• Most beautiful town in Europe? 🤔

    6. august 2024, Romania ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

That’s what Conde Nest Traveller called Sighișoara - well at least one of them. They said “If you like your Eastern European towns to come with a fear factor, then the Transylvanian city of Sighișoara is for you.” Although the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler I didn’t get impaled here, but do feel I got jibbed at dinner (ordered the Romanian goulash only to be told it was finished for the day.. 15mins later they accepted an order of it from the table next to me).

The old town of the city is very pretty with uneven stone (and slippery af) streets, colourful buildings and a good mix of old fortifications and church’s crammed into a small old town. The clock tower over an arch passageway was the highlight as was the mix of stone and wood. I climbed the stairs of the famous covered walkway expecting a great view from the top. Alas trees covered most of the old town. Seems the steps were just to get you to church without getting your hair and frock wet.

I’ve heard the most English (or to be more precise, American) here than anywhere else on the trip to date. Seems like they read the same article as me. While I liked the town, and think it was beautiful, I think the old town thing was just getting a little repetitive for this week. Never thought I’d hear myself say that.

I’m also starting to get a bit tired, just like my toothbrush which went 18 days without a charge before it started to beg to be recharged. So I decided against heading back into town in the morning and just moving on to my final stop in Romania. It would be easier to share the driving as that has really taken a lot of concentration and worn me down. Tonight will be very much a rest night. Note to past self - should have done this loop of Transylvania the other way around. This would have been first up and would have gotten a much better reception from me.
