    The Mount - Charles Darwin’s birth place

    On my way to Yorkshire I stopped by The Mount in Shrewsbury to have a look at Charles Darwin’s birth place. When I got there I found out that it was privately owned and used for offices. There was a plaque on the outside wall so as I was getting out to take a photo this man came out very purposefully. I thought I was in for a telling off but it turned out he was I think the house museum project manager John Hughes. He told me there was no formal tours or entry. When I told him I had studied Charles Darwin he offered to take me around. 2 1/2hrs later I had been through the house, grounds, got all the inside info, and seen photographs that had only recently this year been found. I was stoked to say the least.Weiterlesen

    The Railway Children walk

    Today my walk was along the Railway Children’s Walk. A 12km walk that passed through the filming location of the movie / TV series The Railway Children. It was a fantastic walk through typical Yorkshire countryside. Along the Worth river valley, through farms, and along country lanes. I could hear the sound of the steam train whistle every now and again while I was walking. I was really lucky as it threatened to rain but never really did.Weiterlesen

    Top Withins aka Wuthering Heights

    Today was an excellent day for walking sunny and not too windy until I got up to Top Withins. Unlike yesterday the trail was full of people. The signs are even in Japanese as they have a lot of Japanese followers coming to visit the Bronte house, museum, and Wuthering Heights. The Japanese are fanatical and are very knowledgeable, Un like some American women I overheard in the Brontë store trying to decide who wrote what book ( it was written on the book covers … doh) and then admitted to each other they hadn’t read any of their books. 😱
    An awesome walk with stunning views of the moors and valleys. I sat quietly for a while at Top Withins and tried to imagine what it was like in the Brontes times. I passed a landslide on the way down and apparently the Brontë sisters were out there in bad weather when the landslide occurred.    Weiterlesen

    Steam to Keighley

    On a stormy day what else do you do but take a steam train to Cliffe castle in Keighley (pronounced keithley)
    The place was full of stuff. Including a wife calmer - see photo. Rocks, taxidermied animals, and furniture. what an interesting place and even better free to get in and see.Weiterlesen

    Worth way

    A 17km loop around the Worth valley and over the moors. Not many photos due to the rain and also how many photos of moorland and farms does one want to see. I spare you the torture. Navigating was difficult at times due to farmers locking gates, mud, putting young inquisitive steers in the paddock I had to walk through, nettles and blackberry up to my arm pits (my legs are still tingling despite long pants). On the whole an interesting and satisfying days walking.Weiterlesen

    Hardcastle crag Hebden Bridge

    A walk up to Hardcastle crag today in the rain. It is the home of the northern hairy wood ant. Worker ants can reach sizes of up to 9 mm long; queens are larger, reaching 12 mm. I didn’t see any it was too wet and I think they were all washed away in the rain.
    No photos as I didn’t want to get my phone wet but I did get a video of the lock gate being used at Hebden Bridge.    Weiterlesen

    Leeds canal and train to York

    I dreaded the walk through Leeds after dropping off the rental car and getting to the train station. Maps had me walking along busy industrial roads but the nice rental car man told me how to get to the canal. My walk ended up a nice 5km walk along the Leeds canal and past the Hunslet colliery where some of my ancestors worked at the turn of last century. In the photo were the rubble is their houses stood.
    Then a very pleasant train ride to York. I do enjoy train travel.    Weiterlesen

    Busy York

    A quick visit to York and Wow I was shocked to see how crowded it was.
    What does one do when in the chocolate capital of England …. Yes make chocolates. Yummy
    Then it was on to the museum and saw Dick Turpins prison cell and a musical instrument I have yet to try. I’m not sure Jim will let me practice it at home.Weiterlesen

    Full Circle

    I have gone full circle and arrived back in London ready for my journey home.
    I went to the Royal Albert Hall last night hoping to catch a concert but nothing was on. It wasn’t even open to have a tour. It was also too late in the afternoon to visit any of the museums as by the time I would have got to the front of the entry queue it would be closing time. I had to settle for a walk in Hyde park in near storm conditions.
    It has been a fabulous month and thank you for coming along on my unpredictable journey. Stay tuned for my next adventure.    Weiterlesen

    Home soil

    Home after an arduous 33 hr journey. Only 3 more hours to wait for my jet ride up to Kerikeri in a Bombardier Q300.
    I Must go and plan my next adventure.
