  • Porika “Road” - definitely not a road

    28 de outubro de 2023, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

We woke up to blessed sunshine at the gorgeous Rotoroa Lake and decided it was time for a break from hwy ride. We chatted with a few locals about Porika Road, a 22km unmaintained 4x4 road from the lake to nearby St Arnaud. “You’ve got this,” said the locals, “let’s have an adventure,” we said. And adventure we did.

Today ended up being potentially the most challenging of our 1+ year in NZ. Huge rocks, deep crevices, and a steep grade that would make even the fittest wary. The track climbed 600m in less than 4km and it was by no means ridable with out touring set up. This meant that we were pushing the bikes uphill for at least 5hours, sometimes abandoning taking one bike at a time over the more difficult spots.

Lots of huffing and puffing with a story to tell but we staggered our way to St Arnaud and camped alongside Lake Rotoiti. It was sweet to be back as this was one of our first camp spots together back in March before starting the Rainbow Road.

Keirra was excited about a bookstore and Richard was excited about a sunglasses store. we stayed overnight in a garden via warm showers. another bikepacker (Jonathan from Belgium) also camped there. Together we went to check in the ferry early at 6:45 a.m.

Finished off our hike feeling a bit tired, both from the use of different muscles and because we had some fellow hikers arrive in the hut at midnight!

We decided to spent two nights at this sweet campsite in Ekētahuna. Did some laundry, caught up on z’s, and enjoyed the sunshine!Leia mais

  • Rotorua

    10 de dezembro de 2023, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After two nights with wild coughs, colds and a little fever, we decided to hitchhike again. Unfortunately no one actually stopped and so we tried to cycle. After a two-day break, we had a lot of fun riding our bikes and luckily we felt fine physically. We disturbed each other over a fries. Smoke was coming out everywhere and we explored the thermal world in the area :)

  • Windy and Back at the Beach

    12 de dezembro de 2023, Nova Zelândia ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

The wind may be raging at 45km/hr but for the most part, they’ve been tailwinds. Richard and I soared downhill from Okere Falls back toward the east coast. We ended the day with an atrociously expensive and pitifully small bowl of kumara chips. Another reminded that most of the time it’s best to save your money and cook your own when it comes to kiwi food.

Now we’re enjoying some blessed shelter in our wee cabin for the night and restoring our energy before diving into the ocean for a swim. Joy!

  • 80km on the highway:/

    14 de dezembro de 2023, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Big winds again and a lot of aggressive driving. We were being pummelled by head and side winds for the first 50km. Luckily the last 30, although hilly and narrow, were tailwinds.

Despite the honks/shouts/close passes from some angry drivers, we ended the day with smiles on our faces. Sweet cafe owners gave us cake on the house and our camp host offered us a free night’s stay—simply because she was impressed we were travelling by bike! Now we sleep to the sound of the waves at beautiful Whangamata Beach.Leia mais

  • Auckland again

    22 de janeiro de 2024, Nova Zelândia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

After 6 weeks working in a sweet cafe in Whenuakite, it’s time for us to begin the journey out of Aotearoa. Last night, while enjoying a final games night with our colleagues, we were offered an unexpected ride to Auckland. Chris, the marketing manager from our campsite, drove us the 150+km, saving us about 3 days of riding.

We spent the day ticking off some of our “to do” list in preparing for south east Asia. Overall, we were reminded just how much we prefer the countryside to big cities. Smelly, noisy, and busy but we ended the day at a quiet campsite by the ocean. Now a few more days before we encounter the much much bigger city of Singapore. Count down is on!
