    Alto el naranjo

    October 24 in Chile ☁️ 10 °C

What's a better outlook than a hike on a Saturday. We decide to take on the alto el naranjo, in the higher mountains the weather is quite unstable right now. It's a nice hike that's not too difficult. During the day the clouds clear up and offer a view of the cerro provincia. We finished the day with a crudo and a churrasco.Read more

  • Big things ahead

    October 16 in Chile ☁️ 15 °C

There is a first for everything. Also for installing a whole engine into machinery. Though I studied mechanical engineering, I had quite some respect since it was a first for everyone involved. But as always in engineering, it was installed by humans so it can be taken apart by humans (also in reverse). At 8pm we finish the day with a great dinner at a Parilla. What a day.

On sunday I do the cerro carbon again, being 10 minutes quicker than the last time, that's active recovery.
In the city centre are protests on sunday, so even the subway smells like tear gas.

  • Desierto florido - the next "the day"

    October 11 in Chile ☀️ 20 °C

This day was planned more chill. We found some ideas for roads to take on Instagram and were really impressed, we found the biggest flowers field so far. Flowers as far as you can see.
In the afternoon we drive to the playa la Virgin, supposed to be the most beautiful beach in Chile. The sand is white and the water blue and very clear. For chileans waters even quite warm, you can stay in it for a while without freezing.
The sunblock and my german skin where in a heavy fight against the desert sun, but agreed on a very light sunburn and 3x applying sunblock.
After the beach we find a great churrasco Marino and seafood empanadas.
We sleep in the quiet town of caldera.

  • Desierto florido - the day

    October 10 in Chile ☁️ 18 °C

A large day lies ahead of us, so its time to put on the shirt of the chilean football team. The first stop is a national park llanos de challe. For a small entrance fee of 5 luca you can enter. Some smaller walks are available so the people are being distributed a bit. Here we see the first larger amounts of flowers. Very beautiful.
The next stop is the parque nacional desierto florido, which you can enter with the car and you can also do a small walk. It's even more impressive than the first parc. Along the road, there are large fields of flowers from now and then.
We end the day in Copiapo, a really ugly mining town. But with some great ceviche, tuna and squid at a Peruvian restaurant.

  • Desierto Florido - day 1

    October 9 in Chile ☀️ 24 °C

Heavy winter storms brought rain to the atacama desert, which let's the desert bloom. A fascinating scenario that only occurs every few years. The last year with rainfalls as heavy as this years, where in 1998.
We take a flight from santiago to la serena where we pick up our rental and continue to a place close to Vallenar.
During my motorbike trip I made a stop in this city there is not a lot too see, a classical northern mining town. Luckily our cabana is outside of the city. We find some german beer and a nice place for a sunset accompanied by some friendly stray dogs.

Large rainstorms caused flooded streets and even landslides in las condes, luckily in a part of the city where there are enough resources available. But everyone that i know is well and not affected.

  • El gato en la ventana!

    Oct 2–4 in Chile ⛅ 18 °C

On Friday we go to the bar el gato en la ventana. A bar where we had one of our first dates. There lives a black cat inside that always looks for the most comfortable pants to take a nap on.
On Saturday there is a concert of the band los tres as part of the maraton de vina. After the concert we go to a drift show with some friends.
Sunday morning we get up early because karela runs the 10k along the coast, starting at 7.30!
And on sunday its also the festival of mil tambores in Valparaiso. Groups that play the drums come from all over chile and neighboring countries to valparaiso to participate in the parade that goes on the whole day.

And of course a lot of music with people dances, and the cueca cannot be missing.
On Saturday we have an assado at the beach with my family and after that we continue to putaendo, where we make some empanadas and the first cabritas are being born.

  • The 18 is coming!

    Sep 4–6 in Chile ☀️ 18 °C

The dieciocho is coming ! It's the biggest national holiday in chile. Usually the chileans make an asado, eat empanadas and drink terremotos (a drink with wine, grenadine and pineapple ice cream). This Friday its the event of my employer and we even have a Cordero (sheep), it takes around 5 hours to cook. But its a great event and the people are very nice.

On Saturday we drive to Putaendo so that I get to know the family of karela. Putaendo is right in the andes, the chileans would call it campo. A great very rural experience. And of course completos cannot be missing. On sunday we make our way back to santiago.
