Zestful Zakynthos ๐ฌ๐ทโ๏ธ๐ข๐ฉต

OR: SLOW & STEADY wins the race: to Kerri Caves & Turtle ๐ข Island ๐๏ธ
An amazing sunrise ๐
as we caught the tender from the ship to the island ๐๏ธof Zakynthos. We have been using an app on our phones called ‘Get your Guide’ for all of the tours we go on… They are about a third of the price of the ship excursion cost and they have been absolutely fantastic: you are connected with great ๐๐ป reputable companies!
Forward planning pays off! ๐ ๐๐ป
Shout out to another fantastic app that I have used during this holiday : AIRALO for E-Sim cards for the phone ๐ฑ Without it, navigating to particular points of interest and to company locations would not have been as simple. The map ๐บ๏ธ component has been invaluable. I have never travelled with a phone connection (previously only relying on wi-fi at hotels ๐จ & cafes โ๏ธ). This is the first time, and I now realise it is extremely handy. In one way it is also sad ๐ because up until now I have happily travelled ๐งณ the world without any ‘connection’. There are positives and negatives for everything… You learn that lesson when travelling ๐งญ
Zakynthos is the most southern point of the Ionian Islands and the third largest. It covers an area of almost 405 sq. km. Zakynthos, an island with great contrasts such as golden sand beaches and imposing rocky shores, has a temperate, Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and cool summers. Zakynthos also has a long and rich culture, much influenced by the Venetians. According to mythology and the writings of Homer, the island was named after Zakynthos who was grandson of Zeus and Electra and the son of Dardanus who founded Troy! (Personal connection to me ๐ …nice way to round off the cruise ๐ข)
Waters ๐ around Zakynthos often have electric light blue ๐ฉต๐ฉต๐ฉตcolour because of the numerous sulphurous caves around the beach and when the sea is rising a large quantity of sulphur radiates, giving the possibility of taking beautiful pictures. We did just that on our Turtle ๐ข island and Kerri caves boat tour… We took to the spectacular, calm blue waters of the Adriatic Sea for a Slo-mo boat ๐ฅ๏ธ ride (turtle pace) to this part of the heritage listed island. We were a little bit worried about the time (5 hour trip) and getting back to the ship before it sailed off without us! We actually saw turtles ๐ข at the bottom of the crystal clear ocean as we passed through the cove. โ๏ธ ๐ ๐ฌ๐ท Just so cute!
We spent the entire day in and out of the boat, jumping into the clearest and most beautifully transparent blue water ๐ง I have ever seen in my life! It was simply divine. The temperature in the water & out was perfect โ๏ธ
The turquoise water lapped against the white cliffs as we joyfully made the most of the last beach swim this holiday ๐ข
We arrived at the final swimming spot and there were little boats selling beers ๐ป and food! We swam and drank coronas ๐ in the sun! ๐๐ข๐บ๐บ๐บโ๏ธโ๏ธ
The images will speak for themselves… please ๐ take a look at the videos as well: sublime! The only thing that slightly tarnished a perfect day was the last minute worry that we would not make it back to ship in time! Thankfully we made it to the port with seconds to spare; not before having to tell the bus ๐ driver
to “…take a straight to the fucking Port…” when he took a turn to go to the olive ๐ซ pressing factory! ๐ญ
Phew ๐ฎ๐จ ๐ข
A more amazing 5 hours I cannot recall! It was so magnificent, breathtaking and stunningly relaxing ๐ ๐๐ค๐ฉต
Transported me back to those days when I’d spend all day at beach ๐๏ธ as a child, in & out of water, sunning myself, relaxing ๐ & feeling salty, sunburned & genuinely grateful: travelling reconnects you to that part of yourself that you thought ๐ญ you’d forgotten… ๐Read more

TravelerStunning. Iโm not at all jealousโฆIt has been a nearly perfect holiday for you and this was the best way to finish. Memories to last you a lifetime.

