Where we’re going, we don’t need Rhodes

A tasty breakfast in bed was a lovely start to the day (and the week). We had come up with a bit of a plan for the day and so we needed to get the girls out of bed, they weren’t happy as they feel we had promised them there would be no early wake up. Olivia especially was not happy and it took her a while to get out of bed, we did not make our estimated departure time.
We did get out at a reasonable hour though as we had a bit of a drive across the island, they weren’t happy with some long and winding Rhodes. We were off to see the acropolis of Lindos, another ancient site on the island, although this one is more well known than where we went yesterday. We are certainly getting our share of culture while we are here. The drive was over an hour and there was quite a bit of traffic on the coastal road but we got there soon enough.
As an important site on an island overrun with tourists it was fairly obviously going to be very busy and this was the case, although we did manage to find a car park easily. It was still a bit of a walk to the site so we joined the throngs on our pilgrimage, first of all we had to negotiate the narrow alleys of the town, they weren’t happy filled with an endless selection of restaurants, tourist tat shops and overpriced upmarket tourist boutiques. I started to have a feeling that we were in the wrong sort of place when I saw a Blanc du Nil. This is a French shop that sells linen clothing, all of which is white. These are dotted throughout France in the chic-est tourist traps, we have seen many but never been in one. So I was a bit concerned about what we were getting into.
It was a bit of a walk in the heat, and I don’t know why but these things always seem to be on the top of a hill, so it was hard work but we made it to the queue, only to have a particularly disgruntled looking tourist loudly announce as he was leaving that we should all prepare to waste €20. We paid and in we went, I have to say that I could not agree with his assessment. It was an amazing spot with incredible views, all the big yachts were moored in the bay below. The acropolis itself was perched on the edge of a cliff but it’s ok, there was a flimsy rope stopping people getting too close to the edge. It was being roundly ignored by everyone as the temptation for a selfie was just too great. At one point I contemplated standing on the wall for a photo and just the thought of it had my Naxos tingling. We wandered around, there were a couple of large cranes among the ruins, it really is amazing the technology of those ancient Greeks. We certainly feel like we got our money’s worth and left feeling extremely gruntled. We headed back through the alleys and as Ruby had seen a skirt she liked on the way up, in a shop leaning more to upmarket boutique than tourist tat, we stopped to buy this for her, at the same time as buying her love, for today at least.
Back in the car we drove back up the coastal road and found a very random and out of the way bakery that had just enough pastries to feed the six of us, perfection. Then it was off to a beach with a selection of watersports as Tate had expressed an interest in doing some jetskiing. We found a place but overall the girls’ enthusiasm seemed to have waned a little and they were even saying we should just go home. They were a bit concerned because you needed to be 18 to ride one. So we asked the dude about this and he did confirm that this was the requirement but also helpfully pointed out that once you were out to sea he wouldn’t be able to see what you were up to anyway. So we told him that Lily and Ruby were both 18, slipped him some cash, and two jetskis were at our disposal. Lily went off with Tate and Ruby was with Allegra. Once out to sea we certainly couldn’t see what they were up to and had to wait for their return to hear the details. It turns out that Lily felt quite anxious about it, she was happy enough going about 15kmh but when they swapped riders Olivia proudly informed us she went up to 33kmh. She is a daredevil like Ruby, who was also zipping across the waves at a fair old speed, so much so that at one point Allegra couldn’t hold on any longer, lost her grip, and ended up somehow falling off the side and into the water, getting a bit disoriented in the process. For different reasons, all of them were full of beans when they returned to shore.
After that it was time to head home, with just a quick stop for a refreshing drink. By the time we got home I had had enough of driving for the day, it was too hit and too much concentration is needed. But a nice refreshing dip in the pool certainly helped. Not much to report on the evening, there was a bit of work, a bit of lazing and a very lazy dinner before sitting down to write this blog.En savoir plus

