First trip to 'the big island' with our Citroen Berlingo 'Ambie'. Leigh has custom fitted the cargo bay for storage and sleeping, and a 5 man tent will give us room for cooking, relaxing and hiding from poor weather &/or bitey insects! Leia mais

    Day 5-8 Wilson's Promontory

    Drove from Cowwarr to Wilson's Promontory in the afternoon.
    Weather was good for walking during our stay, but cloudy (low cloud covering peaks for first 2 days) and windy on & off. Average temp between 16 o'night and 19 in the day. Best day was when we left, and the sun came out! We slept in the tent, rather than the van, 'cos it was cooler and mossie proof.
    Day 1 - Walked a long loop from Tidal River along the Lilly Pilly Gully track, along the base of Mt Bishop (low cloud covering the peak, so bypassed the peak walk), to Tidal River lookout, Pillar Point, and back to the camp-site for lunch. After lunch we had an explore along the beach.
    Day 2 - we were on the Pennicott tour (2 hours) around the coast seeing seals, Sea Eagles, Cape Barron Geese and other marine birds. Found out Tassie waters start 10km offshore from Vic, so saw Tassie. Skull Island is an amazing formation. There was a 1-2m swell and wind - afternoon tour cancelled due to the increase in latter once we got back. And amphibian boats !
    Day 3 walked up Mt Oberon for fantastic views - wind chill factor at the top was significant. The track was 4 wheel drive due to the telecommunications towers up there. There's a short rocky path to the summit. Shuttle buses to the carpark at the weekends, so very glad we were here during the week. Still passed other walkers, but not rush hour traffic!
    Day 4 - Tried to walk to the wetlands on our way out to Melbourne, but the corrugations in the dirt road were so bad we gave up - and the road was only about 2km long 🙄.    Leia mais

    Day 9- 13 Melbourne at Steve & Fiona's

    Day 9
    Best weather day so far @ Wisons Prom as we left 😁 - Stopped off at Fish Creek for brunch and looked in at the Alison Lester bookshop. Couldn't resist a copy of 'The very noisy baby' lift the flap board book for the Fisher Jr family!
    2pm at Tooradin and we hit the conurbation of Melbourne - ran for Blackburn as fast as possible! Great to get to Steve and Fiona's and put our feet up with a cool drink.
    Day 10 -13
    Lovely few days catching up, hearing about the Ed Sheerin concert from Fiona, visiting St Helen Hills Winery, exploring around the Dandenong Hills and walking through outer Melbourne suburbs. Managed 16.8km from Blackburn to Camberwell return along the green corridors    Leia mais

    Day 26 Anglers Rest to Corryong

    The Omeo Highway is very narrow and windy - took from 9.30 to 12 to travel from Anglers Rest to Tallangatta. First view of the Murray River. Levels still up if the number of trees standing 1/4 of their trunk in water is any indication.
    Quick lunch and onto Corryong for the night after a side trip to a rail bridge & then Conic Hill for a short (but very up!) walk to a lookout back over Tallangatta and Lake Hume.    Leia mais

    Day 28 Thredbo to Cooma

    Keen to walk to the top of Mt Koscuioszko but the weather was terrible - low cloud and rain. Nothing to see so we did the Meadow walk and moved on to Cooma.
    Leigh keen to see the Coona railway Museum. It was much smaller that anticipated - we arrived 10 minutes before closing, but he had plenty of time to see all there was to see.
    New oilskin hat from downturn Cooma - Leigh's other sun hat made him feel a bit of a prat, so he upgraded. 😆    Leia mais

    Day 32 Tumut to Bungendore

    Could not avoid the major highways going across towards the coast due to flood damage/road closures. Had to go via Yass, into Canberra (looked down from the war memorial to parliament house very briefly!) and then via Murrenbatmen to Bungendore. Not pleasant driving, and thank goodness for Google maps for directions!Leia mais

    Day 33 Braidwood to Batemans Bay

    Braidwood was a complete surprise and a lovely town. Long morning tea stop with amazing coffee & pastries at the French Cafe!
    Up, down & round and round the mountains again to Batemans Bay (lovely beaches but leech ridden forest walk, very touristy)
    Forecast for rain so booked into a cabin (one room shared facilities basic but air-conditioning to cope with the humidity)    Leia mais

    Day 39 Red Hand Cave walk

    It's lovely staying with Doug Garnett & Michelle at Glenbrook - good company & great to catch up. Leigh and Doug take the dogs (Remi and Claude) for a walk each morning and talk non stop. Doug & Micelle working this week and flying off to the US on Friday 7th so Doug can meet his new grandson - Ashen - Zac's son.
    Also good to be staying in a house when it's raining outside! Showers on & off today    Leia mais

    Day 40 walked the Glenbrook ZigZag

    Slow start, with coffee and cake in Glenbrook, before walking along the old railway line, through the cutting, and onto the zigzag - where it started pouring with rain at the old Lucasville station. No wet weather gear - lucky it wasn't cold as we were very wet! Went cross country and ended up skirting the airfare base with 5m high wire fences & razor wire topLeia mais
