  • Prasat Thong Kham (Golden Castle)

    4 de octubre de 2023, Tailandia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

A lot of driving today. After 2 hours we finally arrived at our first attraction for the day, and it was definitely worth the drive.

Wat Tha Sung, is a large Buddhist complex which also has The Golden Castle and the Diamond Temple. It is undoubtedly the most famous and visited temple in Uthai Thani province. Built in the Ayutthaya period with tree trunks, it was nicknamed Wat Tha Sung, sung meaning log in Thai. The original temple gradually fell into disrepair until the revered monk Luang Por Ruesi Ling Dam launched its restoration and turned it into a big centre for Buddhist teaching.

The Golden Castle was incredible, absolutely stunning.

Prasat Thong Kham also nicknamed the Golden Castle. Exterior and interior are covered in gold with magnificently carved reliefs, especially on the many doors of the building.

  • Sukhothai Historical Park

    5 de octubre de 2023, Tailandia ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

Today we started later than usual, which was nice. Our tourist agenda today is visiting Sukhothai Historical Park which is very close to our Hotel.

Once at the Park we hopped into an old style electric golf cart to take us around.

The Sukhothai Historical Park ruins are one of Thailand’s most impressive World Heritage sites. The park includes the remains of 21 historical sites and four large ponds within the old walls, with an additional 70 sites within a 5km radius.

The architecture of Sukhothai temples is most typified by the classic lotus-bud chedi, featuring a conical spire topping a square-sided structure on a three-tiered base. Some sites exhibit other rich architectural forms introduced and modified during the period, such as bell-shaped Sinhalese and double-tiered Srivijaya chedi.

    6 de octubre de 2023, Tailandia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

A long and winding road in the countryside was a short cut to Chiang Mai according to Pod our driver. Not sure it was shorter but took 4 hours. No rain but mist over the mountains. Even drove through a rice paddy.

Lid talked about food for the first 2 hours, John slept or pretended to sleep not sure which.

We had a very short break for a coffee and then back on the road.

Overlooking the city from its mountain throne, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of northern Thailand's most sacred temples, and its founding legend is learned by every schoolkid in Chiang Mai. The wát is a beautiful example of northern Thai architecture, reached via a 306-step staircase flanked by naga (mythical sea serpents). The climb is intended to help devotees accrue Buddhist merit. We took the cable car.

  • Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep

    6 de octubre de 2023, Tailandia ⋅ 🌩️ 29 °C

The monastery was established in 1383 by King Keu Naone to enshrine a piece of bone said to be from the shoulder of the historical Buddha. The bone shard was brought to Lanna by a wandering monk from Sukhothai and it broke into two pieces at the base of the mountain, with one piece being enshrined at Wat Suan Dok. The second fragment was mounted onto a sacred white elephant that wandered the jungle until it died, in the process selecting the spot where the monastery was later founded.

The terrace at the top of the steps is dotted with breadfruit trees, small shrines, rock gardens and monuments, including a statue of the white elephant that carried the Buddha relic to its current resting place. Before entering the inner courtyard, children pay their respects to a lizard-like guardian dragon statue known as 'Mom'.