Running out of Rhodes

The start of today was much like the start of yesterday, we had to get the girls out of bed to get moving. Not Ruby though, when I went downstairs she was sitting in almost exactly the same spot in almost exactly the same clothes as she was when I went to bed last night. Not sure what happened there. But for some reason the getting ready part did not run as smoothly, I think we were at least 3 minutes later getting out the door.
Today we were heading for old town Rhodes so the girls were harmonising a bit of Little Nas X in the back, something about taking their horses to the old town, and then they carried on with whatever bopping tune came next. It was music to my ears. It is s bit of a drive to the old town and we went through some different parts of Rhodes we haven’t seen before, none of which was worth any detour. We parked the car near the port and walked the final part , discussing how disgusting cruise ships are, depositing 5000 people or more in a town for a day. I guess each to their own but not for us.
Our first stop for the day, after making it past the hordes of men trying to entice us to eat or drink in their restaurants, was a Photo Booth that Lily had found. Never mind the fact that we all have phones and can take any photo of ourselves that we want, let’s all cram into a very hot, dark booth and pay €4 for the privilege of a machine taking our pictures for us. But that was fairly easy and it was then time for us to roam the old town. Funnily enough, roaming the old town of Rhodes was very similar to roaming so many other towns, shop, restaurant, shop etc. There was almost no way to tell that we were in Rhodes, we could have been anywhere. We did need to pick up some gifts though, Greek evil eye stuff, wooden penis bottle openers, that sort of thing.
Once that was taken care of, we left old town Rhodes and ended up in regular town Rhodes, the shops changed from tourist to regular high street, we needed to get some food. That was fairly simple too, but then our goal was the Throne of Helios. This was Jess’s idea, and it was very possibly the most un-Jess idea any of us have ever experienced. It was a 9D experience, the first in Europe,, which involved a bit of a ‘museum’ of the history of Rhodes and a film, in 9D. We were not sure what all the D’s would be but were keen to find out. The brochure seemed to suggest that scent, wind and rain were dimensions so we were very curious, no matter how hard we tried we could only come up with eight. We watched the film, which was a bit of a story of the myth of how Rhodes was created and then the history of the island so it was quite interesting, but still we hadn’t worked out what the final ‘D’ was. We were in our seats, being moved up, down, around, all over the place. Water was sprayed on us, something was hitting the back of our legs, bubbles were blowing around, smoke was blowing but still no… ah there it was, of course. The 9th D was the finger up the bum, not entirely sure how that fitted into the whole thing but I guess it was an experience.
We were starting to feel a bit weary and needed to head back in the general direction of our car, but we were also searching for a little oasis to get a drink. On the way we got attracted to a jewellery shop and got chatting with the owner who was obviously very good at what she does and managed to entice us in and had all the girls trying things on. We managed to escape with just a ring for Lily and a bracelet for Allegra. Surprisingly enough, after that we did manage to find an oasis and sat down under some trees to have a smoothie, a rainbow cocktail or a 7up zero, to Ruby’s immense disappointment as she really wanted a Sprite.
Back to the car and our drive home with the usual stop at a supermarket for dinner necessities. We got home and it was a bit of work for me and then Jess whipped up an absolute gourmet Greek meal, it was so good I think she should open up a little taverna. Now I am writing today’s blog but keep getting distracted by that romcom classic ‘27 dresses’ which most of us are watching, although Lily and Allegra have managed to tear themselves away and gone to bed. I think that I will be following, as soon as I have seen the happy ending of course.En savoir plus

