was pink and the statues were in color! Much of the palace has been restored, including the making of seven tapestries for the important rooms.

    The King died young and his wife continued to live here. Their daughter, Mary, was crowned Queen of Scots as an infant, in the chapel at the castle.
