• Chasing elusive perfection

    August 6 in Sweden ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

We had the very clear bones of a plan today, which we had discussed last night. It involved starting with a sauna at our campsite before moving on to another campsite just near where we had walked the other day and enjoying a wood fired hot tub at the sea, possibly with some more fish and chips. As I said, it was the bones of a plan but one thing we were all sure about, and were in full agreement on, was that we would start with a sauna.
We awoke to some light rain, much less than there had been yesterday, and pottered about a bit, doing some work, organising cupboards that have been progressively untidier, and in the twins case, keep sleeping. Once we were all awake, one thing was certain, there would be no sauna today. Phone calls were made, weather forecasts were checked, future plans were considered and we decided that as lovely as our original plans may be, there were even better options if we just headed a bit further down the road, not too far, but just enough to make a start on our journey south. One of the problems we have when on the road and being so flexible with our plans is that we are always on the hunt for perfection when we should stop to realise that wherever we are is perfection.
So it was destination Kramfors today, although the probability of rain was going to be with us for most of it. It was not a very long drive, only an hour or so, and we had to pick up a few things from a shop so luckily we found a Coop. I always go in thinking we just need a couple of things but €50 later we walk out with a selection from the amazing choices they have, with some things we actually even need. We got to our campsite and got a very nice spot next to the water, just as we arrived there was a massive crack of thunder and when parking the heavens opened and there was an absolute deluge. We sat in the van and ate our lunch watching the rain on the lake.
That has pretty much been the state of the afternoon, any time we thought it may be easing up another downpour arrived. We have also reached that point where after two weeks on the road and two days being trapped by the rain that things feel a little difficult. Things get damp and can’t be dried, the disorganisation grows as things get stuffed into cupboards after being used, and being confined means we need to dance around each other to move from one part of the van to another. Food preparation also takes a lower priority due to awkwardness. In the beginning, it’s all salads and fresh vegetables, tonight it was a case of throwing 4 random ingredients into a pan, one of which was gravy, and serving it all up with instant mash. It was bloody tasty to be fair, but not exactly gourmet.
Enough of the moaning though, we still manage to have a good old laugh, both at the situation and at various things that just happen in the day, or something the crazy tvillegar do or say. This is just what perfection looks like today.