Ain’t no valley low enough

Our last full day on holiday today and since we have been pretty busy since we have been in Rhodes we decided that we weren’t going to get up to too much. This was music to Tate’s ears and she took this to mean that she could sleep until the afternoon. The rest of us were up reasonably early, I was doing some work in between jumping into the pool to cool off, Jess was also doing a bit of work and the other three girls were sort of milling about. Unusually for our family, everyone was waiting around for me to finish work before we could head out, normally we are waiting for Jess. But eventually I got what I needed to do done and we could head off.
As I said, not too much was going on today, we were heading for place called butterfly valley. The name is very descriptive and gives an accurate description of what we could expect. Once we arrived we needed to have a bit of food before carrying on and we grabbed a bit of a snack to keep us going. Tate had a bit of a sore tummy but managed to polish off a cheeseburger, the rest of us had slightly smaller meals but equally tasty. Then we wandered off to the valley which I think must be quite a unique place on the island. For a start there was a small stream/river running through and while I have seen plenty of dry river beds on our trip, there has not been much inland water. It was a very calm walk up and back to see the Jersey Tiger Moth butterfly in a natural habitat. It turns out that they spend 4 months a year in the valley which they use as a breeding ground, so essentially they come to Rhodes every summer for sex. We saw plenty of butterflies and there were two of my favourite things in the valley, awesome trees and waterfalls. And I got to walk through it with my five favourite people. It was a cool way to spend our last day. We had a fairly standard ice cream to wrap up the day out.
Back at home it was time for some cooling off in the pool and some general relaxing, although for Jess this meant about 40 minutes swimming in the pool. We had to decide on a last meal out, was it to be a drive down to the beachfront or a stroll to the village? The local village won out and we are pretty happy it did.
The location was the same as last time, under the ficus tree, although we went with a different taverna, again a decision we were fairly happy with. We were all fairly unanimous that the food was some of the best we have had across our two trips to Greece. The meals were so good that we decided to go for a dessert, and the moans of appreciation for the orange pie were a good indication of the appreciation we felt. It was just a lovely meal in a beautiful setting and we were all feeling pretty relaxed. When paying the bill I was chatting with the owner and complementing the food and he told me it was all made by his mother and sister and they offered us cooking lessons if we come back next year. We may well take them up on their offer.
A last round of beer and biscuits, everyone’s favourite game, and a bit of reminiscing on the best bits of our holiday while writing vlogs and feeling bloated. An early start tomorrow, not for a good reason, so I will probably have to leave it there.En savoir plus

VoyageurVery sad that your wonderful trip is coming to an end. I will have to resort to revisiting last year's! It's been brilliant to keep up with you all - thanks for all the descriptions, the photos and the puns.

VoyageurCan't believe I'm sad about the end of a holiday I didn't even go on! 😥🤣 Thanks for the excellent reportage that has kept me both informed and entertained these last few weeks - and all the pics of you gorgeous lot! Safe travels! Xx

