• A Lazy Afternoon in Monterey

    October 15 in the United States ☀️ 68 °F

The portions for the meal last night in Carmel were way too big and so we wound up bringing half of our lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs back to the room. The Merritt House graciously allowed us to heat our leftovers in their little microwave.

After our lunch in the room, we headed down to the wharf area to look for sea otters. We saw a raft of seven all hanging onto a log, just floating with the log in the kelp. Years ago when we were here, I fell in love with sea otters. I think they are the most charming adorable creatures to watch. They are attentive parents and love to play in the water.

A little while later we came back to the room, rested for a bit and then got in the car to drive to Pacific Grove. It is an absolutely beautiful coastal drive that showcases the rocks near the water’s edge, a landscape that is uniquely Monterey. We sat for about three hours on different benches and rocks just watching the waves crash, the sea otters play, the seals dive, the gulls squawk, and the pelicans soar.

When we were first married, we often spent our Saturdays and Sundays just sitting by the ocean and enjoying the beautiful place that we were privileged to live for the first year of our marriage. Our times down by the water today brought back so many happy memories. Our lives in 1972 were simple, uncomplicated and peaceful.
