Dunedin proved to be an excellent base to explore the country around. We took a trip on an historic train line into the Tairei Gorge, amasterpiece of 19th Century engineering. A drive out along the Ortago Peninsula is well worthwhile, with a stop to explore the Lanarch Castle, a beautiful 19th Century grand house. WHile in Dunedin, a "must visit" is the Best Cafe, a seafood cafe with beautiful chowder and excellent fish and chips. It is furnished in its 1932 simplicity.Read more
