Halifax arrival

Today, we were up at 0400 to fly from Montréal, Quebec, to Halifax, Nova Scotia. This afternoon, we had some free time to explore along the boardwalk. There are some interesting boat types to be seen here.

The last five days have been the pre-trip extension. The full group should all arrive this evening.Read more

Travel to Baddeck, Cape Breton Island

Today, we spent most of the time on a bus trip to Beddeck. First stop was at an education center on the Mi'kmaw First American people. The second stop was at the Alexander Graham Bell museum.

A replica of the first Canadian plane to fly is there.

We found a hummingbird that had flown into a window. After a few minutes it started to try its wings.Read more

TravelerA young girl had picked it up at the window and passed on to one of our friends who has had hummers stun themselves at their windows. The hummers are very light, usually coming around in a few minutes.

Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic

One-day bus trip to a fortress that was active in the seventeen hundreds, and then abandoned for some 300 years. It was restored (rebuilt) early last century as an active educational site. There were many period reinactors, and much to see. It included one in period costume with a mask. The jail was brutal with leg irons and all.

The forests showed extensive damage from a recent huricane, thousands of trees down.Read more

Travel to Prince Edward Island

Bus travel today was first to a small town where a Syrian refugee family started a chocolate business, Peace by Chocolate. There is a Netflix movie about their work. Afterward, it was to Pictou and a maritime museum. This included a live demonstration on lobster culture. Then we crossed over to Prince Edward Island by auto ferry.Read more

Busy day with a visit to an active horse surrey track, to the Anne of Green Gables Museum and the sites that the story is based on, to planting potatoes (big business here), to an oyster farm that put out 26 million oysters last year, to a review of the extensive damage from the hurricane Fiona (many forested areas look like pick-up-sticks), to looking at lobster harvesting rules and procedures, and to trying Cow ice cream.Read more

Bay of Fundy with 48ft tides

Road trip to St John, New Brunswick, with a road stop. There, our leader, Laurie, asked me to join her dressed as Anne of Green Gables. Those who know me could not believe that I did this. I figured why not.

Later, we stopped at Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park. Here, the daily tide can go above 48 feet.

The Confederation Bridge crossing came next. It is an engineering marvel. We crossed in the fog and saw little.

Later we saw some marmots. They showed no fear.Read more

A long travel day

Today was a travel day going from St John, New Brunswick, Canada, to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It would be easier and faster if these sites were closer together, but.... Much of the area is forested, and that is bringing out the forester in me.

Pat relaxed and did a lot of reading while we were traveling. There was one stop at Shediac, New Brunswick, for an educational bay cruise. It was cold and windy with rough water. The group was ready for a mutiny. So we stayed at the dock, and the captain gave a presentation on the lobster life cycle, trapping, and eating. Then we all got a lobster to eat.Read more
