    Wetlands store and slowly release water, reducing erosion and flood damage. They also help to recharge groundwater, providing necessary water flow in dry years.

    An acre of wetland can store 1-1.5 million gallons of floodwater.

    Up to half of North American bird species nest or feed in wetlands.
