• Fifty-four Years

When we got back to Carmel this afternoon, we wanted to spend a little time walking on the beach. We met a couple of young ladies from Germany trying to take a selfie, so we offered to take it for them, and then they asked if we wanted them to take our photograph. We said, “Yes, and would you take the picture of us walking away from you holding hands on the beach?” They took a wonderful shot.

The image that I used to characterize this trip is a photograph taken in 1972 shortly after we were married. Our college classmate Mary Jessup from Divernon, Illinois was visiting with us. We took her down to Carmel Beach, and she got the shot that is the trademark for this trip. I’m contrasting it with the shot our German friends took just to show that after fifty-four years, Glenda, you are “still the one.” Same beach. Same girl. Same love. Fifty-four years.

When we finished our beach walk, we climbed back up the hill and went to our favorite restaurant in Carmel. It is an Italian restaurant called Little Napoli. Glenda ordered lasagna and I had spaghetti and meatballs in an Italian “Sunday sauce.” The food was absolutely wonderful, and since I will be celebrating my birthday in a couple of weeks, they even brought us a decadent fudge brownie covered with a mountain of ice cream. Visiting Little Napoli has become a tradition which we enjoy every time we visit here.
