A lovely Home Exchange in Nerja

    3.–21. okt. 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

This relaxing visit to Nerja was a planned-on-the-fly interlude between the cruises that have bookended this trip. When we secured our Home Exchange we didn’t know that the first week of our stay in this beautiful Andalusian coastal village would coincide with its “feria,” an annual festival with live music, foot races for kids and adults, carnival rides, and much merry making.

It was fun to watch the marching bands go past our balcony and to admire the beautiful Andalusian dresses many women wore to the feria. And we loved it when our “Camigos,” Sergio and Inma, came up from Málaga to hang out with us on a Saturday night. We met them on the Camino Francés two years ago, saw them again last year in Málaga, and thoroughly enjoyed spending more time with them in Nerja, Frigiliana, and Málaga this year.

The weather during our stay was mostly great, and we often carried beach chairs and an umbrella down to one of the nearby beaches. On one of our beach days, we enjoyed watching a large pod of dolphins leaping from the calm-as-a-lake sea. A dolphin sighting makes any day better in my book.

We also enjoyed a terrific flamenco show at El Burro Blanco, had a great time visiting Las Cuevas de Nerja, and savored so many delicious dinners, lunches, and snacks around town, making repeat visits to Unico, La Puntilla, and La Gelateria de Piero.

Our three-unit apartment building had a shared fourth floor terrace where we enjoyed sunrise coffee a time or two, and played Rummikub or Scrabble when we wanted to enjoy a rooftop view. Our Home Exchange hosts, Miguel and Sara, were very sweet and always responsive, providing thoughtful recommendations for our stay.

We’re on a fast Ave train to Barcelona as I type this post, our time in Spain rapidly coming to a close. More about that next time.

  • A day in Frigiliana

    13. oktober 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We’d been meaning to make a day trip from Nerja to Frigiliana, so when Sergio and Inma suggested a Sunday outing there, we were ready to go.

Frigiliana is a “pueblo blanco” or white town, nestled high in the Sierra Almijara, with gorgeous views of the Costa del Sol.

Its beauty belies a bloody history of Roman conquest, Moorish rebellion, and Christian domination. Tiled panels providing snippets of the town’s history adorn the white walls on its steep alleys. Sergio has a strong interest in history, and provided excellent narration on our stroll through town and up a quiet backroad to the ruins of a Roman fort.

I didn’t take notes though, so here’s an excerpt from Andalucia.org outlining the town’s history: “on the 976-metre high El Fuerte hill, stands a location known as Frigiliana la Vieja, (Old Frigiliana), where remains of Roman fortifications, dwellings and coins dating back to imperial times have been found.

“However, it was not until Moslem times that the first real settlement appeared, with groups of houses being built and subsequently protected by an Arabic alcázar or fortress, thus providing the origins of the present-day village, which, by the 11th century, was known as Fixniana.

“In May 1487, shortly after the fall of Velez Malaga into Christian hands, representatives of Frigiliana’s Moslem community paid homage to the Catholic Monarchs in an attempt to avoid reprisals and conserve some semblance of rights for the morisco (Moslem converts to Christianity) population.

“In 1501, the Catholic Monarchs ceded Frigiliana’s territory to a trusted Jew, Maymonn Levi, in return for services rendered to the Crown. Later, in 1508, it was incorporated into the estate of a Castilian nobleman, don Iñigo Manrique de Lara.

“Before long, the morisco rebellion which swept the whole of the Axarquia region, having originated in the Alpujarra region of Granada in the second half of the 16th century, was receiving strong support in the Frigiliana area: the difficult living conditions endured by inhabitants dominated by Christian troops created hostility which ended in open rebellion led by Martin Alguacil -a native of Competa- and Fernando El Darra.

“The moriscos established themselves at a castle in El Peñon de Frigiliana, El Fuerte, where they managed to repel the first battalions of the forces sent by the governor of Velez-Malaga, Arevalo de Zuarzo, in May 1569; it took reinforcements from Granada, supported by Don John of Austria, and over 2,400 rebel deaths to finally crush the uprising. The castle was razed the ground on the orders of the Commander of Castile, only ashes remaining.

“By 1570, the expulsion process which banished the moriscos form the AREA was complete; their confiscated land was redistributed among Old Christians, primarily from Granada and Valencia.”

  • A day in Málaga

    16. oktober 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

A rainy Wednesday morning gave way to clear skies as Sergio and Inma showed us some of their favorite spots in Málaga’s historic center.

We strolled through pedestrian streets, popped into quiet churches, ventured through the bustling market where many of the vendors remembered Sergio from the long ago years when he worked there in his father’s vegetable stand. From the market we headed to La Bodeguita, a nearby bar where you buy drinks on one side and seafood snacks on the other. After enjoying “cañas” of beer and slurping raw mollusks from their shells, we strolled a few more blocks to have lunch at La Deriva…where we feasted until full.

After that late, leisurely lunch, we strolled some more, finding our way to a recently reopened historic bar where we enjoyed gin and tonics before being escorted to our bus stop…where Sergio and Inma hovered like worried parents until they witnessed our boarding the right bus. It was a rather chaotic scene, and we thought they’d left and were touched by their kindness when they popped to wave an unexpected final goodbye. Amigos del alma, they truly are!

  • Two nights in Barcelona

    22.–24. okt. 2024, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Barcelona’s big city grittiness was a bit of a shock to our systems after spending so much time in Nerja and Málaga, where life seems to move at a more relaxed pace.

That said, we enjoyed our time here, especially a morning visit to the Maritime Museum and the nearby Maregnum Shopping Center, where we gazed at mega yachts while rehydrating at a rooftop bar.

We boarded the Oasis of the Seas this afternoon for our trip home to Florida. We’ll be stopping in Palma de Mallorcas, Cartagena, Valencia, Malaga, and Nassau en route. More about that next time.