Hit the Rhodes, Jack

Sadly all good things must come to an end, which includes this blog. That’s right, it’s our last day, which does not include much more than getting packed, getting to the airport, and getting our plane back to Paris. The first part of this all went very smoothly but just as we arrived at the airport I had a notification to let me know that our plane was delayed by an hour. Shortly after that another 20 minutes was added on. Slightly annoying, as this meant waiting at the airport for close to four hours. It was also very busy and there were not many seats around, certainly not for a group of six. So one of us had the genius idea to scan the departure boards to see what flights were leaving next, as this would obviously mean seats would be freed up. It was a Finnair flight so we loitered in the vicinity and when boarding was announced and we saw a group starting to rise we swooped, almost in their seats before they had moved, never have graves been jumped into so quickly.
After that there was not much to do but wait and have some crappy airport food. We decided against stocking up with smokes, booze and perfume from the duty free shops. When it was finally time to board we joined the queue, then had to wait ages while we waited for a bus to take us to our plane, which was literally 50 metres away. Then we sat in the plane for a bit and I think it was another 30 minutes added on to our departure time. So not the best start to the journey, hopefully the Paris transport situation will work a bit smoother.
But as I sit here on the plane unable to complete a sudoku, I have time to reflect on a trip that started in Paris, took in Amsterdam, and then some Greek islands. I think that the travelling life suits us as we love to discover new places and get to know them. I think the island life really suits us because the pace is slower and we just get to hang out and enjoy being together, and despite the heat a beach or a beer are never too far away. To rate the places we have visited I would say that Amsterdam I can take or leave, and to be honest that feels very separate from the rest of the trip, but Tate did love the Stray Kids concert. Santorini is very pretty in the villages and they are very obviously Greek with their white buildings and blue roofs, but actually the rest of the island is very rugged. Naxos was pretty cool and had awesome sunsets, Ikaria was much less touristy and so had a very different feel, one that suited me. Lipsi was my favourite, it was just so small we could walk everywhere we wanted to go, Kalymnos was my least favourite as it just felt rough, although when we got to the right spot we had an awesome day on the sea. Finally Rhodes, which lent itself well to puns but was very touristy but where we stayed we managed to escape all that. Having a little pool there made us less beach reliant so we could get our share of culture instead.
As I like to do, I will now include in no particular order at all a series of random thoughts/memories of our almost 4 week break. There were 6 very different islands, 6 very different accommodations, 6 of us all together, beaches galore, crystal clear water, tavernas, tavernas, tavernas, beautiful food, poor puns, repetitive jokes, melancholy sighs, beer and biscuits. Ruby’s awesomely long and detailed blogs, her secret guest writers, Euro 25 glory, family arguments, family laughter, Tate sleeping whenever she can, beach makeup, girls sharing clothes, the suncream routine, toilet paper in the bin, shit sharp, interchangeable tourist hotspots, freddo cappuccino, Alfa beer, too much plastic, not enough recycling, hot days, cold showers, that’s what she said, jet skiing, Allegra falling off, seeking a yak, cliff jumps, scuba diving, loads of Australians, 5 periods at once, the Hamilton brothers - Lewis and Alexander, everything being related back to F1, friendly waiters, slow moving waiters, flirting with with waiters, dodgy cars on dodgy roads, nary a cloud to be seen, amazing sunsets, the twins tanning, butterflies, giant grasshoppers, endless cats, a three legged cat, Greek yoghurt, feta cheese, cheese pies, Greek salads, pasta salads, selfies and 0.5s, my amazing family, my beautiful family, Jess keeping us positive and getting us to do new things, Jess zoning out occasionally, Leon’s getting larger, Ruby loves to pose, Lily loves to vent, be careful what you say to Allegra, Tate being chill, driving over Ruby’s phone, long travel days, ferries, no Ed, the caged tiger, living in the moment, loving every day. I could go on but would probably just be repeating myself.
So our adventure comes to an end, it has been everything we wanted it to be, even if at times the girls may slightly disagree, that is the problem with children getting older. But i wouldn’t change a thing, who knows if we will get to have time like this again. Every part of me hopes that we do, I guess we will just have to wait and see. Antio Hellas.En savoir plus

Tate’s boppin’ blog

What’s good gang?
I’m gonna write a recap of the holidays.
So let’s start with Amsterdam, IT WAS FUCKING FIRE!!!! Like I was on fire, it was on fire, leg was on fire, the entire huzz were on fire, like it was slapping. Because we went to a Straykids concert and when I’m telling you that it was literally the best night of my entire life I’m not lying, it was just something else seeing them live and my little ( or not so little) man Han Jisung was sooooooooo fine like I died, and my other little men Lee Know, I.N., Felix, Hyunjin, Bangchan, Changbin and Seungmin were absolutely smashing and smashable the entire time like have you ever seen them on the big screen HUGEEEEEEE SMASHHH anyways so the concert was just something else. But the fun did not stop there oh no no no afterwards we went to a club slash bar but mostly bar and guess what music they were playing, yesurrrrrr it was KPOP and let me tell you they really whipped out all the bops, DJ was eating. So yeah now you might understand why it was the best night of my life, it was just unforgettable and amazing and I miss it so muchhhhhh. Now Greece was chill the views were stunning, the water was beautiful it was everything you’d expect Greece to be and more. I loved it even tho the gang were often arguing but you know what they say it wouldn’t be a family holiday unless mum, dad, Lily,Ruby and occasionally Allegra weren’t arguing every now and then. But yeah after the Straykids concert I had three big dreams:
-chill slash tan
-go jet skiing
-get tickets for straykids next possible concert (VIP with sound check)
So far two of them have been realised and I am waiting for Straykids to announce their next tour. All in all it was a slapping holliday and would recommend ooh also we had a little list that we stuck to the entire time:
-eat
-swim
-tan
-snack on boys
-smoking blunt serving ****
And that is all I have to say.
Psyched to have more travels.
I’m gonna be honest tho can’t wait to get back home cause I can see my Straykids light stickkk that I love so so much!!!
Love yousssEn savoir plus

