• Big Sur

California is noted for it scenic highways. Another wonderful trip we went on today is the 40 mile drive down to Big Sur. (Sur is the Spanish word for south.) Originally named for the Big Sur river, there is also a little stream called the Little Sur River.

The scenery matches anything that we saw on the Monterey Peninsula, but one interesting new development was that our trip was impeded in several places by road construction. Huge mountains from the Coastal Range plunge into the Pacific Ocean. It is not surprising that there are mudslides, rock slides, and quite a few forest fires along this road. There are also some breathtaking houses perched on these cliffs whose photos regularly make it into the architecture magazines.

With such extreme terrain, often subject to earthquakes, it’s no wonder the California highway department was busy yesterday. Still the road is beautiful. The scenery was magnificent and we had a wonderful day.
