  • Day 24 Boquete

    9 mei 2023, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Breakfast, walk and school for 8am. Lesson was a little tricky today, but went to the Tuesday market in town and was great to talk to each stall holder and practice Spanish! Spoke with a guy for a while from San Blas who explained his indigenous craft work and how concepts of nature are told through hand stitched material art work. Also a lot of US stalls selling free bible classes?

Headed to a coffee Farm in the afternoon - beautiful spot really high up in the hills. guide Carlos had worked on the Farm when he was 10, and had spent his life working in different areas of the coffee trade - picking, packing, selling etc. He spent a lot of time saying how coffee farms won't last in Boquete because of 'gentrification' mainly by Western retirees. 70% of the countries coffee is grown here, but Farm land can be sold for a huge amount of money to build mult million dolor golf resorts and gated communities. (also apparently should never buy ground coffee as its mainly roasted rice/corn/twigs!) this guy didn't hold back from keeping it real 😅 had delicious wine-style coffee tasting to end.

Had a lovely evening talking with Maryans youngest son who is a big music and salsa fan so got to listen to lots of music recommendations!

No class this morning and a big sleep in instead - followed by a gorgeous 3 hour hike to 3 waterfalls ('Las Cascadas') about 30 mins out of town through windy mountain roads. Very steep trail (needed ropes to climb up most of it!) and managed to have a very refreshing dip in the last waterfall. A hummingbird joined for a bit too :) amazing birdsong everywhere, such a beautiful trail. Grabbed the bus back into town, quick drink and then dinner with the family and early nightMeer informatie

Another amazing afternoon in all things nature. Saw 2 queztal birds which apparently is super lucky for this time year- one with its tail sticking out the nest, and another flew right past. Colours incredible. Also a local guide pointed out a Zorzal solitario bird (the birdsong is amazing!), a 900 yr old tree, a puma cave, the world largest leafed plant and little sparrow nest. Back to town for a guanabana juice, followed by evening in teaching Amilcar monopoly deal and dinner all together 👌Meer informatie

  • Day 27 Boquete

A gorgeous day - Last lesson this morning, coffee and columbia reading in the square in town. Then went to get a 'collectivo' to an easy hike trail, but got the wrong bus and ended up at a much higher one! A happy mistake as it was lovely :) just did the beginning of the Pianista Trail through some fields, sat by a river with my book for a while before it started heavy raining. Hot chocolate and catch up in a river side restaurant, a long but lovely wait at the bus stop then back to the house for dinner with Maryan and DavidMeer informatie

Its a UNESCO protected city, with the old town made up of colourfulcrumbling but stunning buildings - movie set style. You could spends days just wondering round the streets. Had a little wonder and morning coffee, before a free city walking tour - v interesting, lots of info on colonial history, on the really blended music and dance culture here, and apparently lots of witch history too? Met a couple of people on the tour, grabbed some lunch at a deliiicious local spot. • Day 31 Caetagena/ Palenque

    16 mei 2023, Colombia ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

A very rainy and super interesting day! Went to a town called Palenque about an hour out of the city - it was the first 'free' town in Americas from slavery. Its fought continuously to keep the land, be able to keep cultural practices, religion etc. (defs worth looking up and reading about the history, too much to write here!) in the 70s it was being fought over between narcos/guerillas/govt (they made everyone shave their hair off during this time as women used to use hair braiding to remember and map out escape routes theyd seen in the offices during slavery!) There was a meeting between local indigenous groups today, where communities regularly come together to share ideas/share decision making etc. so there was a big performance in the main square. Also a very interesting chat with a natural medicine dr of the town. Back to cartagena past the main market of the city - really nice to see outside the walls and all the hustle and bustle. Also found out every sunday its tradition to have sound system salsa battles all over the country! Nap, dinner (ajilo soup 😋) and a good couple of hours spent in the evening in a local book shop with tea and chats with one of the workers about SA graphic novels 🤓Meer informatie