Allegra’s banging recap

It’s time for my Greece 25’ 🇬🇷 recap, I feel like this trip was very different from the first one. But before I get into that I would like to talk about Amsterdam.
It was awesome, one of our best short trips, I read good books 📚 , walking around was fun and new and the STRAY KIDS CONCERT wasn’t bad I enjoyed it and it made Tate very happy which is 👍 .
I’ll also always remember the “club” we went to after the concert where we danced to K-pop which was soooo much fun!! 🎵 🎉
Anyway, Greece
We visited lots of beaches which I LOVED 🏖️🏝️, I could never get tired of beaches I love the sea 🌊
The food we ate was exquisite, Greek salads, souvlakis, gyros, cheese balls, ice cream, smoothies, baklava, orange pie… it was all so good.
I didn’t have one meal that I didn’t enjoy🍴😊
Visiting different islands was fun, I did get scared on travel days as I don’t like boats but that was the only problem. ⛴️
I JUST LOVED THE CONSTANT SWIMMING.🏊♀️
I also only got burnt once in the whole four weeks, just hand me a medal already🥇
What I loved most was spending time with my whole family, next year both of my big sisters will be moved out😔 , and though it’s a good thing because it will be different and fun, it’s still kinda sad so I will make the most of the time I get to spend with them.
SOOK MOMENT OVER. ❌
The worst thing was probably being thrown off a jetski 😤, WHEN I TELL YOU that I did a cartwheel to the side, got whiplash, hurt my ribs, did backwards rolliepollies in the water and my shoe nearly came off.
But hey, it was an experience 🤷♀️
Anyhow, I loved Greece and it was a vibe !! 😁🥰En savoir plus

VoyageurIt is good to get the details on the Jetski catastrophe. We definitely missed your voice (and Tates) on this trip. You were always in 3rd or 4th person. The Simpson experience is so unique we want reports from every angle. So please can we have at least one a month???

