    This is one of Scotland's most important castles, both architecturally and historically. There has been a castle here since at least 1110, but most existing buildings date from 1490-1600. It has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times, two of which were turning points in Scottish history. It is a symbol of Scottish Independence and national pride.

    Much of the castle was changed during its use by the military from 1800-1964 as a barracks and recruiting depot for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
