  • This is NOT Biden Country

    July 17, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    Very clear about it.

  • Palisade Falls

    July 17, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 81 °F

Packing day so I thought I’d make one more “day trip” before leaving this beautiful area.

The .7 mile walk up to the falls was a TON easier coming back down 😂

  • Homeward Bound

    July 18, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

Woke up early and hit the road. Mostly packed from last night so checked out and hit the road.

Will make 600 miles and S. Dakota today.

More bugs on windshield than ever and unfortunately, rocks from const trucks.

    Gonna need another windshield.

  • SD for the night

    July 18, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 106 °F

600 miles per day. Not much here but a good stopping point.

Went by Sturgis, Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments without stopping (been there).

I’ll get some rest, dinner and hit the road early.

The town of Kadoka, SD boasts a population of 543! Tonight 544!

  • Iowa Bound

    July 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

6:00 AM departure. Just miles from Central Time Zone.

  • Lewis & Clark trail

    July 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Much of this trip crosses or follows the “Lewis & Clark” trail highway. Much is glorified by “wannabe” towns with doubtful ties to the actual event.

However, any time my route crosses a monument or National marker I try and stop.

This part of the trail is crossed by numerous bridges/rail and car. I can only imagine seeing it from small boats for the first time.

  • Lewis & Clark Camp

    July 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 91 °F

This leg crossed the Missouri River (massive river) and according to the monuments, was a L&C camp on their way west. There’s no physical representation remaining but Meriwether Lewis’ writings apparently document the location by lat/long.

I got so pumped up after seeing this “camp” that I re-started “Undaunted Courage” - the most accurate history of the trip. Incredible book and a reminder of when we (US Patriots) risked all for this new “experiment” in the first part of the 1800’s, when we were a fledgling country.

  • Arrived Grinnel, Iowa

    July 19, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

About 45 mins east of Des Moines, I took a quick ride north to see a spice plant I designed in Ankeny.

It was onions, pepper and garlic. One of my toughest commissions and one of the best. Even though my Client sued the contractor, who in turn sued me, my Client still wrote one of the nicest recommendation letters I’ve received.

So here I sit, West Va tomorrow with a car covered with bugs and a broken windshield 😂

  • On To WVa

    July 20, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Final hotel before the home stretch. This will be the longest leg (675 miles) and I cross another time zone so it’ll be about 11 hrs driving, 12 hrs elapsed.

One striking thing I noticed while leaving the hotel and heading east is the miles and miles of corn fields. Incredible.

Also the most windmills I’ve ever seen, sometimes hundreds from every angle tucked into the corn fields. Trucks carrying a windmill vane are also a sight to see. The vanes appear to be 150’-200’ long and dwarf the truck carrying them as well as the lead and following cars.

  • Home again. 5,536 miles

    July 21, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 88 °F

“Crossed my wake” in Charleston, WVa at 5,265 miles. Not bad….not too bad at all.

Bit of fog in mountains. Stopped in Charlottesville to gas up (“only $3.25/gal) and to make my normal deposit.

    Rosie was pretty happy 😇