Greekbye

Welcome to the top of Mount Olympus where we realised that we were the G.O.A.T.s all along. (Yes roo I did steal your line best believe it)
Greece slipped away like a moment in time, a perfectly lengthed moment in time, and now it is back home with a quick pit stop in my lovely home in Paris which I had honestly missed so much and despite all the annoying people (and of course the numerous parisiens lol) I am actually so happy to be back home.
Now onto the Greekap.
Greece started off like tourists and ended like tourists in that for one we were tourists from beginning to end and for two the first and last places we visited were probably the most touristy.
Let us begin the island by island Greekap.
Santorini: Twas very cool and home to one of my top three moments; when we walked illegally past the barrier to that little cove and then jumped off the 8 metres high rock. It also finally allowed me to fulfil my white girl dream spawned by The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants of visiting a movie like Greek town. And we actually got to sit on our roof which was a bucket list moment for me.
Naxos: honestly my least fav mostly due to the people living below us who were s c a m m i n g us and who gave me nightmares and barred me from using the pool. The Apollo temple was cool and the beaches were very paradisical.
Ikaria: honestly a smash ig and Seychelles beach was gorgeous. Also Roo lost her phone here which was funny to me. Aside from that I can’t remember what else we did I feel like it was just all beaches and hot weather. The thermal pool was freaky in a good way though.
Lipsi: the one place we didn’t have a car and yet despite that we still didn’t get atvs (through no fault of ours the island simply didn’t have any). This place has kind of melded into Ikaria to me as all we did here was also beaches and hot weather. Did get to watch my first F1 GP here though which was actually very interesting and I loved it.
Kalymnos: we had an absolutely bopping ginourmous house which was def plus we had a beach just next door. We got up to see the sunset which was a flop and it was where I discovered the delicious creation that is a Freddo cappuccino. I guess my grandparents had it right.
Rhodes: it lent its name to many a pun especially from mine and my father’s shared brain cell (thank you Ruby for the best line you ever wrote). It also had a pool which I took full advantage of and a tv which served to watch yet another GP. We also finally got some Greek culture in and visited some cool sites as well as buying me my gorgeous ring (shout out to the best parents).
All in all Greek was pretty bopping but there is one memory that will always stand out: the one of a bald guy who had permanent sunglasses tan. Twas hilarious. Twas iconic.
On to the next adventure and also apologies for never finishing my Ireland blog.

Final thoughts from Jessica…

I love going away with the girls on mini adventures like this as there are no other times in our lives that we are just hanging out like this. It may also be the last holiday with all of us as Lily and Ruby get older and too cool to hang out with their parents. But at the moment they still seem to want to hang out with us so we will take all we can get. I love seeing them all together as well and how they all get on and how much love they have for each other. Yes they argue and make jokes about each other and get annoyed with each other but most of the time they just really like and love each other. This is very special for me. I love being so intensely together all the time that I notice their little traits and the things that make them so amazing in my eyes. Olivia’s kind and diplomatic heart as well as her dance moves and comedic style. Olivia is the calm in the storm but will also not take unfairness and if Olivia is upset you know you’re in the wrong. Lily’s unique style and exceptional make up skills and her fiery temper and loving nature and the way she always says a little hello mummy on a regular basis just to make sure I know she is there and of course her amazing Casswell genes cooking abilities and the fact she is not a morning person if woken up in some annoying way. Allegra’s strong character and exceptional timing and comedy style. She made us all laugh and also a little scared at times if she was not in the best mood. But she would always have a smile for everyone. Ruby loves to sing and dance and thinks we don’t love her dancing style when we do and we also love her singing. In fact me and Paul look forward to our daily concert of guitar and piano covers of Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams songs and we are going to miss this very much when she moves to Paris. And of course it would not be justified to not mention the amazing writing skills. This trip has been a special one with both me and Paul consciously trying to be more present in life (living in the now). So you notice more and worry less and this has been one of the best as a result. From a young age we traveled with them and this has paid off as we are so comfortable together as a result in any space, situation and setting. If I had my way we would be nomads all day everyday, but life moves forward and they will move on to have their own adventures and although I will miss them greatly I am soooo proud of who they are and are becoming as they amaze me everyday. But I hope they keep travelling with us for years to come and here’s to our next adventure in 2026 which they have all agreed to as a 50th birthday present for me. Watch this space xxx. Paul is also amazing in that he organised all of this. The accommodation, cars, ferries and made this all happen so smoothly. I know in the blogs he makes out like it’s me doing everything but this is not the case. He also keeps a smile on our face with his comedy and sarcasm. There is clearly so much love from Paul for all of us everyday and we are very very lucky to have this in our lives, so thank you Pavlos for making this life a reality for our family. We love you loads.En savoir plus

VoyageurEverything you say Jess is so evidently true. And yes, Paul is a great contributor but it is your vision driving this.

