Shrewsbury — The Abbey

Brother Cadfael brought me to Shrewsbury and I’m so glad he did. I’m in Shropshire now, in western England. The author Edith Pargeter created Cadfael, the 12th century Benedictine monk turned sleuth in her historical mysteries written under the name of Ellis Peters. This is one of my favorite mystery series, and it’s set in the Shrewsbury Abbey which holds the Shrine of St Winefride, a medieval pilgrimage site. There’s a great British tv series based on the books which stars Derek Jacobi. The abbey has a Benedictine window which includes one small section that honors Pargeter and this beloved character. This visit was a highlight of my English travels so far.Les mer
