  • Cu Chi tunnels

    25 november 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Hamish hurt his leg last night so I went by myself to the tunnels, they were a 2hr drive, we stopped at a government funded
art shop that employs people who were deformed at birth by the agent orange (toxic herbicide) use during the war, saw some really cool paintings. When we got there there was traps and tunnels then I shot an AK47, ate some tapioca (like potato), staple of wartime diet for Vietnam cong.
At night we flew to Da Nang, so far it’s very chill and rainy.

  • Ba Na hills

    27 november 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Ba Na is a quite nice tourist trap, it is famous for the golden bridge held up by the 2 massive hands featured in 1st and 2nd photos. Obviously it was a bit cloudy. The rest of it is kinda like Disney land with games and some rides. Most fancy place we have gone.Läs mer

  • Hoi An

    29 november 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

After battling food poison yesterday, we managed to get out for a cooking class, boat tour crab fishing and exploring the night markets in the evening. Hoi An is a small town south of Da Nang city and somewhere we’ve chosen to spend a couple more days in to chill out and enjoy the good vibe. Famous for its tailoring, max has got a fresh suit and we be both got shoes tailored to pick up on Sunday before we leave and drive to Hue. Vietnamese coffee making lesson to come tomorrow.Läs mer

  • Coffee Making Class

    30 november 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Quick coffee making class this morning learning about the Vietnamese way of brewing and drinking. Culturally brought by the french in 18th century, it’s now an important feature of Vietnamese culture and apparently the biggest exporter of coffee in the world.

The Vietnamese spend sometimes 2hrs to drink their coffee and socialise early in the morning before beginning their day. We made coconut, salted, condensed milk and egg coffees. Definitely different styles and lot sweeter than I would opt for normally although salted coffee is great and I will be trying back home (even got some traditional brewing equipment to take home). Good fun all round with interesting aprons. P.S. happy St Andrews day🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

  • Hai Van Pass to Hue

    1 december 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Arrived in Hue yesterday by motorbike, it took us about 6.5 hours from Hoi An where we rode past the beach in Da Nang city, before reaching the Hai Van passes winding roads up the mountain giving us a great view of the beach and city. We then passed the planes in some rural areas, taking in the landscape and seeing how the locals lived there. Eventually we arrived in Hue, experiencing the city traffic and driving which looks like chaos compared to the UK, although was not so bad to drive in max and I thought (you basically do whatever you want and everyone else has to react).

Dropped off the bikes no problem and we were heading for something to eat, when a group of Vietnamese school children asked us to have some pizza with them at a nearby restaurant, a challenge set by their teacher to find foreigners in the area to try help them become more confident with their English. We met the teachers when we arrived and sat and spoke to the kids for an hour and enjoyed the free pizza. The children and teachers were very nice and thanked us for joining them as they had found it difficult to find people, something max and me were happy to do telling them about some of our Scottish culture. Exploring the Imperial city today followed by touring the wider area tomorrow.

  • Paradise cave

    4 december 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Paradise cave is a 50 million year old cave in Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park which itself holds 3 of the 4 largest caves worldwide although these are not open to tourists. The caves were also described as very similar with the limestone formation in the area, which was underwater 400-600 million years ago and is formed from the marine life that was once there. The largest is Dong Son Doong and is by far the largest worldwide and costs around £3000 for the trip to enter.

The maximum height and width within paradise is about 72 and 150 metres respectively. The stalagmites were very cool and have formed over millions of years producing colours from the different elements and their own unique shapes. It is also the largest dry cave in Asia (No river inside).

  • Dark cave

    4 december 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

The bus tour continued from paradise to dark cave, we had lunch and then zip lined to the cave (those of us who were below the weight limit), hamish kayaked. When we got here it was unsurprisingly dark and we used our head torches to walk and swim to a small passage at the back that led to the mud pit, said to be very good for the skin, we had a mud fight with some Czech guys we met. Then came back out to the small water park with inflatable obstacle courses and zip lines into the water. Good fun. Nice cave.Läs mer

  • Duck stop and scoot

    5 december 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Rented scooters for the day and stopped off at a duck farm to see and feed the ducks there. Random but quite funny lol.

We then continued our journey into the mountains, where we drove for several hours in the late afternoon taking in the views. Such a fun experience, definitely will not forget doing that any time soon.Läs mer

  • Hanoi

    9 december 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Arrived in Hanoi a couple of days, hostel is pretty nice with a rooftop bar on the 11th floor looking over the city. Max went to the mausoleum with his new friend and saw the preserved body of Ho Chi Minh. Max comments “a hero to the nation and namesake for the city in the south”. I went to see train street and the longest ceramic mosaic in the world (not that interesting to be honest, just very long). Rejoined today to go to Hoa Lo prison seeing how prisoners were dealt with their during French colonialism and PoW camp during the American war. They claimed to have treated the Americans very well (definitely didn’t).