A Greequel from Ruby

Welcome one, welcome all, back to Mount Olympus, may you catch the goats that roam freely through life’s path.
For the last time.
Better get a-catchin’! Your time is running out… you know what they say about all the time in the world…
Dad told me not to write a Greecap, as I so wittily named them last year, since I had already written a whole blog. I publicly agreed that this was for the best, but secretly I felt very left out.
All of my secrets come out in this blog guys. It must be the false sense of distance created by a screen.
So I decided to write one anyway! I could have done an airport day blog, but it was fairly chill as a whole and I am a very proud member of the Procrasti-nation so there is really only so much I can do.
Welcome, to Greecap: the Greequel!
(I just laughed for a minute over my top tier naming skills).
It feels like an age since I woke up my sisters, singing “Ey, It’s The Holiday”, accompanied by Lil Nas X. Longer still since I laughed at the station name “Hoofddorp” in Amsterdam, despite the latter happening after the former.
I suppose that’s a testament to my lack of comprehension of time- something that has been troubling me for a year. (Or more? Who knows, not me!)
Amsterdam was awesome, I liked the concert honestly, but no one in that whole arena loved it as much as Tate did, which made it all worth it. The first of many family dance circles happened in Amsterdam, and it was a very peaceful place that I would like to live in someday, I think. However, of all the many things that I could list as the most memorable thing to come out of that trip, I would have to say, “Dyslexics, Nil” which is something we have used on the regular during this trip as soon as someone misspells or misreads something.
Tis the small things really.
Tate would disagree. For her it’s the big, Johan Cruyff Arena sized things.
An Eight Minute Power Nap later, we were back in Paris, and with No Small Amount Of Difficulty, we made it to Greece one day later.
I secretly love travel days.
Santorini was sort of a fabulous mess. It was stereotypical towns, filled with activity and life, contrasted with empty lands, and then full beaches and rugged mountains. One might say it was Random But Decidedly Banging. This was the first time I had a Guest Star on my blog, and I love both of the guest starrers for their help.
In all seriousness, I really did love Santorini and the quiet comfort of sitting on a rooftop as the sun sets, writing the blog and feeling the happiness that comes with the first biscuit times - now biscuit and beer - of the trip.
And, as we all know, I Am A Very Delicate Noble Flower, (and a god teehee) so if I like something, it’s that it was good.
Onto Naxos! (I feel like my Greecap: the Greequel is too long, but Once Again, I Am A God, at least I am in the world of my blog, so I can do what I like, and why ruin a good thing?)
Naxos was a rather nice place, if the shared house was perturbing. I made my peace with it, and I lived visiting the first two temples of the trip (Apollo and Demeter). I wonder if I will ever come back, to Naxos, to Greece. Maybe in Five Years Time.
Bros and foes, I am having a hard time adding some of these blog titles in understandable ways, so, let me pretend these ones were cleverly snuck in: This Is Grate! Modern Art. Cluck Cluck.
I know, I know, no one is smarter and sneakier in their writing than me. No need to applaud. Oh, well, if you insist. I do love to take a bow.
Anyway. I think I’ve gone mad.
Onto Ikaria! Which I thought was spelled Icaria, but I guess not. The second guest star, and no one could Spot The Difference before it was too late. There’s no shame in that though, mum’s blog was hilarious, and honestly if I were reading someone’s blog and their mother wrote it one day, I don’t think I would ever dare to comment “hey is that your mum writing not you” if the thought even crossed my mind. So.
But Ikaria was nice, I remember sleeping in the front room with Allegra, reading Only the Brave with her, and feeling like we were in Star Wars because of the lights through the window. I remember the turtle beach, and how dad knocked over a pile of pasta in a supermarket and said “Don’t Put This In The Blog” but of course I did, and of course, the loss of a limb found on the modern teenager.