Three Coins ๐ช in the Fountain โฒ๏ธ

The last day in Italy ๐ฎ๐น started with a looooong 6 hour bus ๐ ride from Bari, where the ship ๐ข docked, to the ‘wonderful’ (๐ณ๐คฅ) Papillo Hotel ๐จ outside of Rome…
Most of us were able to have 2 seats ๐บ each and the bus was quite new & comfortable so it was not too arduous. Everyone was more subdued, quiet and reflective after the last three weeks of joyful holiday celebration.
On arrival at the Papillo Hotel which, I can say, without a doubt, is the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in in my entire life… (…And, that is honestly saying something!) It’s an absolute disgrace of a place which is the middle of nowhere… Anyway, I digress…
We all decided that we would get ๐ taxi’s into Rome, which is essentially a 40 minute drive from the hideous hotel ๐จ
Picture this: eight hungry and tired travellers wandering aimlessly around the centre of Rome, trying to decide on somewhere to eat… It almost didn’t end well until we stumbled upon a very authentic Trattoria, which served the most exquisite, authentic and delicious ๐ carbonara, tiramisu and jugs of house white wine ๐ท and freshly baked bread with oil and balsamic vinegar… It was just what we all needed to perk us up and get us back in the mood to enjoy one final significant activity in Rome…
Tossing 3 coins ๐ช into the Trevi Fountain โฒ๏ธ with the hopes to come back to Italy, fall in love or whatever each of us secretly wished for ๐
The tradition, folklore, and history of how to toss a coin into the Trevi have not changed in all the hundreds of years that people have been doing it. A proper Trevi coin toss is done using your right hand to throw the coin over your left shoulder. Additionally, if you plan to throw a second and third coin into the fountain, each is to be tossed separately, not all at once. That means right hand over left shoulder three times with three individual coins to be married in Rome—after falling in love with a native, of course ๐๐ฅฐ๐
While there are surely lovers of Italy and lovers in general who will swear their wishes came true because of the coins they tossed into the Trevi Fountain, there’s no denying how much revenue from coin tosses have helped the city of Rome. An estimated 3,000 euros fly into the Trevi each day!
The world-renowned Italian fountain takes in approximately 1,250,000 euros annually. While these large sums have attracted the eye of thieves throughout the ages, attempts at stealing from the Trevi โฒ๏ธ have almost always been thwarted.
As travelers pray for a promise to return to Rome someday, the city of Rome uses the money gathered at the Trevi to pay for the food and upkeep of a market for the area’s poorest inhabitants which is great ๐๐ป to know.
There just happened to be somebody proposing at the exact spot we threw our coins into the fountain tonight so perhaps we had a hand in that love โค๏ธ match ๐๐คท๐ปโ๏ธ
Anyway, whether you believe or not one thing is for sure… We have had a fantastic time in Italy ๐ฎ๐น and it has delivered the promise of wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. That is something we know for sure and I no longer need to wish for…
Ciao Bella… ๐๐คโค๏ธRead more

Quality Qatar โ๏ธ

Up at Sparrows this morning: 5am ๐ packed and ready to depart the cesspit that is ‘Putrid Papillo’ ๐จ
There is not one member of our tour group that is determined to bombard the review pages in smear campaigns to rival a Trump Administration! Not much is guaranteed in life but this is: Never ๐๐ป again!
Anyway… Neil…”….letting it go..!” ๐
Seamless airport check-in and security. Rome’s airport is fantastic. Clean, efficient & the staff actually look refreshed & happy to be there; a rare sight these days! A+ โ๏ธ
TripADeal actually has worked for us well on our journey home (…well, for me anyway…) I’m really excited ๐ for the long 27 hour layover because it means they booked us a 5 star hotel complete with personal transfers to & from: bonus holi-day if you ask me!Booked a tour for a sightseeing around Doha and break up an otherwise relentlessly long journey Down Under A+ TripADeal ๐
As a Privilege Member on Qatar ๐ถ๐ฆ โ๏ธ I get complimentary wi-fi for an hour! How spiffy to actually get internet ๐ access 35,000 feet ๐ฃ in the air! Fun ๐คฉ
Qatar is such a great airline! One of the best! I would never hesitate in recommending flying with them. The meals were and are delicious and the service is great A+ Qatar ๐ถ๐ฆ
On arrival in Doha we discovered just how quiet ๐คซ and clean the airport really is! Spotless ๐๐ป ๐งฝ
We also discovered how efficient the processes are because when we went up to the Doha information counter the workers knew exactly who we were and immediately took our bags and us in a chauffeured limousine to the Holiday Inn ๐จ which is a cut above anything we have stayed in this holiday! It is five star โญ๏ธ with a pool ๐โ๏ธ and a bar which we discovered sells glasses of wine ๐ท for $25 and cocktails ๐ธ for $35! We don’t mind spending generously on holidays but not ridiculously so we went out into the 40° heat โ๏ธ๐ฅต and found an authentic little restaurant and got an entire meal ๐ฅ for less than $40. It was very Indian influenced and the owners were very kind and generous, and knew all about the MCG and the cricket in Australia ๐ฆ๐บ๐
German felt his stomach churning so we came back to the comfort of our five star ๐ establishment and called it a night… Tour planned tomorrow: covering the main sites so that will be my final holiday post… With a heavy heart… ๐ฅบ๐ข๐
LT, like the gals in Sex & the City ๐ we may even run into Richard Spurt out & about tomorrow ๐๐๐ฆโ๏ธ
And an interesting tidbit for you… Our limousine driver told us that you can be fined if you don’t have air conditioning in your car for the tourists when they arrive ๐๐๐ปโ๏ธRead more

