Warm up for the main event

    March 30, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

I was up early and away before the sun to drive to Ballarat. It took me a little while to find the start of the rail trail.. but I finally did and was under way just after 8 ...... and what a lovely ride, it was a cool and cloudy day .... no rain although the wind was annoying at times. The rail trail is really rather nice... it is quite pretty with some cutting's and bridges and the surface isn't bad ... compacted find gravel just a little soft in places with a resurfacing... some really lovely views. All up it was about 105km to Skipton and back and I can certainly highly recommended itRead more

  • Settling in ready for tomorrow

    March 31, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Off early to Great Western where the car was secured and the bike stiwed on a cattle truck. Fortunately my transport to Halls Gap was a comfortable coach. Set up and settled in by 1230 so there was time foe for a great 10km circuit to the pinnacle look out... just amazing views. A welcome event at the brewery to look forward to and then an early night before the challenge of the Victoria Valley climb tomorrow ....Read more

  • Talk about a headwind!

    April 1, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Daylight savings really added to the challenge getting ready for day one of riding..... imagine 1400 people packing up camp in the dark ... add in a pack of raucous school children and some really rather vexed kangaroos who, judging by the quantity of droppings, are used to using the area for night time grazing and were put out and bouncing around the place in consternation.... you can imagine the pandemonium! Despite all this I was on my way by just after 730. It was really rather a gorgeous run ...cool and mostly sunny although the wind was rather annoying ... quite strong and gusty and mostly a headwind. The route was really rather pleasant mostly quite nicely undulating but there was a couple quite brisk climbs although the views were well worth it. Into Dunkeld just before 12 and was quickly set up and able to relax in the plesent afternoon sunshine before a stroll down to the Main Street where I enjoyed a very nice beer and chat with a couple of fellow riders at the pub. Looking forward to tomorrow which should be a nice 110 km...
    with hopefully... fingers crossed ..
    a generous tail wind!

  • Apparently it's called a "Century Ride"

    April 2, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The generator and lights fire up at 5am, I am not sure why, but it's a tad annoying.. no way I was getting out of the cozy sleeping bag before 6am, eapecwhen it was only 8 degrees outside. Breakfast and pack up done and it was on bike by 730am with the chilly morning turning into a cool day, initially scattered clouds and sunny break, but it did cloud over by lunch time. It stayed dry all day but the wretched wind... rather tedious in some bits and only ever briefly of assistance (i.e. a tail wind). The ride was described as "undulating" and it was, gorgeous, long slow climbs and decents meaning the legs could just keep rolling over.. I was pleased to do the total 112km in just under 5 hours without any real effort. The countryside was mostly farmland and the rest stops were regular.. the last being at a winery 🍷 in Pomonal where a local ale was in order, then it was the final 12km to Hall Gap.. set up in short order and then off to the local brewery (Rock, Paper, Scissors) for a glass of stout and some work in the dreaded PHD. . looking forward to the "Great reveal" tonight when the next GVBR is announcedRead more

  • Done, dusted and signed up for the next

    April 3, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The change to daylight savings may have meant an hour's extra sleep... but no one told the truck drivers who started at 3:00 a.m. Nonetheless it was very pleasant to stay in the city tent until 6a.m. and then it was up pack up, breakfast and ready to roll by 730. It was a lovely 53km ride to Great Western through farmland on closed or quiet roads and I was rather pleased to do it in about 2hrs 20 even with the brisk head and cross winds. Great Western had little market and a chance to tour the champagne drives .. very interesting. Then it was time to find my gear and head home..... until the next one!Read more
