Antarctica - the 7th continent III 🇦🇶

Day 3 took us to Deception Island – home to an active volcano! The last eruption was back in the 70s, and researchers think it might erupt again soon. But hey, they’re still piecing together historical data to get a clearer picture, so no need to panic just yet. (Comforting, right?)

The island’s black sand beach was absolutely buzzing: whales, penguins, and a few seals soaking up the sun like they were on an Antarctic holiday. Honestly, we were a bit jealous. But hey, who’s complaining? 🙃

In the afternoon, we headed to Emerald Bay – and wow, the bay totally lived up to its name. From a distance, it looked like something out of a fantasy novel: the entire area was shrouded in clouds, except for the bay itself, glowing in sunlight like a scene straight out of a dream. Our captain was positively beaming, too – in his 20 years of Antarctic sailing, this was only the second time he’d been able to navigate so far into the bay thanks to perfect conditions.

And as if that wasn’t magical enough, Antarctica decided to give us the ultimate farewell gift: sunshine, a dusting of snow, and a rainbow arcing over the bay. Total goosebumps.

Fun fact for the nerds: Antarctica is the highest continent in the world. Beneath all that snow is a rugged mountain landscape with over 130 volcanoes. And on average, the surface of Antarctica sits 2,200 meters above sea level. 🤓

Tag 3 führte uns zur Deception Island – einer Insel mit einem aktiven Vulkan! Der letzte Ausbruch war in den 70ern und die Forscher gehen davon aus, dass er bald wieder ausbricht. Jedoch fehlen da noch einige historische Daten um genauere Aussagen treffen zu können. War auf jeden Fall sehr beruhigend. 🫠

Am schwarzen Strand der Insel gab’s dafür jede Menge Action: Wale, Pinguine und ein paar Seerobben, die so entspannt in der Sonne lagen, dass wir kurz neidisch wurden. Meckern auf hohem Niveau, ich weiß. 🙃

Nachmittags ging es weiter zur Emerald Bay – und die Bucht machte ihrem Namen alle Ehre. Von weitem sah alles richtig mystisch aus, denn die Umgebung war komplett in Wolken gehüllt, während die Bucht selbst in der Sonne leuchtete. Unser Captain hatte Grund zum Strahlen, denn in seinen 20 Jahren Antarktis-Erfahrung war das erst das zweite Mal, dass er so tief in die Bucht reinfahren konnte – die Bedingungen waren ideal.

Und als wäre das nicht schon beeindruckend genug, lieferte die Antarktis noch ein Finale der Extraklasse: Sonnenschein, ein bisschen Schnee und ein Regenbogen, der über der Bucht schwebte. Ganz ehrlich, Gänsehaut pur. Fazit: Einfach Traum!

Klugscheißer fun fact: die Antarktis ist der höchste Kontinent der Welt. Unter dem Schnee verbirgt sich eine hohe Berglandschaft mit über 130 Vulkanen. Im Durchschnitt liegt die Oberfläche Antarktikas 2,200 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. 🤓Lue lisää