Dazzling Doha โจโ๏ธ๐ณ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐๏ธ๐ช๐ฆ

Shiny โจ & New on the surface but not so glamorous ๐ณ behind the scenes sums up Doha. In 27 hours we saw 2 sides. Disclaimer: obviously not long enough to make full assessment.
The Metro ๐ was extremely shiny โจ and new: slick trains ๐ and prompt services. We got a bit lost but did very well connecting different lines and platforms to find our tour location. It was only $2.50 for day pass.
Arrived at Souq Waqif we passed by poor workers who had the arduous task of sweeping ๐งน the giant forecourt of the Souq Waqif (Market) with brooms in 30+ heat ๐ฅ
The desert ๐๏ธ sand comes into city ๐ overnight from the strong north wind ๐จ and they keep city as clean as possible. In ‘Winter’ (Jan-Feb) wind ๐ฌ๏ธ is so strong the sand comes into your house! ๐ณ
Walking through the Souq we could smell so many beautiful fragrances from the perfumes and foods such as cinnamon and Cardamon, cloves and hibiscus flowers… Smells filled the air around every corner and at every turn… So delicious…until we got to the camel enclosure.
Camels ๐ช are a sacred animal and are extremely precious and protected. They are well looked after and well fed. They have 35 g of fat in their hump which is their store for food. There were also squeaks & crowing, cheeps & chirping from birds ๐ฆ and chickens ๐ and many other animals… It really was a feast for sight & sound! At exactly 1 o’clock in the afternoon at the hottest part of the day everyone shut up shop and rested! Don’t blame them! ๐ฅต๐ฅต
We visited the Falcon Souq. Falcons are revered also and considered very sacred animals. There was even a hospital ๐ฅ which was purposely built for Falcons, which is where we met one of the Falcons’ with its owner… He very respectfully allowed us to take his photo ๐
Our guide told us that Doha is one of the safest places in the Middle East.
We visited West Bay, which is the iconic image that we often see of Doha skyline ๐๏ธ All of these very tall buildings have all sprung up in the last 30 years. The first building was the Sheraton Hotel ๐จ which is shaped like a pyramid which was built in 1985.
We finished the tour in the hottest part of the day and came back to the Souq after visiting Doha Cultural Centre. Enjoyed a traditional lunch and while German headed to the Museum I decided to relax with an aromatic Hibiscus ๐บ tea at the pool overlooking the city.
So, I suppose it has come to an end ๐ฅบ๐ข …yet another adventure of a lifetime. Loved ๐ฅฐ every minute of discovering new, beautiful & unique places. Really enjoyed sharing this with you and can’t wait for another chance to make more memories……after I save up ๐ฐ Travel ๐งญ is the best tonic for the mind, body & soul ๐ง๐ปโ๏ธ

Guess thatโs why they call it the blues!

Well, back home ๐ and the post holiday blues have kicked in like clockwork! To say that I was not looking forward to coming home, is an understatement!
If there was some way I could continue travelling ๐งญ forever I’d do it in a heartbeat! ๐งณ๐๐ปโ๏ธ
Jet-lag โ๏ธ is also a bitch, but it is secondary to the realisation that normality will kick in soon ๐ฅน Many changes are looming, but hopefully ๐ I’ll tackle them carefully & thoughtfully; reminding myself often of what is truly important.
While sipping rose from my exquisite Murano glass I’m reflecting: This has been a fantastic holiday and I have learnt a lot more about myself and things that I need to change…
The relief from me feeling flat has been opening up my treasured mementos from this beautiful experience… Yes, stuff is not important, but in this case, each item evokes feelings of contentment, satisfaction and excitement… Nothing compares with memories deep in your mind, but these bring back feelings, emotions and even fragrances from different destinations…
Marta told me, in Venice (…now my second favourite city) that she had forgotten how my enthusiasm for discovering new places & experiences was ‘infectious’.
To me, this was one of the most beautiful compliments I’ve ever received ๐ฅฐ
There is NOTHING in the world that makes me happier than travel ๐งญ and the memories will keep me content until the next trip…
