    March 25, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

I'm raising money for a cancer charity chosen by Carole before her death in December 2023.
This is 97 miles in the West Highlands of Scotland.
The weather is currently set at gale force winds making walking arduous & snow.
So please help me enjoy this more by donating....

  • Gatwick ...

    March 25, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Not a great start, the Cambridge train before ours was cancelled so our Thameslink train took the slow every stop counts route & we missed our bag drop time - so no flight 🤦🏼‍♀️
Many hundreds of £££s later we're rebooked on Easyjet at lunchtime giving us time to chat to Ruch in duty free who plied us with quite a lot of tequila samples 😍🍸🍸🍸
Then breakfast & Bloody Mary... Feeling less stressed now.

  • First morning

    March 26, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Sadly my Achilles kicked off fairly immediately after the start so it's going to be a painful week with a lot of drug assistance 🤦🏼‍♀️
Lovely walking so far - few muddy puddles but nothing like my recent walks in SussexRead more

  • Lunch at Turnip the Beet

    March 26, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After the big build up along the route for several 100 m promising beer, food, coffee...The Beech Inn was closed much to the bitter disappointment of all those who kept turning up joyfully expectant. Luckily not too much further along the route we found the lovely cafe Turnip the Beet - hit the spot nicelyRead more

  • Fucked - on first night!

    March 26, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After our nice lunch the temperature had dropped a bit and we had the log slog on to Drymen

The lovely fella at front desk carried my bag to the room as there was no lift (no wonder they're the winners of Best Hotel Team in Scotland)

  • Setting off for day 2

    March 27, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ❄️ 3 °C

Fabulous dinner last night - haggis bonbons (deep fried balls)
Followed by smoked Haddock with haggis & cheesy bechamel.
    And a well deserved bottle
    of wine
    Sadly terrible beds.
Morning if various KT tape strappings going on.
It did try to snow this morning but currently just breezy & moist.

  • Snow joke

    March 27, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

As we left our hotel we faced an immediate sign for a West Highland Way diversion....so we started off on the Rob Roy route and then diversion continued until we were on the road to Balmaha 🤬
It did snow on us while we were in the forest but nothing too dramatic.
Part of me (heart & brain) is gutted than we couldn't do ⅘ of the route including Conic Hill but the lower part of me (hips, knees & Achilles) is deeply relieved 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • Hail doesn't stop play....

    March 28, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Day 3 - great breakfast - loving the haggis! This was the easiest day in theory but the hailstorm made it less than fun. Essentially walking along the edge of Loch Lomond. Taping & drugs are helping to keep the Achilles pain at an almost tolerable level. Hadn't anticipated the pain in my hips!Read more

  • Breakfast with a view

    March 29, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Beer, wine, sleeping tablets & heat packs on my hips meant I slept very well but apparently on my back (due to sore hips I suspect) so Brett had to put up with me snoring badly 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • Sunny day!

    March 29, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

So today was much nicer for walking - the sun was out a lot of the time & Loch Lomond was shimmering. There were some interesting streams to cross and the day was mostly undulating to the Inversnaid Hotel where we had a well deserved pint waiting for our lift up to the bunkhouse. And bunkhouse does not do it justice!Read more

  • Inversnaid Bunkhouse

    March 29, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

The bunkhouse - it's an ex chapel built by Irish workers who were working on the dam nearby. The food is glorious - onion, cider & thyme soup followed by venison stew with dumplings and spuds - I'm now stuffed. Not to mention the awesome selection of beers to be had ...Read more

  • Mountaineering day

    March 30, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

So today was supposed to be 20 miles....I decided last night that I would definitely do 10 & possibly 15 but not the full day. Brett decided to get up super early to try to do the whole thing in daylight. However due to weather forecast he didn't actually leave till 7.30am. I left after breakfast knowing I won't be going as far.
The first section (about ½ the walk) was not really walking, more like mountaineering...rocks to be scrambled over and streams to be crossed. Thankfully the forecast of fog never materialised. After that a fellow walker, Charlotte, caught up with me and we did the rest together to Beinglas Campsite. I was just too late for the bus so we sat in the sun at The Stagger Inn and I had a couple very nice pints of Caledonian best while she ate her super noodles. We parted ways as I headed off to find the bus and she to walk the next 6 miles. I also discovered that Brett had only got this far before calling quits & getting bus to hotel in Tyndrum!

  • Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy

    March 31, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Very pleasant easy sunny stroll today between Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy. We're staying in a bunkhouse which is converted from the waiting room on the station platform! Apparently featured in Trainspotting (?) Met Otto from Arizona. Brett taught us both how to put duvet cover on using the inside out method 🤣
Then stroll to the hotel for several beers (Charlotte briefly joined us) followed by a top notch dinner. And no Brett wasn't proposing - merely trying to take a nice photo of me while ripping the crotch of his trousers 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

  • Upwards to Glen Coe

    April 1, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

I nearly died a couple of times in the night trying to get out of my top bunk in the Bridge of Orchy bunkhouse
We are off about 9.20 and made it to Inveronan Hotel in just over an hour.
Then it was mostly uphill all the way on Parliamentary road (gentler incline and more cobbled than the military road)
    Some spectacular scenery & views.
    Buggered by the end
Jacket potato with haggis & beans!!!! Genius 😎

After a lovely hot shower. Last night as the cafe closed we retired to our little pod - toasty & comfy!

  • Devil's Staircase

    April 2, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

We set off today with some trepidation about what was ahead.
First glimpse of wild deer begging for carrots in the Kingshouse carpark!
First half of walk was pretty gentle & easy.
Then came the ups and more ups and even more ups, culminating in a 20% gradientRead more

  • Devil's staircase done!

    April 3, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

So the Devil's staircase was not as horrendous as it sounds. Not too bad underfoot. In fact the last few miles going downhill on a 20% gradient was far harder. Our second glamping pod was rather too bijoux for us to & despite having a TV had no hooks at all (so I hung my coat on the TV)
And finally some wildlife. 2 deer in the Kingshouse hotel car park. And then later in Kinlochleven before a delicious dinner of muscles and black pudding stuffed chicken. Not convinced about the Bellhaven Black - not really a stout. Wildcat was lovely though but forgot to take a picture 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • Final 15

    April 3, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

We decided to have breakfast at the hotel rather than microwave and instant porridge from the vending machine. Good call.
At the start it was a 20% gradient straight up for an hour and I nearly quit. But kept going to the end. It tried briefly to snow and the wind was bitterly cold.
The end incidentally was a horrible walk in rain along a main road for about an hour to reach the statue of some bloke 🤷🏼‍♀️ which marks the official end. It's been moved and I reckon that's to make you walk through the shopping area 🤣
    Finally a pint....

  • Going home

    April 5, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 2 °C

I really enjoyed the sauna/pool at my hotel on my last night. Finally a queen sized bed and room to myself! Snoozed and finally went down to bar for a glass of wine. Up at 5.15 and at the airport, through security & I'm going home 🏡Read more