Plenty of places to eat and drink in the old quarter where we are staying, just need to watch out for the mopeds that fly by. Ha Giang loop booked for tomorrow - main activity in Vietnam.

  • Ha Giang loop

    12–15 dec. 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This has been the most recommended activity since we came to Asia, I understand why now. We drove for 4 days and 3 nights around the Ha Giang province each day was around 100km of mountain roads weaving through the most amazing landscape.

Most people get driven round by a local and sit on the back 7 of our group did this including Hamish to take in the sights. I drove myself (sorry for lying mum), it is described as the most dangerous road in Vietnam, but it was not that bad, some of the road was missing so potholes and gravel were the biggest obstacles other than a rather large streak of oil conveniently placed at the end of a corner that made me and the other self driver Reto fall off and skid about 10m resulting in some torn clothes but we were fine and got back on other than that it was incident free.

We were placed in groups of 10 and stopped off at viewpoints and activities throughout the day notable ones include the Chinese boarder (normally you can sneak in but it was guarded when we went), the biggest flag in Vietnam, boat trip on a reservoirs, swimming under a waterfall, biggest cave in Ha Giang, random fires at the side of the road when cold. (It was very cold)

Each night 3 or 4 groups would stay at the same homestay and we could get drunk together and mingle round the fire then some karaoke music shut off at 10 and drinks stopped at 12 so that we weren’t too hungover for the 9am start the next day.

Hamish - Also shoutout to my driver Duc, such a stud. Made a friend and he made the trip that much better.

  • Cat Ba

    21 december 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Spent 4 days in Cat Ba, was really chilled out staying in one of the better hostels travelling so far. It was social but not too party either. I managed to meet people and the first day we went on a scooter ride exploring the island, stopping off at random points which led to us climbing a hill and finding a mandarin farm enclosed by the mountains. Very cool, we all picked a couple to try from the trees and sat peacefully for a while.

The other few days I spent on a boat trip to ha long bay, and the surrounding area where we kayaked through the caves taking in the views. Also took a day for a solo scooter trip around the island which was class, the roads were great there and the weather was perfect. We managed to win the hostel quiz on the last night with people I met on the boat tour which was good fun (shoutout to Rebecca for singing in the music round to secure the free mojito). Back to Hanoi today and Christmas dinner has been booked for tomorrow at hostel.

Also just had some traditional Vietnamese food with a Vietnamese content creator who approached me, she said she had 500k followers? I might be seeing that soon 🤣.

  • Luang Prabang

    29 december 2024, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

3 nights spent here. Not been the greatest place to stay so far with the hostel being almost empty but managed to meet a couple of people here. Laos is a much less developed country than Vietnam and Thailand, does not have nearly the same amount of places to eat or drink and the roads are terrible. Still very nice though and the weather is much better than Hanoi at least.

Main attraction here is the Kuangsi waterfalls which I visited today by bike. They were better than I expected although very busy (Chinatown). Bowling alley is popular here as well as it’s the only place to drink after 11pm curfew (commie government) but not sure if there’s enough people in hostel to go with.

Train booked for Vang Vieng tomorrow, heard it’s much busier and a good vibe from people coming the other way. Looking to spend new years there.

  • Vang Vieng

    2 januari, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Spent 5 nights here over new year. The main highlights were the lagoons and the paramotoring as well climbing Nam Xay viewpoint. Stayed in the Mad Monkey hostel which wasn’t the most social although better than Luang Prabang. A lot of Dutch and Germans in groups so didn’t find many people to do stuff with during the day. Still managed to meet people to go out with at night which was fine. Final day we went tipsy tubing with girls I’d met the night before which was good fun as well. Vang Vieng as a town was quite run down and didn’t find anywhere good to eat but with a much better night life than Luang Prabang. Slow boat booked for early doors tomorrow heading to Pakbeng, staying overnight, and then heading to Huay Xai at the Thai-Lao border to get a bus to Chiang Rai 🇹🇭.Läs mer

  • Nong Khiaw

    6 januari, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Completed 2 day hiking trip in Nong Khiaw in north Laos. Hike was challenging to get up with how unfit I am but was still manageable. Sunset was amazing above the clouds and then we just sat around the fire at night. Sleeping situation was brutal on a thin mat and the ground was solid, if I slept for an hour I’d be shocked. Finally woke up for the sunrise which we didn’t really get to see because of the fog but still worth it overall and the group was good fun. Back to Luang Prabang to recalibrate and then onto Thailand finally.Läs mer

    9 januari, Laos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

2 days trip along the Mekong stopping off in Pakbeng, staying overnight then finishing in Huay Xai at the Thai-Lao border. Managed to rush across before the border closed and ended up in Chiang Rai last night. Boat was very smooth overall and nice views along the river seeing the small villages along the way. Good to be back in Thailand.Läs mer