Oh yes. My phone. The “Crunch.” (that I didn’t hear) of its life leaving still echoes (metaphorically; I reiterate, I did not hear it) in my very soul.
You win some, you lose some, I suppose.
And then it was a Speed Run to Lipsi, which was a very nice island, the first and only where we didn’t have a car. I remember watching Hamilton, continuing that theme at the beach where we were Searchin For An Urchin, watching the Euro 2025, doing strange dances, Allegra’s love of Brioche Bread on the tourist boat, giant chess, and much more.
I could list further things, of course, but you have read the blog already and so know it all, and as we all know, my blog is a paragon of Some Very Not Repetitive Journalism.
Although I have made my peace with repeating myself. A Peace Treaty, If You Will, between my perfectionist self and my lazy self. The dichotomy of Ruby (Lily loves that word, even if she hates repetition).
Onto Kalymnos! Where we were stalked by Allegra’s cousin, aka That DAMN GINGER BOY, where our house was so big that dad kept joking that he couldn’t see us, and where we got up to the see the sunrise that we were never gonna see. The sponges, dad’s driving, scuba diving…
Also, another memorable moment was given to us by Allegra, not a day goes by when I haven’t wanted to say this to someone when they ask how far something is. Of course, I am talking about “280km, Off The Top Of My Head. Oh yes, when Allegra’s plane cleared the atmosphere.
And of course, Kalymnos was the home of a feeling that happens each year.
SALT AIR!!! AND THE RUST ON YOUR DOOR!!!
That’s right, the moment when you can sing the song “august ” by Taylor Swift as loud as you can and just be really happy!!!
And finally, the home of puns. The island of many paths, trails, I can’t think of another synonym, but you get the gist, Rhodes!!
Or as I like to say, James Rhodes?
You may be sprinking that these sprokes are not sprunny. Well, You May Be Sprite, You May Be Sprong, but we sprade them none the spress.
(This is getting ridiculous, don’t worry, I am well aware. I have lost a lot of self respect).
I think my favourite thing on this island was Kameiros, So Rachel Said To The Paleontologist (never not funny- thanks lil) as well as tossing Allegra off the jet ski and the moment of pure panic just thinking “Oh Hot Damn, Allegra’s Gone!” And of course, my amazing skirt was one of the best things to come out of this trip, eternal thanks to mum and dad for getting to for me.
Of course, in terms of Rhodes puns, it would be remiss to not mention the main pun, the full circle moment, when Lil Nas X came back into play, as we gleefully sang “Take My Horse To The Old Town Rhodes” as we headed for Old Town Rhodes.
It’s these bad comedy moments that I’ll miss.
To be fair, bad comedy follows me wherever I go! Tis my specialty!
And the final night was one of the best. Delicious food, lots of fun, and jokes. We laughed. And We Laughed Some More at biscuit and beer time.
Oh my god I feel a weight has just been lifted off my shoulders at that last blog title making it in (well, except for “Extra Photos”- oh, would you look at that!). I regret my choice to do that. But, as per the Ruby Rule of Regret: will I regret it in five years? No, so it was worth it.
In all seriousness, Greece was an amazing holiday and I ofc love spending time with my family, even if I would never be such a sook as to write it in the blog haha, good thing this is just in my inner thoughts.
Oh no! My fingers have betrayed me!
As I sit here, writing my blog, listening to Lost Americana on repeat, as Allegra reads and Olivia watches K pop and Lily watches F1, mum and dad working in sync, I feel very peaceful and strangely nostalgic, which I’m beginning to realise just means that I love life, and that I have many a memory worth keeping and holding close.
In the fanfiction that I am currently reading (which is really good, I swear fanfic gets a bad rap (I myself used to think it was stupid) but some of the best books I’ve ever read are fanfics), a question that they keep asking, the central question of the book, is “what makes you happy?”, which has lead to me speculating this a lot.
And I think this does.
And so this is where we end our trek up Mount Olympus, folks.
The world is our oyster. Go forth, children. Teehee.
Bye family!!! 🫶En savoir plus
