  • Anzac Hill

    August 24, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Last stop for the day is Anzac Hill. The lookout offers a panoramic view of Alice Springs and the surrounding ranges.

The Anzac Hill Memorial was unveiled on 25 April 1934 and was originally dedicated to those members of the armed services who had paid the supreme sacrifice during World War I. It has now become a memorial to those who have served in the defence of their country during all wars in which Australia has participated.

Commemorative signs and sculptural pieces line the drive to the carpark near the top of the hill. The signs are dedicated to the contribution of women, men and places of Central Australia over 100 years of Australian military history.

  • Leaving Alice Spings

    August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

On our way to our next destination. A Town like Alice was very interesting. Heaps to see and do, a shame we never got to do the ballooning over the MacDonnell Ranges. We might just have to come back one day to see everything Alice has to offer. Maybe some friends would like to join so we can tour more of this beautiful wide land.

Good bye Alice here we come Uluru.

  • Driving to Stuarts Well

    August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

The drive from Alice Springs to Stuarts Well along the Stuart Highway is very straight and very bumpy. I guess we will get used to that the more we drive. The vegetation is very low and dry. Speed limit 130km not that we will be doing that speed.Read more

  • Stuarts Well Roadhouse

Petrol and morning tea stop. What an interesting spot so many very outback Australia memorabilia items especially the toilet benches around the fireplace. A bit too early for the lunch soup special though.

On to the next stop Erldunda. John still happy to drive.

  • Cannonball Run Memorial

    August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The monument commemorates Keith Pritchard, Timothy Linklater, Akihiro Kabe, Takeshi Okana who were killed during the Cannonball Run.

The Northern Territory Cannonball Run was held from 22 May to the 27 May in 1994 on the Stuart Highway from Darwin to Alice Springs and return. A total distance of approximately 3200 kilometres, it attracted 118 racing enthusiasts from all over the world with their expensive machines. The race contained three distinct driving phases within the one event. These were the "flying miles", the timed sectors and, covering by far the greatest distance, normal, everyday driving during which there was no competitive element.

The "flying miles" were a test of a car's acceleration with cars cross the starting line at 60 kilometres per hour and 1600 metres later their speed was recorded by radar, with points awarded accordingly. The timed sections of the run were approximately 100 kilometre stretches to which set times was applied.

On 24 May, during one of the timed sections near Alice Springs, a Ferrari F40 crashed into a checkpost killing its occupants, the Japanese duo Akihiro Kabe and co-driver Takeshi Okano and two track officials, Tim Linklater and Keith Pritchard. An inquest found that the direct cause of the accident was driver error on the part of the Japanese team which entered the checkpoint at an excessive speed.

  • Driving to Erldunda

    August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Still 130 km driving speed along Stuart Highway the road flat and bumpy a few rock formations and hardly anyone on the road. Easy to fall asleep. No wonder this road is the most dangerous in NT.

  • Erldunda

    August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Erldunda is a lot more substantial than the previous stop. Still basic food in the Cafe but we are eating in the van. Much easy for my tummy. Still has an emu park.

We are also in the Centre of Australia. The locals call it Centre of the Centre.

We will now be travelling along Lasseter Highway to Uluru.

  • Mount Conner

    August 25, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Mount Conner, 300 metres above the surrounding plain, is a flat-topped and horseshoe-shaped monolith, part of the same vast rocky substrate thought to be beneath Uluru/Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta/Olgas.

It can easily be and often is confused with Uluru since it can be seen from the road to Uluru and Kata Tjuta, when approaching from Alice Springs.

It is also known as Foolaru by the locals as many overseas people think it is Uluru turn around and go back to Alice Springs.

  • Scenic Flight

    August 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

This morning we went on a Scenic Flight around Uluru. I was in the front seat so a great view taking off and landing. The flight was only 20min but we went over the Resort and over well, not over but close to the Rock. I do feel a helicopter might have been a little better. Maybe next time.Read more

  • Bush Tucker

    August 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

The reason to get to the other part of the resort was so we could listen to a bush tucker talk. The guides were excellent explaining where, what and how to gather, prepare and cook different berries, seeds. We even tried shortbread biscuits with wattle seeds which is almost bush tucker.Read more

  • Gallery

    August 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

  • Sounds of Silence Dinner

    August 26, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

    Then dinner.

The food was average but still fun and worth doing at least once. We sat with an interesting group of people, a couple from Blue Mountains who live in Newcastle at the moment, another couple from Newcastle who work in the city so during the week they live in Glebe, a couple from Tasmania and a couple from the Northern Beaches in Narrabeen. Conversation was very varied.

During dinner there was an incredible presentation about the stars. The talk was extremely informative and funny at the same time.

Time for dessert and port, again quite basic but the whole group of 93 people sang Happy Birthday to me, and I was even presented with my own special dessert.

All in all, a very special night to celebrate my 65th birthday.
