Great Lakes Adventure

When we were first married I promised to take my wife to Niagara Falls. The generator on our VW broke, and then somehow we never got around to it. So now I’m making good on my promise. She will see Niagara Falls and a whole lot more. Baca selengkapnya
  • The Mother of all Cook-outs

    4 Agustus 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

On this sea-day (lake day?) we have no excursions planned, so the Viking Polaris crew treated us to a cook-out on the open area of deck 6. So while we are snailing our way through the Welland Locks the crew is feeding us.

    Again.

The T-bones are an inch and a half thick, and the whitefish is just as good. Both are served with a little tub of chimichurri sauce that is mouth-watering. And if you don’t specify a different beverage, they serve you lemonade. We met Greg and Colleen from New York. He was also a Chinese-Mandarin student at DLI in Monterey a few years after me. Good food and good friends. What could be better!

  • The Hangar Deck

    4 Agustus 2023, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

On this relaxed day there is time for the crew to show us all the toys. The Hangar Deck is open and I went down to get up close and personal with the boats we have been enjoying for the last two weeks.

First, though, we passed through the Science Center, where some of the scientists onboard explained their work. A special optical analyzer pumps 100 liters of water each minute through its whizz-bang photo-analyzer to determine the amount of oxygen, phytoplankton and pollution contained in the water on which our ship cruises. Another station examines algae and other invertebrates. Some species have now come together into colonies, and they are producing poisonous waste products that are killing off other types of organisms that inhabit lower depths. The work of the oceanographers is as important here in the Great Lakes as it is in Antarctica.

Next we went down to the Hangar Deck to see the Special Operations Boats, the Zodiacs and our two submarines, George and Ringo. The Viking Octantis has John and Paul. And yes, each of these vessels is in fact a yellow submarine. I discussed with the boat commander the process by which these special boats can be dropped by parachute. It was a fascinating experience to discuss with them the safety features employed when these boats are being used. For example, a dive boat accompanies every submarine deployment, and there is also an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) available to assist the subs. It is essentially a tethered robot that can perform a multitude of tasks outside the sub if an endangered vessel should ever need them.

Our time here on the Viking Polaris is quickly coming to an end. Tomorrow we will be taken to the Toronto Airport for our flight home. However, our cruise aboard this expedition ship has been one of the most interesting we have ever done.

  • Wrapping Up

    5 Agustus 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

On this Saturday we had to be out of our stateroom by 8 am, and off the ship by 8:30. Several guests, including us, have flights leaving Toronto later this afternoon. So Viking kindly arranged an included bus tour of the city, ending with a trip to the airport. Our guide was native Chinese, and let’s just say that his English was difficult to understand. Several of us fell asleep on the bus. The first place he took us was a downtown park next to the old city hall. Under ordinary circumstances the park would have been quite nice amid the gleaming new skyscrapers of Toronto. However, last night an Indian festival ended, and the city workers have not had time to clean the park. It was an unfortunate beginning of our visit to Toronto. Things improved quickly though when we arrived at an old distillery now converted into a lovely neighborhood of boutiques and shops. We found a coffee shop where I ordered with my coffee a magnificent lemon tart. We finally made it to the airport, where our Global Entry cards allowed us to breeze through the TSA and customs inspections. So now we wait at a taqueria inside the airport. I had a pretty good burrito drenched in hot sauce and Glenda got a little quesadilla dish. Next stop: Charlotte, and then home—the best place in the world.Baca selengkapnya
