  • New Touring Bike! ❤️

    June 8, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

I ordered a new steel touring bike. Yay! It’s a 52cm Salsa Marrakesh. I got it from Nick’s Cycling and Fitness in Burlington, Iowa. More on this to come, as I have not picked it up yet. I am not sure where I’ll fit it in the garage, but that’s a good problem. 😉Read more

  • Our life is a bike tour every day!

    June 9, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Lisa and I decided we need to pretend every day is like a bicycle tour. We rode about 30 miles before 8 AM and stopped for an iced coffee and pastries at the Java house near our house. Of course we are missing the bakeries in Europe, and the US prices are ridiculous! 👎🏻Read more

  • 40 miles in the Morning

    June 10, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Lisa and I did a nice loop through West Liberty in the early morning. It was foggy for the first part, but the sun broke through as we rode the stiff headwind home. We saw The Statue of West Liberty!

  • Artifact Hunting with Sebastian

    June 10, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We went searching for Native American artifacts 35 minutes south of Iowa City toward Riverside, Iowa on the ridge above the Iowa River. We trounced through the muddy corn rows finding a lot of flakes of chert, and Sebastian found two really nice pieces (seen with the coin.) We missed videoing the finds as he did think at first they were artifacts. It was chilly and we got rained on a bit. Fun times!Read more

  • “Res. Loop” part 1

    June 11, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Our favorite 20 mile loop is over the Coralville Lake Damn. The ride has a nice gradual climb to the big Buddah and old barn. It continues to a nice scenic view to the south and past a cute cottage style house. We then reach the 1/2 way point just after passing over the resivoir. We have nice downnhill past the “Dump Trump” sign...(see part 2)Read more

After our morning ride and some yard work we headed back to the cornfields to look for more arrowheads*. Lisa had two great finds and I’ll include one video in this post and put the other in another post soon. It was a hot day, but definitely worth it!
*I say “arrowheads”, but mean any Native American artifact.

  • Haystack 70

    June 13, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

7:15 AM we picked up Pat to drive to the Millstream Brewery in the Amana Colonies. We met Craig and Matt and started riding at 8:00 AM. Our first stop was after two blocks at the Amana bakery. We then rode 37 mile of mainly gravel to Chelsea, Iowa. We stopped every five miles or less for Pat to add air to his rear tire. Also, we had about six water crossings in route to Chelsea. A great tailwind made the morning ride delightful! After lunch (Haystack Burgers*) and beers in Chelsea we took a more direct route of more pavement back to the Millstream brewery. The headwind made for some tough riding, but we reaped the rewards of cold brews at the end! 70 miles of fun with friends.
*A hamburger smothered with mozzarell and sauerkraut.

Another day around home. Sebastian went to his running workout at 7:30 AM and then worked pulling the invasive plant, Garlic Mustard at a farm near Iowa City. Lisa and I did a 20 mile casual ride around town. I made some bread using my Russian rye sour dough start that has an interesting history. I’ll tell you that story in person sometime. 😀 The sidewalk chalk is from Sebastian’s friends who visited our house last night for a fire and hamburgers.Read more

As always, we ended with a 2nd breakfast on the porch of eggs and hashbrowns. 10 AM and we still have most of the day left!Read more

  • The Roads Less Traveled

    June 18, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

I put together a 42 mile route to the southeast through Downey, Iowa and West Liberty, IA. I tried to pick some roads I have never ridden and found some gems! Some B roads, a private C road, bike trails, gravel, a cemetery, a tour through the Muscatine County Fair Ground, and evening some cobbles. It was another beautiful morning and great ride.Read more

  • Father’s Day

    June 21, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

First Father’s Day without my dad. It’s a strange feeling. I enjoyed the morning drinking coffee out of a Farside mug I bought my dad years ago, “ The bluebird of happiness long absent from his life, Ned is visited by the chicken of depression.” 🤣 I sat on the porch listening to the birds. My dad loved goofy humor, all creatures, waking up before everyone else to sneak out for breakfast or donuts and the morning newspaper. When I got the mug I had to wash of layers of newsprint. 😉 Other pictures show Sebastian teaching me to Ripstick!Read more

  • Father’s Day Mississippi Ride.

    June 21, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A 23 mile ride exploring the Quad Cities with Sebastian and Lisa. I always keep the routes a surprise. We visited a friend’s brewery and bike shop, the Treehouse Restaurant, the grave of jazz musician Bix Breiderbecke, and crossed the Mississippi twice. A great family ride I named the Bix23.Read more

  • New Bike Day!

    June 22, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

We were greeted by a deer at breakfast eating our raspberries. I drove to Burlington (about 1.25 hrs) to pick up my new touring bike, a Salsa Marrakesh. Chris text right when I get home and we rode over the reservoir (22 miles) and got soaked! My new black and grey cycling clothing fit well. When I got home I did a 30 mile virtual ride on Zwift while Lisa was doing some Yoga on the screened in porch. Today would have been our first day home from the Rome to Barcelona tour.Read more

  • A Long Day

    June 23, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Beautiful ride with Lisa in the morning with a stop at the java house. Then we drove to Marshalltown to see my mom. We returned to Iowa City about 3:30 pm and I cut the grass. At 5:00 pm I did a 1.5 hour Zwift ride. After that it was to Ken’s to put the new bike together. A big disappointment because I misplaced the upper headset bearing. ☹️ Spent over an hour looking for it with no luck ( I found it in the road the next morning about 25 yards from were i was working on it!) Bike has bad mojo already, I will probably sell it. ☹️ We got it together, but a lot to do still to see if it fits. Pictures tomorrow.Read more

  • 23 Mile Gravel to West Branch

    June 24, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Beautiful clouds today and not too hot. The black berries are getting ripe on the Herbert Hover trail and the corn is getting high. Knee high by the 4th of July is so out dated. Sebastian is over for a couple days and then off to camp training. They are going to spend a bit more than a week practicing safety for the coronavirus and preparing for campers. The new bikes is almost together. A photo soon.Read more

  • Kalona 45 (Part 2)

    June 25, 2020 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

We had a hot tailwind pushing us toward Iowa City. The fields are lusciously green and a lot of business in the countryside. Not much traffic, but a lot a gardening. We stopped in Hills, Iowa for our blackberry dessert and a cold beverage. After our dessert we cruised the final 10 miles home. Always a great day together. ❤️🍺😀🚴🏻‍♂️🍕Read more