A morning walk out of the old city to check buses etc. then a gorgeous (and reeeally hot!) stroll around Getsemani - a neighbourhood now famous for its street art, with lots of artists from around the world now living in the area. There was a music video being filmed down one of the most pictured streets ('the street with the umbrellas'). Lots of fresh street side lemonade 😋 then after a refresh went for a champeta/salsa dance class! So much fun and never sweated so much in my life 😅 followed by delicious rice and beans in a local food joint, and guava ice cream yummMeer informatie

After about half an hour i was already dead 🥴 and out of nowhere a couple of the guys working at the beach came by on horses and offered to give me a lift :) life savers! So a really wonderful horse ride out talking about football with them in very bad spanish 😅 got a mototaxi for the rest of the way to Minca - a town about an hour away pretty high up in the mountains (temp went from about 38° to 23° bliss!) staying at a place called Nuevo Mundo, one of the most incredible places ive ever stayed. • Day 42 Minca to Mompox

    27 mei 2023, Colombia ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

A mission this morning to get the broken phone resolved! An incredibly kind Moto taxi driver took me Santa Marta, got a new phone and a snack en route, then to get the bus to Mompox. Not enough people for a bus, so me and a teeanger went in a pick up filled with broken motorbikes and all sorts of packages to drop of en route! After a lot of stops, a breakdown in the middle of nowhere, a mini ferry across the river and a police inspection - i arrived 8 hrs later in the most beautiful old town 😍 had a walk along the main street by the river which is lit by fairy lights, and residents sitting outside their houses on wooden rocking chairs. Already love this place!Meer informatie

  • Day 43 Mompox

    28 mei 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Oooh I love this place! Woke up to church bells followed by coffee and croissant by the river. Had a great walking tour with a local guy Manuel -
Slowly pottered around the streets and visited the 7 churches in the town, local wine tasting spots (Tamarind wine 👌). The town is also known for Filigriana (traditional very delicate silver jewellery making technique). Visited a cemetery, and ended chatting with a Filigriana selling jewellery outside called Gabriel. Sat with him and some other old boys with beers and some sketchy spanish! Then a gorgeous boat ride through the rivers surrounding the town - huge iguanas, beautiful birds, and yellow snake spotted. Sunset drink an the old market building by the river, then a lovely evening just pottering and sitting in squares. In the evenings everyone drags out wooden rocking chai nors into the streets and square and just chat - the town feels like one big cosy living room!Meer informatie

  • Day 44 Mompox

    29 mei 2023, Colombia ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Another great day! Bus to Sincelejo only once a day so means staying in Mompox for an extra day, which I'm very glad happened! Switch up of accomodation and staying in a crazy nice hotel in the old town. Spent most of the early afternoon pottering about, browsing book stalls in the market, then ended up going for a bike ride with a guy called Alonso out of the town and through some local farms. Ate mangoes from the tree, bird watched and played dominoes in a countryside shack bar with some ladz. Cycled through the outer town, back for a quick dip at the hotel then met Alonso - he's a musician and we're going to grab his guitar and play music in the square, it was pouring rain so grabbed a tuktuk to a nearby 'discoteque' instead. We had a ball! Only ones there but got taught all the local dance moves, finally ate the delicious garlic sauce (tartara) with a Columbian version of a cheese straw 🤤 Blown away by how incredibly hospitable and kind people are here. A real highlight of a dayMeer informatie

  • Day 46 Tolu to Isla Tintipan

    31 mei 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Early am boat from Tolu to Isla Tintipan - passed island of Santa Cruz which is tiny but the most densely populated island in the world! Made of stilt houses, a lot of concrete, a load of amazing graffiti and big sea 'pond' of sharks. I think there are spots on Isla Tintipan which are really gorgeous, but maybe the spot I'm in is a bit more of a rough round the edges side (I definitely think I may have been spoilt this trip - but there's a lot of dog 💩 eeeverywhere in the hotel!😅) Had a nice chill on a beach nearby, but then hit my toe on a tree stump which led to a boat ride over to Isla Santa Cruz, and a bit of a dramatic drs visit 🫣 but.. it did mean seeing Santa Cruz! And the staff were super helpful and kind. Hotel isn't great and not too easy to keep toe clean so will head back to Cartagena side a day early!Meer informatie
