Polonnaruwa

Today we are driving 3 hours to visit Polonnaruwa Ancient site.

This former Royal Capital is nearly 1000 years old. We visited a large archaeological park packed with 100's of ancient structures - tombs, temples, statues and stupa.

First we visited The Kings Council Chamber and the Royal Baths.

Military action and the break down of the irrigation system in the 13th Century meant that the city was abandoned and eventually overtaken by the jungle.Read more
